I have a buddy that's been in IT Recruiting in Houston for the last 5yrs and has built a personal resume database of technology talent and we were chatting about the potential of selling his database full populated. Is that illegal being that your selling someone contact info? Also we were thinking it should be worth atleast 150-200k being that it's loaded with SAP, .net developers, DBA's, etc.. and a recruiting firm could recoup those fees within 6 months easily.

I'm not sure of the legality of selling a database like that, but from a recruiters perspective, why would a company be willing to pay 150 - 200k for a database that your friend has compiled? A company can purchase resume database access on a nationwide job board for a couple of thousand dollars per year. Dice.com is a good example, since they are primarily an IT job board filled with SAP, .net developers, and every IT person under the sun. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but I don't think you will get anywhere near that amount for a static database that is never updated, unless there is something I'm missing. |

I have yet to see a passive candidate shove a resume on monster/dice/hotjob and include notes about comm skills, salary, etc...
Most of the resumes are up to date. |

That's what I was wondering, if his candidates were active on the job boards or passively searching. I can see the value in a database like that. How large of a database is it? Also is it nationwide or just in the Texas area? |

I've worked out of it a few times when he lets me and the ERP candidates are nationwide (oracle, sap, psfot) and the java/.net/sysadmin/dba/network/pm/qa candidates seem to be focused to Houston area. Think there's close to 8000 resumes (most with notes of previous conversation). just seems like a recruiting firm could knock out 10 or so perm placements and close about 175k (avg 17500/placement)

My guess would be that you would be setting yourself up for a lawsuit over privacy issues and any one of those people whose data you have, could sue... individually or collectively. All you would need is to have just one person's resume in the database whose information was collected with an agreement regarding privacy and you'd lose the case I believe. My advice is to consult an attorney before you do anything which is a generally accepted practice in starting any business venture for those very reasons. |

I have a database of IT, Pharmaceutical, Scientists, CRA, Nurses, Pharmacists, SAP and others from recruiting I have done over the last 2 years. |

It's not illegal. It is called public domain. If they sent you their resume then they have granted you access to their information. If you found them on a board at one point, same deal. Silly discussion. As for the value, you could probably take 10% of the resumes, in this case maybe 800, and associate a market specific value, say around $100-500 per resume, and then take the remaining and maybe associate a $50 per value and come up with a total. In this case, let's say the 800 are $200, that's $160k + $35k or $195k, ballpark. |

I also have a resume database I would like to sell.
I used to work with 2 of the big 4 consulting firms specifically on SAP requirements. Any ideas on how I might proceed? |

Tracy are you still recruiting? I have a great Nurse Practitioner that lives in Cincinnati, do you have any clients? He is available immediately to start work. Family/Internal, prefers not to do too much OB, but will. He is great and has been a nurse for several years. Please call me if you do
