May 2011 I think, it was so long ago I barely remember. Do you know anyone working there now ?

@Victor...It definitely wasn't May, the exam wasn't give in May. It was probably April 2011.

I do know people who work for the agency. As far as turnover...it's pretty bad. Apparently within a year many of the new hires leave. Caseloads are heavy(12+ cases), exorbitant amounts of paperwork for each case, dangerous work environments, overworked and underpaid. Top salary is under $50,000. Also last March 2011 a NYC "Child Protective Specialist" Chereece Bell and his supervisor Damon Adams were indicted and charged in the murder of an abused child in Brooklyn, NY. Everyone with a vested interest in child welfare is awaiting the trial and outcome, many are concerned that if they are found guilty it will open the door to holding CPS workers criminally responsible for circumstances beyond their control.

Many CPS workers have quit because of this.....the idea of being incarcerated for a crime you were not directly involved with would deter many from keeping/taking this position. That is a hard pill to swallow.

It is far from an ideal situation....

Ms. A - you said you're number 45 of the April 2011 exam. What score did you get, if you don't mind me asking? I'm trying to estimate what my rank will be. I received a 91.25 on the July 2011 exam. Thanks in advance!

Ms. A in New York, New York said: @3030 I don't think so....from what I have been able to gather from the responses on this forum, folks are being called by test date/ test ranking. An exam was held during Sept. 2010....they are still hiring from the end of that list(#300+). Someone on this forum is # 300+ and is interviewing tomorrow. The exam wasn't given again until April 2011...both numbers 9 & 10 are also interviewing tomorrow. So it seems they are done with the Sept 2010 and they are moving on to the beginning of the April 2011 exam....no one else has responded with their April 2011 exam ranking and interview date so I'm just putting the pieces together with the info I have. I'm #45/April 2011 exam. I think I should be in the next interview group but who knows....what exam date/number are you?

Ms A: You said you're #45/April 2011 exam. What was your score? I'm trying to estimate what my rank will be. I scored 91.25/July 2011. Thanks in advance!

@Christina....94.5. But it will be really difficult to tell what your rank will be....totally depends on what the top scores is your group are.
For instance you could have a large amount of high achievers in your test group...first 120 folks all scored 92 and above, you would fall below that. Or you could have only 25 folks who scored 92 and above, you fall below that.

So its really hard to estimate.

@Ms A. Brooklyn... Regarding that case Chereece Bell and Adams, the issue was that they had lied about visiting the child's house and falsified documentation to make it appear as if they where on top of the case. Yes I agree there is a lot of work visits, documentation to be done, but the fault is when agency members begin to lie and pretend to have done work that they haven't. If that CPS worker did not lie and say he been to that house than perhaps the visit could have been assigned to someone else etc. That was pure neglect.

Hello all! All I can say is the it was a hell of a day! Got there at 8 left at 2pm. The interview was a good 45min. All senario questions about behaviors and actions!. the first thing they do is checking all the documents. After that they call one by one to be interviewed with two managers both asking one question at a time. And then u wait and wait and wait till u feel like u can't breath anymore. Eventually they call u! If hired they send up stairs! If not u leave! In my case I was hired yay!!!:) went up and more waiting! Finally got to do my drug test. The academy training is starting feb 13 for 8 weeks! Best of luck to alll and Ms. A best of luck to u!

@Mimi Congrats!!! So happy for you! How many people would you estimate were there today? Crowded? Did you to find out other folks ranks/numbers on the April 2011 list? I am so antsy...I feel like I am so close but so far from being called in. This waiting game is killing me....so any info is appreciated. Again congrats....

mr.c in Yonkers, New York said: Hello All,

I took the exam in April '11 and got a 95. January 5th I got the results and I was list number 10 and I will be dodging work to interview on January 13th. Here are some pointers I have been able to gather.

The Exam: There is no real way to study for it. Its all logic, reading comprehension, and gramar. There is no math, and it is computerized. The exam seems to teach you a lot about the agencies practices and procedures as well.

The Interview: I know some CPS workers and they tell me the interview is basically a lot of scenario based questions. I was told you interview with two managers. You are told on the spot if they want you, and if they do, you are sent downstairs to take a drug screening.

I wish everyone a lot of luck on Friday! I am thrilled to see so many people who want to make a difference in the city we love.

@Mr.C How did it go today?

The interview process is very long! I was number #10 on my exam's list but they took the last 40 or so names from the Sep' 11 exam. So I had to wait for 8 hours till 12:30 to get my documents looked like to see if I qualified. Then I had to wait another 3 hours to get interviewed. After I got interviewed it was about a 50 minute wait till I found out the results. I was offered a job and I had to decide to take it right then and there. I took it of course :).

The highest number I saw from the April '11 exam was 38. So anyone with a number close to 38 who is qualified will have a more than excellent chance of getting the job in the next hiring pool. and if you will get out of the interview somewhat quick. I didn't get completely done with everything until like 6:00!

The next academy is on the 13th, It is 8 weeks long. So I bet there will be another hiring pool in March at the latest. :)

One piece of advice for those who are low on the list. Get your official sealed transcript now, from your college. It will save you a step after you are offered the job. Those who had just a student copy will have to rush to get an official one before they go for processing.

one final piece of advice. Bring little snacks.

don't stress about the 1 in three 3 rule. I was sitting next to my adjacent numbers and all 4 got hired. :) I think the main things that will mess you up are not being qualified in the education department and totally fudging the interview.

The 1 in 3 rule doesnt mean that. It means: 1 every 3 people will be called for an interview after the list of eligible people is established. No worries people. I resigned 2 months ago. However, I remember the day I was interviewed. We were about 50 people and almost 40 were chosen. Its usually better if you get interviewed on a Monday or Tuesday. (Usually first and second day of the hiring pool). Depending on how openings they have , they will hire at least 60% of the people interviewed. The ranking matters up to a certain point. Good luck to you all. Hopefully things will change within the agency. They are losing people everyday. And if things will not change, the cycle of hiring every 2 months will remain unchanged.

Well, I worked only for couple of months. the hours are insane. If you have little children, get ready. You need a babysitter who is willing to care for your child till 10pm or later if you are a single mom. I have no children, but I have seen girls cry because they couldn't pick up their kids, and supervisors that do not care at all.
The only way to move up is to have a masters degree. If you don't there is no chance to get a SUP position and being that the hours are crazy, there is no time to study. I have come home at 1am, at 2 am, at 11pm, and very few times at 7pm. If you have no family and are extremely tolerant of the egoistic supervisors, than this is the job for you. I resigned because:
1. I am enrolled for my masters now.
2. I couldn't deal with the behavior of certain people(I said some not all).
3. The money you'll get it seems a lot now. When you get to work you'll see its not even worth it and for what they expect us to do its nothing.
4. I love the mission of the agency, I wanted to make a difference. I did with the cases I worked. However, I had to leave.

Best of luck to all of you.
P.S. All CPS workers that are now with agency are at least with 2-3 years experience. Rarely you will find someone that has been there for 20 years. You can draw your own conclusions. Also, the masters degree they supposedly offer? NO NO. Budget cuts. You'll never get it. Sorry for speaking the truth. Like I said, things need to change within ACS. Hopefully commissioner Richter will do something

You get paid overtime only when you are doing home visits past 5pm. If you have to stay in the office and do paperwork you get time off. Thats how it used to be. I do not know if things have changed. I hope. Sometimes supervisors decide whether to get overtime or time off. You work 35 hours a week usually. However, time and a half starts after 40 hours. oh and you get taxed like crazy.

Can anyone tell me whether NYC CPS employees use mass transit for home visits, or do they need their own vehicle? Seems to me that traffic and parking in the city would be horrific! Also, how much of a "transit discount" does ACS offer? Thanks!

Hey there Cute...my response pertained to the size of the list -- I had no idea it would be that long!!! I thought there would be an April list of 300 people or so. Unfortunately, since I took the test in July, I have to wait until the April list is exhausted before they generate one for July.

But good luck on your certification! I have a masters in criminal justice -- I took the civil service exam for probation officer and law department investigator, but they're both about a 4-year waiting list...so my current job will do for now. I just hope they keep the interview ball rolling and get through this list as fast as possible!!!

@cute They have exhausted the Sept 10' exam....they just finished it up with the last 30-40 candidates with the January 13th interview pool. That list seems to have been 300+....they have just started with the April 11' exam. The first 40 or so folks interviewed on January 13th as well.

Hello,

I have been following this thread for a few months biw and I'm starting to get a bit worried.

I took the exam in Sept'11, but I didn't score that great. My score was 90%, and although that might be enough for an interview, I still have not declared for graduation yet.

Will it be impossible to get hired if I'm stilling taking a class at the time of my interview?

@Confused When do you graduate? You have a long wait ahead you. The hiring process is currently happening with the very beginning of the April 11' exam....it has over 900 candidates on it. They all have to be called in to interview before the process can move to the July 11' exam....everyone on that list must be called before September 11' exam can commence. Basically you have two entire exams in front of you....you probably have more than enough time to complete the credits you need to qualify for employment.

@ Ms.A
Thanks for the information!

My class is not finished until the end of April, unfortunately.
