Be able to sew a straight line; know how to control your fabrics as you sew; learn how and when to press well.

A seamstress needs to know her mach. now the fabrics your working with, and must be able to read a pattern.
I find that my expertise is to iron my seam as I sew, it makes a real successful looking garment.

It depends partly on what type of sewing you are doing. Basically, you must know how to pin fit, chalk mark clothing according to universal marking codes. You must know all the techniques, tricks to altering clothing
The one most important thing is skill in talking to and handling people
Some can be most annoying, and unreasonable and you must know how to talk to/listen to them. We have all heard of the "bridezilla" ? yes, the "zillas" are not all brides. lol
I think it's most important to Not take short cuts when you get really busy. That's not the time to start slacking and taking chances by pinning etc half way.

I also believe the number one important skill is KNOWING WHEN TO SAY NO.
There will be times that a customer will want something done and as a seamstress we know it will not work. They may insist, some almost "bully" But an experienced seamstress KNOWS when something just won't work and you must know how to say no and mean no.
