How did you get your start doing school bus driver work, and what career moves did you make to get to your current position?

Do you need a particular educational background?

Call the school bus companies in your area or where ever your willing to work and ask them if they having any classes starting? Most of the ones in my area are willing to train you and get you your license at no cost to you if you will work for them.
That's how I got into driving school buses.

Look up in your phone book school bus companies, than get on the phone and call them. Ask if they've got any classes starting? Most of the ones in my area will train you and help you get your school bus lic and etc. Some even pay for your license and physical. It's unusal that someone with a Class A wants to get the school bus license, usually its the ones that come in get their school bus license and then go drive a truck. You might want to pickup your learner's permit for school bus that would put you ahead of the game.

I have been driving a school bus for over seven years and have been a CDL lincensed driver since the 1980s. I took one year off and my yellow certificate expired. I need 10 hours training to renew it. I have already passed my safety exam (the new one) two years ago. Are there any instructors for hire that are willing to make $200 for one Saturday so I can put in my hours and have it renewed. Bus companies are already done with training and want you fully certified. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

What state are you in Barb? Here in Massachusetts you need 8 hours class room safety hours a year to maintain your yellow bus certificate. I'm really surprised that there isn't a company willing to hire you if that's all you need. Most companies might require you to take a ride [you drive] with one of their safety officers.
There is no set time for classes. If they get a couple of people willing to take the class they'll come up with one. It's not a one time per year thing.

Hey, I'm interested in a school bus driving career. Im a stay at home mom that drives back and forth to school for pre-k anyway and I'm curious about the hours. I have a child thats going into kindergarten next school year and a 8 month old. Would I just be working during the times the school bus runs it's route? Or is there more to it?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and tomorrow I'm taking the written exam for Berkeley Unified School District School Bus Driver. Any tips/advice on what to expect? Also, I currently have a Class A CDL but no passenger endorsement or CHP school bus driver certificate. Do I need those now or do I get those if and after I get hired?
