I didnt say un ethical, all that was said is this trucking industry has Insurance guidelines in order to put a driver in a truck and down the road. Maybe you should e mail those companies to see what they are & quit ragging on me. |

If you are just getting into driving go with the big boys who offer in-house training. Truck driving schools tend to offer "Incentive$" to private/state run unemployment agencies to get people into their schools. Often times they knowingly take folks they can not get placed into a job with any company due to some event in their history. After all, you are paying the school to get your CDL. After you get your licence. There are no gaurantees of finding a job that suits your need(s). If you aply with a company that offers training,They tend to be more forthwright about your chance of being hired on as they don't have a vested interest in wasting time and $ & not being able to put you in their truck. (Always apply at a company that offers training before considering a "Trucking School.") At no cost to you. You will at least know without spending any of your $ what chance you have of getting hired. Try aplying @ the company you are most interested in first. Once you are hired you may have to sign a reimbusment clause stating pay-back terms for your training if you quit in a certain time period. Do your time with them. At least 2 years looks good on a resume. It takes more than a few weeks to get an idea of what a company is like. They all have faults! know that going into the business. You are looking into a life-changing business/lifestyle moreso than your next job. Most things in trucking seldom go according to plan. We plan & do our best to deal with the circumstances surrounding those plans to meet OTHER peoples needs/demands first & foremost to get paid. That is why it is called trucking and not a job. |

I was looking for a local job about 5 years ago & answered an add in the paper for a tri-axle position. Went to the interveiw with 11+ years experience (All kinds of trucks otr & tankers & flatbed ect.) They asked if I had a CDL w/endorsments? I told them I had the Alphabet on my licence, clean, no goofs. He gave me a 20min speel on how skilled of a job it was & I wasn't what he was looking for. (I figured he just had someone roll one on unlevel ground while dumping off or hoisted one into a tree, bridge, or power line or all of the above & just couldn't afford to hire me.) HA HA! You are in demand up here in these parts. |

Steve in Baltimore, Maryland said: I spent like $1200 for trucking school and can't find a job. I do not want to go OTR. I want a local job but everyone seems to be on their high horse or something. My record is clean and i'm a good driver. Just can't get my foot in the door and these OTR companys want me to be out to long. Does anyone know of a company were i could be over maybe 1 or 2 nights tops? Hey Steve. I have a freind who pulls for Cowan out of Baltimore! He loves it & has been there for over 10years. He pulls containers but runs the same freight lanes all the time and always seems to be trough the house or headed that way. He is an O/O but I see their green company trucks runnin all over the east coast. Try S&H up in York PA. The fleet manager is a real Human being who has been out there behind the wheel & still might take a run here & there to get out of the office. Or at least I know he still could. Best of luck to you! |

Hey does anyone know how insurance works when your a O/O? If you contract out with someone do you just need bobtail or can you buy the whole package with your own personal insurance? Do you have to deal with the insurance co. that the company you contracted out with deals with? |
|
David in Fort Smith, Arkansas 9 months ago |
I am researching CRST I have only found a little bad about them.(but you find about the same with all companies.) At the moment I am slotted to start CRST school, I might just have the gitters but before I sign anything I would like to see if they are as good or bad as I think. Thanks. |

If you contract out with someone do you just need bobtail or can you buy the whole package with your own personal insurance? Do you have to deal with the insurance co. that the company you contracted out with deals with? You have to make sure what coverage the carrier has on you, your equipment, your cargo, and yourself such as workers comp. A good reputable company will advise you prior to leasing on what is required of you and what is provided by them/will be in your lease agreement. If it isn't in your lease/they can't tell you what you are covered under. By no means lease on with them. In the end the truck owner/driver is held responsable for any number of things which means any & all things they can think of! What ever the carrier dosen't have it is up to YOU the truck owner to make sure you are insured. As an O/O IC, I have to carry property damage/liability, Comp/collision on tractor, unladen/empty, bobtail, and worker comp on myself. If you have a high risk/haz mat or high value load. The agent/broker or customer may request an additional insurance rider on top of your coverage to cover any added risk. Be sharp & keep asking questions. All the best to you & good luck! |

I was (Told)by them when I leased on that bobtail insurance was all that was required of me to purchase.

Thomas in Flint, Michigan 9 months ago |
Hey Lenny, the reason I ask is because my insurance agent told me that he can only give me bobtail insurance and the company i'm leasing from must supply the rest of the insurance while I'm working for them. So what your saying is if I buy my own truck and sign a contract with a company I can then supply everything for myself? |

So what your saying is if I buy my own truck and sign a contract with a company I can then supply everything for myself? Most insurance agents will only sell you bobtail/liability.Yes the company SHOULD cover you under their cargo claims,unladen/empty,property damage policies. A lot of them don't. If you wind up in an incident there are six ways to Sunday to put the liability on you. Just make sure you get an insurance card w/your tractor vin# Tractor Fleet# listed on your lessors policy roster & what your rig is covered for under their policy. Don't pull a load for them till you have one "IN HAND." Don't forget to get your Workers comp policy! Some States it's maditory to have now. It's cheap & worth $1/day. There is a company with a duck mascot who is AWEWSOME at protecting a driver.(Making a roadside repair on your truck or CO. trailer.) As an independnt you have to have it. In most cases companies don't offer it for a number of reasons. If your company Has an AAA+++ DOT rating, they may be able to cut you a great PACKAGE deal on insurance. If a number of treir drivers have alot of tickets, wrecks, dui,or DOT OOS violations, your going to pay BIG $. If you still want to pull for a particular CO. There is an O/O organization OOIDA who has affliate insurance offeres for their members. (My cousin is a member) & says it's a good value & they stand by their members. Don't forget to check out any companys DOT rating before you lease on with them. The better the rating, the better deal on insurance & more respect from DOT officials. |

US XPRESS=I never worked for them, but heard how they strand applicants miles from home at Orientation sites and how they screw up people's DAC Reports You are so very right bunnygirl!! I have even been thinking about driving a bus lately. My story goes as so..I started my driving career in Dec. 2004 with USXPRESS and stayed with them until I decided to switch over to a company called BEECH FREIGHT SYSTEMS out of LITTLE ROCK, AR....BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!

I AGREE ABOUT THE STRIKE NEVER WORKING BECAUSE TRUCKDRIVERS WOULD NEVER STICK TOGETHER TO DO THAT BUT AS FAR AS THE DAC GOES, COMPANIES CAN PUT WHATEVER THEY WANT ON IT ANYWAYS, YA DON'T HAVE TO MESS UP TO GET BLACKBALLED ON YOUR DAC! I FOUND THAT OUT THE HARD WAY... |
|
Rob jones in Sikeston, Missouri 8 months ago |
doesnt matter if you stick together, if you go on strike the national guard will haul that frieght until they find a replacement driver. Then good luck finding another job. Best thing to do is think before you vote this election/do your homework. |
|
DIXIEBELL in Centre, Alabama 8 months ago |
what if you do your homework and decide that none of them are worth wasting your time going to the polls for? ya have to admit, our choices for presidents in the past haven't been very good and seems they are getting worse with each new election! as most of us already know, doesn't really matter who we elect to the white house, it's the one's who control him/her once they get there!! |

Well....everyone is talking about the worst....but how about the BEST trucking jobs.......I have been with ABF for 26 years...as a city driver outside Philly...and as a road/Utility driver....and i have to say they are the cream of the crop..... great equipment....new trailers....very safety conscious.... great working conditions....great dispathchers....great co-workers....I have 31 years in the pension (5 years at McLean trucking) in the Teamsters philly area supp..and my pension would be $3700...if I retired today..and i am only 56. there is a lot of negative talk about the union on here...and you're entitled to YOUR opinion...but most of it is heresay as most of you have never worked for a union company ...I'M telling you first hand...a UNION job is almost ALWAYS better than a non union job! I was a great driver 0 accidents no late appointments and never late for work and my logs were 100%. I had a safety issue and they refused to call road service while i was still at the terminal so i refused a unsafe load that would possible harm others and me. You sound like the type of driver that s...s up and s...s under the table to get what you want. You can have Jb Hunt because i work for a union trucking company now making over 24.00 a hour. Have fun with your 45 cents per mile. Ohh and your grammer needs work!! lol lol |

I also have about 20 MISTIMEANERs also. so my rap sheet is a mile long. I have aslo been offered many OTR jobs making 40 or better per mile. just keep your driving record clean and time helps alot with criminal backgrounds. If they see you are good for 7 or more years they feel bettr about hireing you. A John if you are still reading these things, can you tell me what company you are working for. Hey David, If you are thinking bout going w/crst, from experience they are just bout like anyone else that train drivers for their cdl a. One good thing about crst you get paid twice a week. But you must have in your paperwork (trippak) in at a curtin time. I dont know if you want to go solo. I know they said they have solo drivers in the east and everywhere else is team. I have a guy in the trk w/me and he wanted to smoke weed (u no those funny rolling cigs.) on duty and in the trk. You will find out that running teams you will have problems w/ur teamdriver or he/she will have a problem w/u. In the 8mos. 2weeks I was w/crst I went through 5 co-drivers. Some of them could bearly drive moreless read a map, pre-trip and other things you have to do to get there safe. I'm not blaming those drivers, however when you start that training please make sure that they train you so you will know what to do and when to do it, cause they are just going to try to push you through the course and thats not really good. Hell they had me to help them teach pretrip airbrakes the drivers in my class due to me already having experience w/cl b. The choice is your, my suggestion is to call around and weigh the option of other company that will train. I didn't. |

The guy told the officer I had pulled out in front of him he even admitted he was goin up to 80 mph I told the officer my side of the story but in the accident report he left out parts of my statement and said I caused the accident unsafe lane change.
