John in Martinsburg, West Virginia said: If your willing to go over the road then Swift or Jb hunt or schneider might hire you. Try for a small Ma and pap trucking company. Jb Junt scre... me and now i cant find a job because they are black balling me i cant even get a factory job.
I know how u feel dude i feel your pain!!

Later

J.B. Hunt tried screwing ME, too. They had me go all the way up to Chicago, IL for their Orientation, and told me routes they had were already filled. I was then bussed home, but they put "Discharged" on my DAC Report---so how can I be "Discharged" when I wasn't hired in the first place? I had to get in touch with DAC Report Co., told them what had happened, as almost a month later, J.B. Hunt removed false information from my DAC Report. I got out of truck driving school in 2006, found nothing but CRUD jobs in trucking, as there's very few miles, while the mileage pay is extra low. I couldn't afford living on the very measley 20-something cents per mile, so ended up "job-hopping", hoping to find a better company that would have the routes and miles. I got one worse trucking job than the previous one, so only drove less than 6 mos. OTR. If I wasn't going through bi-polar wacko "Trainers from Hell", I was making VERY LOW training pay, as this is usually $250-$350/week, if one is lucky to get even THAT. Then once training is done, hardly no miles, while stuck making 26-29 cents a mile. No local trucking company will hire me, as I keep getting same answer: "Come back when you get another year or two of OTR experience". How can one GET that experience, if only those very few companies hiring out of trucking schools treat drivers worse than "terds in a toilet", making them live on such sub-servient incomes, which isn't even enough to keep up your house or apartment payments, along with living out OTR? I might as well be a felon, as these carriers treat mainly newby drivers as such.

Deric G in San Mateo, California said: Yea all them truck company's have something wrong with them. I give up looking for a trucker job. it's to much bull and all of them Lie.

You got that right! I only have a few months OTR experience, as I couldn't find hardly find any trucking co. that was halfway decent to work for. Their recruiters will LIE to get you up in let's say Green Bay, WI,then "Scheider Liars" decide not to pay you for your time or travel there as promised--I had Swift to this to me, too recently. J.B. Hunt LIED, told me that they had routes out of my area, but none when I went to their Orientation in Chicago, IL; Werner Enterprises makes their drivers stay in hotels for months, when you are supposed to be given training for 2 weeks, mostly nasty trainers they have; and then after that, can't find any trucking co. offering me decent pay; etc. I applied at Falcon Transport, as I waited for a couple of weeks for them to decide to hire me or not;but, they insisted my LEGAL DOT Card wasn't any good, wanted me to PAY for my own Physical to work for them--screw that idea! Not many decent carriers giving newer drivers a chance, so it's either starve and be treated worse than dung by them for a year or so to get OTR experience, or be like me, look into driving a school or charter bus. At least you will meet more professional people driving a charter bus, and if you don't mind kids, then school bus driving has much better working conditions. The drawback is many of the schools want you to pay your own Physical; Background Check; etc. upfront, while not paying you one penny to train you. If you are stuck working 1st shift jobs, you are screwed on getting any available trainer to train you in driving school bus, so school allows you to take their bus up to Testing Station for your needed Passenger and School Endorsement to put on your CDL A or B License. Charter Bus driving requires only a Passenger Endorsement, pays pretty decent.

hightechredneck in Charles Town, West Virginia said: STAY AWAY FROM SCHNEIDER. LIE LIE LIE IS ALL THESE PEOPLE DO

You are so right! Schneider LIED to me, said they would pay me for my Orientation and time up there in Green Bay, WI, only to turn around and not pay me one red cent! Many other driver applicants went home before I did, disgusted they weren't going to be paid, as I gave up on trucking, like others in this forum did. With me looking like the feminine woman I am, I am hugely discriminated against by many trucking cos., as they are looking more for "man-ish looking females" behind their wheels! Then I don't have no more than a few mos. OTR experience, couldn't afford living OTR for such extra low-mileage pay and not getting enough miles, so had no choice but to get out of it. I can't even find a local box-truck job, as they also tell me, "Come back when you get a year or two of OTR experience." How can anyone get that experience, when no decent carrier will hire him/her to give person a good chance? Going broke and being treated worse than dung by these carriers is not the answer, nor would I call this finding a "better career". Trucking schools lie big-time to get students' money, even about making great money driving OTR, when nothing can be further from the truth. No Detention Pay waiting at docks for hours; hardly any pay per day, if you get any at all waiting at truck stops for days on loads; etc., this is BELOW poverty-level! Live out of your truck only as home and this is the only way you can afford "1-2 years OTR experience" these better-paying trucking jobs require! Falcon Transport wanted ME to pay for my own Physical, saying my LEGAL DOT Card was no good, as they know it expires in a few mos., so didn't want to pay for my Recertification, being "cheap". I turned this job down, now going for bus driving, thinking positive about me passing Bus Driving Test to get my Passenger Endorsement put on my CDL.

Deric G in San Mateo, California said: Yea all them truck company's have something wrong with them. I give up looking for a trucker job. it's to much bull and all of them Lie.

Also, I am sure you can also see WHY these trucking companies can't find people to drive trucks for them! They treat drivers and applicants SO HORRIBLY, worse than manure, even "strand applicants" miles away from home at their Orientation sites, telling them "We didn't hire you, so go find your own way home." Yeah, right, over 100 miles from home and now stuck paying for own bus ticket and taxi fare getting to bus station, which thank God, never happened to me, but to others! Swift lied about reimbursing me for expenses, so I was out the gas money driving 112 miles one-way up to their Columbus terminal. I am not perfect at stick shifting; but, I can get it into gear. Two men were not even able to shift from one gear to the next, even practically stalled truck during Road Test and the rude Road Tester passed THEM---there was lots of "anti-female" vibes up there, as he can't admit he didn't pass me because of my gender, but how do you explain him giving the guy applicants, ones that can't even shift gears at all a passing grade, while flunking me? This was the very last Orientation I went to, not able to find a decent job in my area, as most are low-paying temp service jobs, so having to work for $8.00/hour, while continuing to look for more permanent employment--right now, unemployed, since even the temp services hardly have any work. Then Falcon Transport wants me to "PAY THEM" to work for them, saying my LEGAL DOT Card is not valid, wanting me to pay for my own Physical--screw that idea, as I am sick and tired of even temp services wanting to charge me and others "fees" for Drug Screens, etc. just to go on a low-paying temp service job or some other low-paying position. Then in the newspaper, $7.69/hour for a Landscaper; very hard, physical work for such cruddy pay!

Scott Hooten in Bastrop, Texas said: I am interested in Trucking what should I avoid in starting out?

Here's the companies to avoid like a plague and why: J.B.HUNT = They will LIE to you, treat you live vomit, and then try screwing up your DAC Report. WERNER ENT.=They will tell you that your training is 2 weeks---you end up 2 mos. or more waiting in hotel for various trainers, then goes against you on DAC Report, as then a potential carrier wonders why you were in "so-called training" all that time. SCHNEIDER=They lie about paying you to get you to Green Bay, WI; then, they turn around and say you aren't classified as a truck driver, only a "student" at their Orientation, as other drivers end up going home disgusted like I was. FALCON TRANSPORT=They want YOU to pay for your own Physical, so when your LEGAL DOT Card is near renewal, they use excuse of you having to pay for Physical, since they only pay for Recerifications of DOT Card once you are hired and driving for them; US XPRESS=I never worked for them, but heard how they strand applicants miles from home at Orientation sites and how they screw up people's DAC Reports, like J.B. Hunt does. SWIFT= Again, lie to get you up to Orientation, as applicants are stuck paying their own way home, while I was out the gas money driving 112 miles one-way up there. With these and many other horror experiences, including extremely wacko, bi-polar trainers, I am sorry I ever went to trucking school, paying big bucks to only have cruddy companies like these hire newbies, while 99% of other carriers won't hire you as a driver, until you put up STARVING 1-2 years OTR, while being treated worse than dung! Mileage pay is extra low, no more than 26-29 cents/mile, while you have no Detention Pay waiting hours at docks; finding yourself making no mileage pay stranded at truck stops days at a time waiting on loads. Driving a bus is more alluring than OTR trucking is now!!!!

You can see a lot of the country that God created first six months are an adventure for sure truck driving is a job
and no trucking company is a travel agency they take freight as they get it.
I ve been over the road 12plus years ran more than million and half miles without any accidents/tickets you have to pay attention to what you are doing. Many times drove thru town I live in dont have time to stop because you have an appointment to make.It better than working in factory and a lot of it is what you make of it.Some people work their whole life to save to retire and buy an RV to see country.I ve seen the
country and have been paid to do it.Negative people have to ignore and go on.

I had two DUI's. One in 1984 and one in 1990. My MVR is clean but I worked for a tree cutting company out of state and let my CDL expire. Companies are willing to work with me on the expired DL but most only want one DUI in a lifetime. Does anyone know a way around that? I just want one chance to show what I can do with a good company.

at 58y.o. i would contact a company like schneider and see if they want to train you, there is alot to learn in this trade even if some say its un skilled labor. Its not all sight seeing. There are alot of changes on the horizon such as h.o.s. and documentation/citizenship. your better off waiting a year or two, that should give you a while to call around and get an idea who to sign up with.

I have told people I will work for half the price and still no one will give me a chance. what a waist of money I put into truck driving school. any one have a suggestion email me at rickbozora@yahoo.com

I wanted to reply to you and say I am having the same problem. I call the big orange ball up they said it was a good chance I would get hire. Then I call them back they said I was never to be hire ever. I was shocked. I have one felony that I had reduce expunged and removed never went to prison for. But because several company's say I am not eligible for rehire. A lot of company's say no. I though there was a driver shortage. I have a CDL with all the endorsements. But the first thing I notice was that company's get on the T.V. and claim there is a shortage I see why there are good drivers out there like us that they wont even hire. So a person made a couple of mistakes don't hold that against them the rest of there life's. Everyone is trying to make money.

My comment is very simple "driver b-ware" I am a proffesional driver of over 25yrs. I have only in the last few weeks that I have seen the worlst trucking company on the planet. They R Priority Transport. Their recruiters will lie and say anything to get a driver to work for them. I was prommised a certian amount of money per/mile, home time weekly, and a safe, clean IH eagle 9400i. What I got was 5cents permile less than promised, home time became every 2 wks instead of weekly and the truck, well the word JUNK cant describe it. I was also told that 2cents per mile of my pay would b deducted for idleing the truck, now it has no APU system, bunk heater and Idle air isnt always available in the north east. SO with alot of help from folks from the NYState Dept of Labor, a lawyer and the NY State police i was able to turn my truck in today...amen the nightmare is over, TO ALL DRIVERS: If your gonna change jobs just beware, I am returning to my old job because the "grass wasnt greener" on the other side. Most of all dont work for Priority Transport!!!!

Sorry, the driving schools make it sound like you get your CDL and all the carriers want you. You are too high of a risk with the record and no experience to boot.
JJ. Sorry to hear about the medical problems. If you were to have an accident you could loose everything. Law firms can dig deep and find out. I did find out that the DOT has a new Medical Review Board that is looking into changing the current law. The next hearing that is open to the public is in Salt Lake on 1/28/08. Don't let Deric get you down, you still have something to offer the industry. Deric is just reconfirming why no one will hire him. Good luck.

Sorry flatbed, i disagree with your comment on giving an ex-felon the keys. If they are older than 10 years most of the large companies don't care (Yes, I have a felony, yes, I've worked for JB Hunt, CFI, USXpress to name a few)

You owe it to yourself AND to the companies to give them a fair shake, and I don't mean 2 or 3 months. Yeah, so maybe you don't get home much or when you need to, or maybe you don't always get the miles you need, or maybe you lose time and money cause you are broke down somewhere (you haven't lived till you work for a company that has such bad credit they can't fix a tire on the side of the road and they leave you there for a couple of days)or maybe your brainless dispatcher/driver manager doesn't understand what you go through (do you understand what THEY go through?)but so what? This is trucking man. If you are having trouble getting a job, FIND ANOTHER JOB, if you are having trouble keeping a job, TAKE A HARD LOOK AT YOURSELF, maybe you ain't cut out for this stuff, if you messed up (CRIME DOES NOT PAY WHEN YOU GET CAUGHT) accept that you messed up and it will make your life rougher and get on with your life.

Geez, WAAAAA! WAAAAA! WAAAAAAAAAA! We got enough crybabies on the road as it is, WHOOP! WHOOP! Truck'em up I gotta go, keep the greasy side down and the shiny side up!!

As an ex-con myself i can honestly say i agree. Who i drive for makes me push the limits everyday, but hey it payin dues and bills. So what the hell, bite the bullet and do it. Thanks for your honesty.

Mike in Jacksonville, Florida said: I have a CDL-A with all the endorsements - but have only driven locally - not OTR exp..... I want to change jobs and go OTR - all the companies I contact tell me I have to go back to school before they will even consider me (I've had a CDL-A for over 10 years - with over 1/2 those years employed - driving locally - usually hauling/Dump truck type work). Does this sound right to have to pay to go to school? Any advice?
Also - my wife wants to join me (second career thing) team OTR... she needs to get her CDL-A = is it better to have her go to school (we pay or get a loan) and then she/we can decide on which companies - or should she consider the companies that will PAY/Give her training (CDL) and then you have a contract... She's been considering CRST - training program & going with them... or getting CDL- traing through our local Community college.... (but that's a good deal of time with NO income - like 8 weeks - and then there is the tuition). Any advice/experience you could share here???

Be very careful, with company training, most have you sign on for a min. of 1yr or if you leave early you pay " " the rest of the tuition wich is usually more than a private school tution.

Bunnygirl in Cincinnati, Ohio said: Here's the companies to avoid like a plague and why: J.B.HUNT = They will LIE to you, treat you live vomit, and then try screwing up your DAC Report.

Bunnygirl, look into Lowwe's if you have one in your area. They are a local delivery driving day cab 36' flatb
