I took my first yr classes at SMC, and honestly I would recommend anyone to take them at SMC if they can. ELAC professors seem a bit slow....although for some classes the SMC professor commute to ELAC. RT 1 requires no books. RT 30 "Respiratory Care Anatomy and Physiology"(you will use the same book for RT 60), RT 29 "Perinatal and Pediatric Respiratory Care"/ "Neonatal Resuscitation Textbook"

That was my 1st semester....not hard at all

Haha no not at all. If you have a decent background in the sciences it should be a piece of cake. Welch was the only instructor that was a tad hard but he retired. Tsang is like "Welch lite", and Jackson is extremely easy. Rees for RT 29 is a lot more time consuming, but nothing too hard. All of the above professors give you study guides/objectives, so you know what to expect on the exams. Plus, there's extra credit built into exams.

RT 2 sucks because it is at 6:30 am and the professor doesn't know how to to teach or give you any direction into what will be on the exam.

Thanks so much for the information Pinky! You've been very helpful. Sorry to hear about that missing pre-requisite class. Which class did you need to take?

Microbiology. I took it years ago, so it isn't valid anymore and I was unable to get into a class last year. I'm taking it in Fall. I'm actually enjoying my time off, this last semester left me a lil burnt out, never got used to waking up at 6:30 am...and then going to work and coming home at 7pm. Vacation here I come lol. Good luck with the program.

whatever math is algebra/intermediate algebra...
if you have questions just email the rt dept at ELAC. The secretary is really good at returning email promptly.

I'm just about finished... with the first week of the ELAC/SMC Respiratory Therapy program.

So far, so good. Although there has been some faculty additions and retirements, the professors seem very solid, very experienced. They seem to know what they're doing and are well organized... with a small exception of times/dates and classroom changes. Their expectations were clearly expressed (which is important to me). The classes seem challenging but manageable. 2nd years seem willing to offer advice and teachers are willing to set up study groups. You really get the feeling that they are trying to set you up to succeed.

I'm currently taking RT21, RT29, and RT6 with RT2, RT30 and RT7 to follow next semester. Meeting with the college counselors and the RT program counselors really helped too. I have an educational plan so I know where I'm at and what is to come at all times.

I did my research before applying to ELAC/SMC. I looked into the programs and Valley, Mt.Sac and Concord. As of right now, I am glad I chose ELAC/SMC... and I'm glad I got in. Waitlist is currently 1 year... they only take/graduate one class per year.

I'll be back to update in a couple of months or so. I will try to be objective, reasonable and helpful to anyone reading this, that is trying to decide if this is the program for them.

The instructors at ELAC are ok. So far I've met four instructors. There are two instructors that aren't so good. There's a lot of materials to learn so be prepare to spend all your spare time studying. It's not bad just time consuming especially when the instructors doesn't really teach. You basically just have to read the books on your own and take the exams. Makes me wonder what are they getting paid for? Just make sure you read the materials before you come to class because one of the instructor likes to pick on the students. Good Luck.

Yes, that's correct. As a student in the program, I think they do this so you will keep up with your reading. It's kind of like an independent study. You ask questions during class, and then they will do some explanations.
I wish they would at least give you a general outline in some classes what will be covered on the exams, practical information that is.

Hi Rt, I did not get this email yet. I applied in June (for Fall 2012), and received a letter in August stating that my application was complete. That's about it. I didn't hear about that email.

Thanks Dass Boot for replying. When I turned in my application, the person who went over my application told me I should be recieving an email in Sep/oct to make sure I was still interested in the program and that it was mandatory to respond to the email. I was also told another email would be sent in Janurary if there were any changes on transcripts that I wanted to report. (even though my application was complete, not sure what I would report, maybe gps change)

It was at the Elac campus. I didn't catch the person's name, but I know it wasn't any of the instructors. It might have been their secretary.

I have a question, if when I applied for the program the math req. was 115, but three months after my application was turned in they changed it to math 125, does my application now become incomplete? Just asking to see what you guys think. I will be sending an email to the rt office to check what they say.

I got the email I was talking about today. It was the notice of interest that needs to be responded to avoid getting dropped from the 2012 cohort class list.

I'm just about finished... with my 3rd week in the 2nd semester of the ELAC/SMC Respiratory Therapy program. What can I say. So far, so good.

About the program: It's a solid program. The classes are challenging but the academic plan is well layed out and goals/expectation are made clear from the beginning. The professors are experienced in the classroom and in the field. Remember, 1st year is all class/book work. 2nd year is clinical rotation and more classes.

About the classes: They are hard. They aren't overly hard but they are not easy. RT1 and RT21 were less challenging intro classes. Everything else is a swift kick in the pants. RT2 did not have a good pass rate... enough said about that. There is a lot of information that is given at a fast pace but it isn't anything that can't be managed with time and effort. The professors are all solid, I like most of them. Every professor has their own teaching style. As a student, you will have to adjust your time, effort, habits accordingly. Reading every word of every page of every chapter is a must. I also listen to recorded lectures. All the professors make themselves available to answer questions outside of class.

Character Limits, will use 2 post.

Continued from above.

My thoughts: I started last fall with a large cohort. It is now a lot smaller. Expectations are clear: do not fail any class, do not drop any class, do not get D's. It's the same in any nursing program. I suggest anyone reading this to do their research and make sure that this program at this school is the right program for them. Don't take up a seat someone else will want/need. Don't bother coming here half-assed thinking it's easy. You'll just be wasting everyones time. Otherwise, I have enjoyed myself very much. The information taught is very interesting. Concepts, mechanics, theory, application... they are all fun to learn. A lot of what I've learned last semester is building up and coming together now, it's a great feeling. I hear the 2nd years getting to apply everything they've learned in the classroom at the hospitals and I'm jelous. The stories the 2nd years and the teachers tell are exciting. It motivates me knowing I can earn a place within that circle... can't wait to move on.

Important: Some people post here making it sound easy. They act like it's a walk in the park. Just show up, do some reading, get spoon fed. It's just not true. Nothing in life worth having is easy. Others post here to discourage you from the program thinking they'll have less competition. They are weak. Don't let them get to you. Be strong. Good luck. Till next semesters post.

i'm trying to apply for the elac rt program currently. i'm slightly confused with the applicants earlier. so if i were to apply this year, i would have to wait until 2013? is that how the waiting list works or am i reading this all wrong?

also, for previous students who took rt15, since it can only be taken in the summer, how were the hours distributed at the clinic normally? i know we have an advisor for this, but i'd like to hear of some examples. were there any time for part time work during the weekdays? i might be getting ahead of myself, but i wanted to prepare myself and work out the time.

I applied Spring of last year (February 2011). I'm on the cohort list for Fall 2012. It will be determined in April if I will actually be in the program.

Just so you can see some sort of timeline.

"los angeles therapist", "los angeles psychiatrist", "ADD doctor", "ADHDdoctor", "depression doctor", "best psychiatrist los angeles", "best depression doctor
Los Angeles".

Sometimes community centers will have shrinks you can talk to. I think they charge
on sliding scale. The only problem is they are shrinks-in-training so they eventually leave. Some people don't have a problem with that though.

I will be graduating with a BSc in biological Science in May 2013. Assuming that I apply for ELAC RT program immediately after my graduation, I take it that the earliest I can matriculate is Fall 2015?

Thanks.
