Okay let's cut some slack for those who do not pass their exams on the first try. The forum is designed to assist each other by giving positive feedback and assistance regarding study tips. There is no reason to be unprofessional. If there is no assistance one can give to each other that is positive, do not post rude and degrading remarks. It is unnecessary and unprofessional. We are here only to help each other in a positive and professional manner. |

mattew in Garland, Texas said: Hello guys Is that your scaled score? Because passing scale is 75 or 86 correct answers. Either way relax and DO NOT STOP STUDYING. Break each section of Kettering down. Know Patient evaluation like the back of your hand. In the back of Kettering there are 3 study schedules. Pick one, use the practice questions from the NBRC webste, and pull out your Egan's book as well. I also used the JB Review book by Scanlan, Heuer, and Sinopoli to study. Know your values as well. Use rtexam.com for more questions. Do not get discouraged the knowledge is in your brain. Do the workbook. Also on the Kettering site there is a section under online practice for assessment (free- 45 questions) it will show you your weak areas after you complete. Focus on the yellow and red zones on the assessment analysis. Buy tokens if you have to. Also tutorialsystems.com has free practice questions for both the CRT, RRT and simulations. Good luck take the exam when you feel absolutely comfortable, do not rush. Tell yourself everyday until exam day that you are going to pass the CRT! If you are not working currently, studying for the CRT is now your 8 to 5 job everyday, including weekends until exam day. Buy lots of paper and start writing. You can PASS! |

I was out of the field since 2000 which was just before state licensure in IL. I decided to try to get a state license this summer for the heck of it. The state told me they would give me a license if I would take the test again. The last time I took the CRTT was in 1985. I did not want to pay hundreds of dollars to review so I decided I would give TutorialSystems a try. I studied a week and a half, pretty much 5 or 6 hours a day. I went thru all their chapters they had and took notes then I studied my notes. So really, I wasn't studying the whole week and a half; prolly 3 days of it I spent just taking the notes. I took the test and passed it the first time. It was not easy, but not too difficult either. So if you know how to take notes and study than I think saving all that money with Tutorial Systems is worth a try. |

Lyndsey Jones and Kettering are only refresher courses, they will not teach you Respiratory. What you can do is look at your weak sections on your score report and study those items indebt. It will not help you in the field if you dont know these things, the things you are being tested on are the things you will be trusted to know. Dont scan over items, study them and commit them to memory. |

OK,
And at the ones who think you should hang it up after the first attempt... Well I know there are several RNS, PARAMEDICS, HAND SURGEONS, ETC. THAT DID NOT PASS THE FIRST TIME AND THEY ARE SOME OF THE BEST AROUND.... SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT TEST TAKERS AND ARE BETTER HANDS ON.... JUST BECAUSE YOU MAY HAVE PASSED THE FIRST TIME.... WELL TOOTLES TO YOU DONT MAKE YOU A GREAT THERAPIST... SO EITHER SAY SOMETHING INTELLEGENT OR KEEP RUDE IMMATURE REMARKS TO YOURSELF |

i have not taken my test at all. i was so discouraged schooling it made me feel that though i feel this is my calling i was truly in the wrong state for it! without gettin into details of that garbage i do want to thank glenn from tampa for the very positive statements made to all. though you may never know who i am you spoke to who i should be. i take these coments about this incredible field very seriously. i have read some very ugly things that were for the most part uncalled for and down right mean. i agree that all choosing this field must realize you are goin to be on the front lines of life saving decisions and should approach this with that state of mind. if you have failed the test several times. maybe you should try a study group or approach it from a rested different angle. but please dont give up. if this is your job in life, go get it. im studying my ketterings now! thanks glenn in tampa! |

I'd like to offer you an alternative to the other review programs you mentioned you have used. I have a 12 CD Home Study Exam Review that reviews in detail 180 NBRC-like questions. It is just like the on-site exam review workshops I conduct around the country. Rather than trying to memorize information, these CDs provide detailed explanations for each question, explaining why the answer is correct or incorrect. Math short cuts and test-taking skills are offered as well. The program comes with my published textbook, Respiratory Care Exam Review. For more information, go to my website at www.respiratoryreviewworkshops.com. I know how frustrating this situation is, so I'm hopeful if you try my materials it will be helpful in your exam preparation. |

Just took my CRT and passed! Best review book that we all used was Sills Respiratory Therapist Exam Review 5th edition. Our school has had a 100% pass rate off of this book and we only paid special attention to the Hints review. It does a great job of sectioning out the CRT, WRT, and Sims portion. Seriously we all just did the "hints" on the Entry Level exams and we all passed and so have our cohorts previous. Hopefully this helps and good luck! |

programs, but if you can afford it you should buy the Sills for the written part, kettering Sims book and lindsey cd's with the clin sims practice test with explanations and you will do great. My school also have a 100% pass rate and I was not the strongest student but it sure felt good passing all three exams the first time. Also Lindsey has cd's for the written test in which I listened to in my car everyday I was in it, that also helped because it explains everything to you in detail, but I feel that the kettering workbook and study guide was not for me because it forces you to memorize things and I did not buy any tokens. I was lucky because my school paid for Kettering and I bought the rest and yes this was a community college. |

Seriously we all just did the "hints" on the Entry Level exams and we all passed and so have our cohorts previous. Hopefully this helps and good luck! Now just took the RRT both WRE and ClinSims! I scored fantastically. LISTEN that is so unlike me I hate testing and have huge anxiety about these things. I just wanted to deliver my experience for the RRT examinations as to help provide assistance to others. I studied out of the Sills RT book and did the practice exams in the back for each chapter and got geared up for the parts I didnt know. In the first part of the sills book the author lists the chapters that are weighted more than others which was very true and gave me confidence. I think being pointed out as to which chapters to focus on helped me to spend my time studying wisely. The last thing is to focus ont he "Hints" they are magic I swear it (especially for CRT). FOR THE CLIN SIMS? Theres really not much in the Sills book about that BUT does list some keys factors when approaching the scenarios which helped me SO much. I did Kettering $75 work books and those were great because they actually tell you the reason why the choice was picked just incase you missed it. ONE IMPORTANT THING FOR ANYONE TAKING IT THIS SEMESTER 2012!!!! The RRT has a large amount of ventilatory care questions and I know that the biggest confusion is with the mls/kg for the tidal volumes. ITS 8!! Or its around 8. Not 10 and not 6-8 like some books say. KNOW YOUR IDEAL BODY WEIGHTS too because they try to stump you with giving your portly men or really tall skinny woman! Ive ran out of space. Just ask me if you want to kno |

PaulyRod, did you utilize Kettering at all or just did you just use Sills? I have an older book for Sills but not the new one...wondering if the older one will suffice? And can I assume you are saying you had to use the IBW formula to calculate for Tidal Volumes? and they were mostly based around 8? And my understanding is that most vent questions on the Clin Sims start at SIMV, (even if the Dr disagrees), then Assist/Control and then Control...in that order? Which examine did you find the hardest, CRT, RRT?

Hello Matthew, I live pretty close to you and I am studying for my CRT then RRT as well. I have come to realize that in order to work inside DFW I am going to have to pass my RRT. Over a decade ago it took me four times before I passed and I know that it can be so very difficult to keep the faith that you will pass but I KNOW YOU WILL PASS. You have to believe it. What hurt me was that I had worked for many years in the field so I was answering the questions as if it were real life and once I realized that NBRC has their own way of doing things, only then was I able to pass. If you would like to form a study group or ....I am open for suggestions...I know that we can PASS!!!!! I wish you the best of luck. |

I am getting ready to take the clinsims for the first time. Are there any topics/diseases I should review before I take it? |

jeff in Saint Marys, West Virginia 4 hours ago |
ashbob in Lawrence, Kansas said: I am getting ready to take the clinsims for the first time. Are there any topics/diseases I should review before I take it? Yes. There will be 11 sims, 10 count and 1 is a "testing sim" but you won't know which one. You can count on seeing 2 neonates(1 will likely be a heart defect), ARDS, trauma/post-surgery, pneumothorax (though this may be part of another sim), asthma, neurological (GB/MG), croup/epiglottitis, CHF, and COPD of some sort. You're sure to see those situations at some point, but they may be combined into a single sim such as a CHF pt might develop ARDS and later blow a pneumo. Obviously, know critical values, vent settings and weaning for all situations. Always fix ventilation first! Know how to calc a shunt, deadspace and O2 content/delivery and know your hemodynamics.
You may get TB and AIDS(they like to combine those with drug overdose so pick ELISA and acid-fast sputum culture and pentamadine for the PJP/PCP that comes with AIDS ), near drowning, CO, CF, but not likely more than 1 of those so study smartly. I passed my tests the 1st time an I'm a tutor for our program. My tutees have passed. Send me an email if anyone needs help or tips. I'll be glad to help if I can. |

Hi Jeff, I live in Louisiana and I have been trying to find someone to tutor me for the CRT but have been unsuccessful. Since, you are a tutor do you know of anyone in Louisiana that tutors for the CRT and RRT? II have taken the test twice and have not passed. It seems I go blank during test taking. I would greatly appreciate any help. Please email me @ pearlmcgee@bellsouth.net.
