I am a broker and married to a truck driver. Our shipper informed us that Schneider and JB Hunt contacted them through email and offered to move their freight during the strike. The large powerful companines to not care about high fuel prices and would love for the independants to go under. More freight for them right? |

I think deregulation made this industry less profitable. If there was a system in place that gave a surcharge of one dollar per loaded mile back to the person that paid at the pump and that cost was to be passed directly to the consumer. And if the national average for diesel when up, that raise in the price for diesel would be added to the dollar a mile surcharge. Brokerage firms could not charge no more than eight percent per truck load. Shippers must furnish there own pallets or charge the receiver for said cost. Receivers must unload there freight from the carriers trailer or charge the shipper to unloading the receivers freight. Shippers and receivers have a maximum of two hours to load or unload or be charged by the carrier because the carrier is regulated to 14 hours on duty 11 hours driving. Did I leave anything out? I'm sorry that I didn't know whom deregulated us, lets move forward. |

The shutdown has to be longer than 1 day folks. If y'all are thinking that 1 day is all it will take then you are wrong. I promise that 3 days of no grocery deliveries and such will change things drastically. 1 Day of no fuel deliveries would cause so much turmoil you would not believe. I say this as an ex-gas hauler and have seen the effects and the way folks act when their favorite station runs out of fuel. So many gas stations and so hard to catch back up if they all run out, and normally they are almost out when they order their gas. A 3 day shutdown would cause a backlog of loads that even the big companies couldn't possibly cover and then we make our demands when they want their commodities moved. Think about that, I could be wrong. |

If most of the trucking companies of the United States came together and imposed a fuel surcharge of one dollar per loaded mile and for no load to be less than $1.50 a mile to the truck. Would the shippers and brokers have to honor it? If yes, would it be simpler to get organized on a fuel surcharge than a shutdown? If no, is there another regulation we are violating? |

I doubt HIGHLY that enough truckers will get involved in such a strike and don't think anyone should be very worried... From what I've heard and read, the intent seems to be aimed at resolving high fuel costs, therefore, some independent truckers may want to get involved while no company truckers would get involved, thus the result would have little impact. Even IF the nations truckers would all go on strike, the national guard would simply be brought into service to deliver required items to 'special' locations. I for one am quite sure it's a fabricated hoax... :-) |

The strike has made Nashville TN News! However, they say the big companies will not comment and they are not sure if it is an April Fools Joke or not.
See, I have been in the middle of this Mortgage Crisis. All congress wants to do is blame the broker- who was only selling what was on the investors menu. Much like the broker who robs you blind in o/o world. Brokering Freight or Mortgages it all works basically the same. The bottom line is the good ole USA is in trouble. And, as usual Congress tries to hide it. The only thing that pulled our economy out of the Great Depression in the 20's was Industry. Now, most industry has been shipped over seas. That in return has cost Americans "Thousands" of Jobs. How do you pay a mortgage pymt when you are not working? Then rising fuel cost that lines Wall-Streets pockets. Stock is also a broker trade! That cost gets passed to the consumers-every item we purchase has gone up. Now with the fuel cost, it is not just o/o hurting. Trust Me. It is Middle and low class as a whole. Larger companies are now charging a 30% sur-charge for fuel cost on freight; and every thing will go up again. WE ALL NEED TO STRIKE - and I also agree that it needs to be more than 1 day. 7 days sounds good to me! |

Steve Wolfe in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania said: I doubt HIGHLY that enough truckers will get involved in such a strike and don't think anyone should be very worried... In case you did not know it most National Guard trucks are not highway trucks and at best have a hard time doing 55MPH. If you have ever been on the highway you will notice many a Hummer, and other military gear being hauled by owner operators not the government. The National Guard can not make up for a major shut down, at best perhaps escort some loads but even then with troop deployment that would be questionable.

I for one am quite sure it's a fabricated hoax... :-) You, sir, haven't the faintest clue what you're talking about. This discussion isn't some fearful prediction of doom; it's an assertion of the elemental right of businessmen to profit. It apparently never occurred to you that the very thread you're posting on contains four pages of die-hard truckers swearing to ground their rigs, or that this one website represents only a tiny fraction of all such individuals in the U.S. prepared to temporarily forgo their own profits in an effort to bring about change that will benefit us all. The very fact that these brave souls, these few out of likely many thousands of such drivers, are planning on going through with your "hoax" proves your asinine little theory wrong. So wipe that arrogant little emote smile off your face and return to your white collar, 4-wheelin', ignorant life, and leave America's immovable movers to go about the business of keeping the nation afloat. |

April 1st thru April 3rd NATIONAL TRUCKER STRIKE !!! It will take 3 days to achieve our goals and get our point across. In just 3 days, every grocery store and convenience store will be out of food. Every truck stop and gas station will be out of fuel. Every factory or production facility will be out of one or more raw materials to make their product(s). Every coal-burning facility, like power plants, will be out of coal.
$1.00 per mile freight(which includes fuel surcharge), 1500 mile load, 5 MPG fuel economy(average) equals 300 gal. to run load @ $4.per gal. So, i made $300 to pay for the rest of the truck expenses, plus pay driver, plus try to make a profit (since this is a business)?

its not going to take every truck to shut down if you think about it 150,000 trucks would leave 150,000 loads sitting dockside for tree days thats a lot of freight not going to stores, and average 37,500,000 galons of fuel not used each day, think about the efect just the fuel drop will have on the fuel industries, theres no way every truck will shut down ever, when you have big companys, ( swift, jb werner, ex) telling there drivers who just graduated there piss poor excuse of schools that if the strike the company will can them and charge them back 3 times for there schooling, 150,000 trucks for 3 days will make an impact, enough to make are point to the fuel industries and these brokers for these 150,000 loads, there are not enought trucks on the road now to move all the freight, like i said in my pre post, all my trucks are parked from sunday night till wendsday night, and i thank every one else who parks and participates, |

I recommend no one goes on strike!! I live and drive in NJ and a majority of us haven't heard about the Strike on April 1st. Because of that we have decided not to go through with it because of the obvious lack of support. SO PLEASE WE NEED TO GIVE IT SOME TIME TO REALLY ORGANIZE INSTEAD OF WAISTING A DAY OF PAY!!! Spread the word to your coworkers, do not let it happen YET! |

I have dump trucks it cost 488.00 day per truck to fuel up. Nobody is going to give me the money it takes for me to make a profit. Come Tuesday SHUT-ER-DOWN These people say they cant make it if they stay out of work for very long, they must be making more money than I am. We have to shut down there is no other way. If you think products in stores are high you are wrong. They are actually artificially low because truck drivers and trucking companies have been absorbing the ever-increasing operating expenses as well as the inflation rate.

Talking to a company who has nine units. My fuel bill is about $35,000 week. How are the larger companies making it? |

Attaboy...Everybody should stay home, even the factory workers, the high cost of gas and fuel affect everyone. It looks to me like everyone in this country should back this strike and stay home too. The lower class and middle class people are getting tired of being screwed over, trying to live pay day to pay day - trying to keep the bill collectors at bay. The goverment doesn't care - look at how much help they've given to families who are losing their homes. When you deal with dishonest, money hungry people they don't care about anything but the money and some of them even go to church on a weekly bases pretending to be a good religious person. I love my country and I pray this strike works cause I'm sick and tired of trying to just make ends meet. Our gov't and big business should be ashamed and embarressed at the needless stress they've caused people. "I LOVE MY COUNTRY BUT I DON"T TRUST OUR gov"t" |
