What is the best training for becoming a hirable travel agent? What types of ongoing training or certifications are necessary to be an effective travel agent? What do non-traditional career paths look like? |

I worked in an airport for awhile, then worked in a travel agency. The travel agency is THE way to go if you're serious about a career in travel. Airport work, you'll get screamed at by frustrated passengers and the pay , generally speaking, for what you are describing is next to nothing. And with the sorry shape of the airline industry, I would NEVER work in an airport(for an airline) again. Travel agencies offer more chances for advancement and to learn (Tours, cruises, groups). Much more challenging than the airport jobs, in my opinion. Also, with most tickets "electronic" , there isn't much checking on the airport level. The auditors at the airlines check to make sure the correct fare was sold and the correct amount was collected and the fare adhered to applicable rules. It's a fun and interesting career, but it is a lot of work and dedication. Try a local travel agency to see if they have a school. Also, you may ask a local college if they have a travel program.

What kind of training do you possibly think you'll need to check tickets? Maybe you should work on your communication skills first and then worry about the difficult nature of making plane reservations. |

You need to have some knowledge of codes, how fares are calculated, fare basis, routings. Just because an airline goes somewhere, there are rules for the routings, and qualifiers
The job (reservation agent/ticket agent) isn't as easy as it looks.

With TraVerus travel, you'll get ongoing training and the materials you need to succeed as a certified travel agent. You will be able to book directly with the vendors, achieve certificates and you can be a specialist in many areas. Do the research and I'm available if you want to talk. I advise that you carefully look at what companies are out there, write em down and let's discuss why TraVerus is a better choice. Remember, they all make their websites look good, but they won't tell you everything...I will. "RP"
