Most important skills to be successful as a Basis administrator are as follow:
1. Operating system (UNIX or Windows)
2. Databases (Oracle, SQL Server, MaxDB etc)
3. SAP

Beside these technical skills a person should have an aptitude for troubleshooting, and a passion for learning new technology.
