What is the best training for becoming a seamstress? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective seamstress?

What do non-traditional career paths look like?

there is no rela training to become a seamstress. you can go to school for design, but they are not going to teach you how to sew. you might get lucky in finding someone through a local fabric store offering classes but that dosen,t entitle someone to be a seamstress.ongoing training is learn through experience.there is no certification necessary to become a seamstress, even 25 years of working in a specialty, such as tailoring or the bridal industry is still not always good enough to get you a job.

Those comments are absolutely true about design schools. I applied to an online one. It was very detailed oriented and very hard. Sewing is an oftentime tedious task and I would not attempt it unless, first a burning desire is there. Stay positive. You can learn if you really want to do it. yes sewing is all about experirence. Is not about how many degrees people have in designing. for sewing, call me at <Edited by Host: contact info removed>. I learned to sew by myself. It is the most hardest thing to learn to do.
All the best in your sewing.

You need to learn first is how to control your sewing machine.
Its like driving a car. I have taught sewing techs on sewing machines without any tread on the machine. Learn to control it with your foot on the pedal so it does not run away from you.

I agree with all the replies above....I took sewing for 1/2 semester (cooking class the other half) back in the early 70's when Home Economics classes were required to finish high school. It was a start but it is the years of experience and self-training that got me to where I am now: sewing for the public.
Do not get discouraged and read, try, ask.
Welcome to the creative art of sewing.

PS....there are a lot of books out there, even in your own libraries in town, that are excellent references. I own so many books and one is even on doing your own patterns to fit your body and it actually made sense. AMAZING! Check out books and practice, practice, practice.....which is not what i Have had time to do. Now i do have time since the kids are grown and gone and I finally had surgery to fix a long-time back injury.

I would love to be a seamstress and in a place like blackburn there is no training for such a thing its ridiculous there are plenty of people saying they want to open their own shops as designers but none have the ability to get there! I have 5 years experience and thats nothing compared to what actual seamstresses have, yes it is all about the experience and nobody is willing to train people how to sew i have a natural nack to sewing always have and there are sewing classes you can take but the best thing is to just keep practising and maybe make your own website and show pictures of what you have done and step to step of how you can do it or books maybe if your quite textile aswell you could make some pretty good scrap books with examples of things you can make to show what experience you have this can start getting you going i am still very young but i am trying my best to get there! hope this helps GOOD LUCK :D

How do I get my qualifications out and about to people? I have done many projects, I am very proud of my work. I would like the title seamstress, how do I get it? I need the pay that they make also. I dont want to waste the money to go to school if its not going to help. What do I do now?

Well it depends what qualifications you have i have a diploma in fashion and textiles and most of my work was textiles based and this is not what i want to do i want the title of a seamstress too. If you have more or less done everything such as evry kind of tailering just say your a seamstress get an interview with some1 and show them your work i dnt think you get the title from anywhere(not 100% sure) but i think if youve been doing tailering/seamstressing work then just say your a seamstress and try and get an interview somewhere and then just show what work you have dont i think with this job title its all about experience and if you do get an interview just show what great experience you have! hope this is a better answer but theres not many seamstresses here to answer your question so il try my best! HAHA

hmm this is all making me a bit nervous I'm 32 and just embarking on the Seamstress Journy. was looking to find a course but it seems that that's not the best idea. I have no experience is it now to late for me to make a carear out of this. I can already design and have made a few things but I really want to work somewhere I can be trained aswell

To become a good seamstress, you need the experience. Trial by error unfortunately cost time and money, but you will become the best. Knowing how to sew, terms, tools, etc are a need to know. Sometimes I try something new on scrap fabric and several times until I master the pattern/design/project.
