@cute 848??? Wow....I really feel for the July 2011 exam folks. It's going to take F-O-R-E-V-E-R to get through this April 2011 exam!!! As of yesterday they are only up to #30+.......hang tight folks!

Well, I worked only for couple of months. the hours are insane. If you have little children, get ready. You need a babysitter who is willing to care for your child till 10pm or later if you are a single mom. I have no children, but I have seen girls cry because they couldn't pick up their kids, and supervisors that do not care at all.
The only way to move up is to have a masters degree. If you don't there is no chance to get a SUP position and being that the hours are crazy, there is no time to study. I have come home at 1am, at 2 am, at 11pm, and very few times at 7pm. If you have no family and are extremely tolerant of the egoistic supervisors, than this is the job for you. I resigned because:
1. I am enrolled for my masters now.
2. I couldn't deal with the behavior of certain people(I said some not all).
3. The money you'll get it seems a lot now. When you get to work you'll see its not even worth it and for what they expect us to do its nothing.
4. I love the mission of the agency, I wanted to make a difference. I did with the cases I worked. However, I had to leave.

Best of luck to all of you.
P.S. All CPS workers that are now with agency are at least with 2-3 years experience. Rarely you will find someone that has been there for 20 years. You can draw your own conclusions. Also, the masters degree they supposedly offer? NO NO. Budget cuts. You'll never get it. Sorry for speaking the truth. Like I said, things need to change within ACS. Hopefully commissioner Richter will do something

You get paid overtime only when you are doing home visits past 5pm. If you have to stay in the office and do paperwork you get time off. Thats how it used to be. I do not know if things have changed. I hope. Sometimes supervisors decide whether to get overtime or time off. You work 35 hours a week usually. However, time and a half starts after 40 hours. oh and you get taxed like crazy.

@anonymous So on those 11pm, 1am, 2am evenings you were paid time and half? How did you receive time off? A full day/half day off? Thanks for all the information by the way....you are a G-E-M!!!

Would anyone who was processed this past Friday confirm for me that the drug screen is a urine test and not a hair follicle test?

I had three puffs of marijuana on Christmas Eve. I am not a regular smoker by any means, but am kind of worried.

Can anyone tell me whether NYC CPS employees use mass transit for home visits, or do they need their own vehicle? Seems to me that traffic and parking in the city would be horrific! Also, how much of a "transit discount" does ACS offer? Thanks!

@ Christina and who ever else responded to my 848.. The fact that I wasn't in the army..navy..etc..n dont speak a second language is what basically have me so low. But its okay...will remain at current job until then. I have my masters in education and working on certification. So im not just sitting around pondering about the number given on list.

Hey there Cute...my response pertained to the size of the list -- I had no idea it would be that long!!! I thought there would be an April list of 300 people or so. Unfortunately, since I took the test in July, I have to wait until the April list is exhausted before they generate one for July.

But good luck on your certification! I have a masters in criminal justice -- I took the civil service exam for probation officer and law department investigator, but they're both about a 4-year waiting list...so my current job will do for now. I just hope they keep the interview ball rolling and get through this list as fast as possible!!!

@cute They have exhausted the Sept 10' exam....they just finished it up with the last 30-40 candidates with the January 13th interview pool. That list seems to have been 300+....they have just started with the April 11' exam. The first 40 or so folks interviewed on January 13th as well.

Hello,

I have been following this thread for a few months biw and I'm starting to get a bit worried.

I took the exam in Sept'11, but I didn't score that great. My score was 90%, and although that might be enough for an interview, I still have not declared for graduation yet.

Will it be impossible to get hired if I'm stilling taking a class at the time of my interview?

@Confused When do you graduate? You have a long wait ahead you. The hiring process is currently happening with the very beginning of the April 11' exam....it has over 900 candidates on it. They all have to be called in to interview before the process can move to the July 11' exam....everyone on that list must be called before September 11' exam can commence. Basically you have two entire exams in front of you....you probably have more than enough time to complete the credits you need to qualify for employment.

@cute Well the Sept 2010 exam list had over 300+ candidates....the last 40 candidates were just called into interview on January 13th. So it took just under 1.5 years to get through those 300+ candidates. So...if hiring continues at the same pace as the Sept 2010 exam list it should take 4-5 years( 1.5 years per 300+ candidates).

If it moves faster than the time should be sooner.

@cute I really don't want to be the bearer of bad news or an alarmist....I just want to be as helpful as I can!

I can't be sure it's going to take 4-5 years but based on the pace of the Sept 2010 exam(which is the only barometer we have to use) it looks like it could take that long. I really hope it doesn't take that long....so many people want/need to work!!!

The length of this April 11' exam list is proof of how many folks need work...incredible times!

MS. A in Brooklyn I'm so confused. How are you calculating these call dates? What do you mean there is a 4-5 year waiting list? Most of these people seem to have been waiting for about 9 months at the max.I took the CPS exam at the beginning of this month. I figured I would be called for an interview in October, no later than next year January. If anything I thought people where only kept on the list for a year and would have to test again if they weren't called.

@snowball25...I'm kind of taken a back when you stated that if some of the people aren't called that they will have to take the test all over again?.. That doesn't sound right especially if you are given a list number. List number would mean an opportunity for an interview no?... I dont think it would be ethical to skip people who are waiting especially if have a number and to be told that they must take that test again...smh...

@Cute in NY I agree it would be unethical, and it doesn't make sense, but I was told that test scores are only kept on file for a year.

you have to bring at least a student copy of your transcript. If you get the job they ask you to come back with offical transcripts and diploma.

So apparently there were 60 vacancies to be filled .....they filled all 60 spots during the Jan 13 sessions. According to the staff interviews today are to fill 10 standby positions incase anyone of the 60 folks drop out for some reason. The staff even invited folks to leave before processing commenced because the positions offered today aren't definite. Quite disappointing to say the least!!! However I am going through with the interview anyway. Let's see what happens.....

Alright guys....so I made it into the group of 10 standbys.

As I said earlier all 60 spots were filled during the 1/13 interview pool. Todays interviews were conducted for the sole purpose of creating a standby list of 10 in order to fill any spots that open up before the 2/13 training session begins. The 10 standby folks did not make it upstairs to be drug tested/paperwork as others did on 1/13....we were told our number on the list of 10 and told "we will be in touch". So....the waiting continues!!!

Ms. A, they did say that even if no one from the Feb. academy dropped out, you would not have to interview again and would be automatically placed in the April academy, right?

I didn't even get interviewed. They got the 10th person before my group was called in. I hope this means that I'll be one of the first ones to be interviewed in March, but they didn't really give a fully definitive answer on that.

The video, and the talk from the managers and the two union dudes made me more certain that this is the job I want to do. I really hope I make it in in the next few months.

That really sucks @pya. According to what the managers said everyone today will have priority in the next hiring pool. And yes the 10 standby folks will not have to interview if we have to wait for the April academy.

Only time will tell what happens...best of luck going forward!
