Ultra- I attended a program in my hometown that is run by the hospital. You actually had to physically be there for classes, I just wanted to make the point that as long as you have your BA/BS you CAN sit for the test right away. |

Thanks Caitlin! I just want to have a backup plan in case I'm not accepted into the 2 accredited programs that I am applying to. Those are my first 2 choices b/c tuition is much cheaper and I get to be in class everyday..either clinicals or classroom! Thanks again! I'm excited either way! :) |

Hey there- this is regarding the required scanning sessions. I just called and they no longer require distance students to travel. She said we would not have to go to ATL at ALL. I would imagine it's not feasible to make us travel considering most of the students are probably distance. The lady was very helpful, I am feeling extremely good about this school :) |

Ok...well that's great! IMU is my 3rd choice. I am hoping they get accredited soon...that's a big factor for me! I know that I can still sit for registry but I looked at some jobs here in TN and they want you to have attended an accredited school in addition to having your RDMS cert. |

Ultra-have you considered any other online schools? |
|
ultra in Middle, Tennessee 8 months ago |
lostnconfused in Mississippi....yes, I'm still waiting to hear from Mountain State online...they are accredited but I'm unsure if they accept people that don't have a medical background...I am looking into employment at an OB/GYN office after graduation with my B.S. in May...also, they want 10 hrs of anat & phys and i have 8, I haven't taken intro to health sciences, and I am taking physics this summer for the 2 programs here in TN...I already have $30k in student loans for getting my undergrad, I don't want to have to pay out alot more just to take more pre-reqs for Mountain State. I'm applying first to the 2 programs here in TN and if I'm not accepted into them, IMU in Atlanta is my choice-whether accredited or not. I have my B.S. so I'll get to sit for registry upon completion of the US program. :) |

That's fine. Your A&P classes should be enough though, their credit hours just counts differently than yours. The only thing you would lack is Med Terminology if you haven't taken it previously. That could be covered at a CC summer class.

I've had medical terminology too. The reason for paying another $27k for school is so that I can do what I REALLY want to do. I'm willing to pay if it means that I'll be getting to do what I really want to do in life. I'm not going to sit in a office behind a desk all day and do something that I'm misrable with doing. I passion is sonography--I'm going to make it real. $57k in student loan debt isn't much considering that I will be fulfilling 2 things---My passion and I've obtained my B.S. and a certicate, and not to forget mentioning the kind of income of sonographers. It's worth it to me! :) |

Lauren Jones in Ontario, California said: Hello. I am very curious about this field. I wonder, Can anyone tell me how long a typical Ultrasound program lasts? Does anyone know of a good school in, around or near Ontario, CA. that is accredited by the ARDMS? Lauren, they range from 1-2 years. You have to have 12 months to be able to sit for ARDMS registry. |

Yeah, I hope that I get into one of the programs in TN too...they are quite competitive and my GPA isn't all that competitive-that's why I'm scared! |

Scanr in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania said: I came across this post while looking for degree completion programs online- I have been a registered sonographer for almost 16 years-DO NOT use Sanford-Brown or Ultrasound diagnostic school!! It is a rip-off!! I went there 16 years ago and was very lucky to have an excellent clinical site, and they trained me and then I had to wait 2 yrs to take the registry due to the non-accreditation of the school. I was one of the lucky ones. Graduates of these schools are Not sought after! I tried several years ago to get a BA in Health Arts, but Ultrasound Diagnostic School did not have any formal records and the classes were not accredited and did not transfer. Now i am hoping that with my registries i am able to get going onto a degree program. So please, check out your community college programs. Sonography is a very demanding career, it's not all pretty babies and happy people. It is tough work that can be rewarding, but you must have the proper clinical training to do it. Are you referring to the Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics?

Keisha in Saint Petersburg, Florida said: Go to CAAHEP website, choose from the menu: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, check the "online" box- you will see the list of accredited online schools and their websites. Online schools do teach you theory online , but most of the time is spent on clinical sites. Hi, do you have a 2 year degree or are you already in the health field? I am just barely getting my "required 48 credits." I hope that this will not be an issue when I go to pass the boards. IUD says it will not be a problem, but I am so skeptical. Also, I am skeptical about the fact that you can't go through with the FAFSA for federal aid, only private loans.

I thought it was a bachelors degree. could you explain this for me. |
|
Susan in Lennoxville, Quebec 8 months ago |
Hi, I applied for admission to IUD's program. They sent me a booklet. In this booklet, it states that the minimum requirements are to have a high school diploma OR GED AND a 2 year college degree in a health related field
This is the 48 credits I am referring to. however, if you visit the website for testing, the ARDMS site I believe, there are prerequisites listed for being eligible to sit for the exam . I do not see this 48 credit requirement being listed, all I see is the 2 year health related degree preqrequisite. |

I am interested in the Keiser University, Diagnostic Medical Sonography. It seems very expensive for an A.S. degree. I would appreciate any comments or experiences with the University with this program. I understand it is on the CAAHEP list and the ARDMS. Thank You |

From what I know here in FL, they are a very good school but hard to get into- I was told there is a waiting list for the Daytona school all the way up till 2010.

Thank you for your response. I have had my transcripts sent and because of my bachlors degree and G.P.A., I only have 4 pre-requisites. It just seems like a lot of money for an associate degree. Thanks again and good luck to also. |

Gotta love when they pull that stuff. I've worked in dental for 4+yrs so hopefully that will be enough for them. I'm currently going to a junior college for most of my pre reqs before transfering there or greenville, sc. Any advice or information is always needed.

Since the Sonography program I was researched at Keiser Univ. cost $38,000, I am looking into Central New Mexico community college in Albquerque. Any comments or experiences about their Diagnostic Sonography medical program is appreciated. I understand their program is accredited by CAAHEP and ARDMS. Thank you |

Well, I'm definetly choosing Mountain State. I've got almost everything in and they have begun working on my transfer credits. Looks like everything is transferring over pretty well too. I just really hope I get into the program and I'm able to get the financial aid that I need. I don't know if I can get any federal funding since I used it for my undergrad degree. 37 days til graduation!! Yeah! |
|
Susan in Lennoxville, Quebec 8 months ago |
Transfer credits are going well? I was really concerned because they require a basic math, then a basic algebra and then a college algebra. Do you have all three of these? I like the idea that they offer an associate's versus a certificate and that federal aid is available. I also like that their classes are eight weeks long. Where did you take your prerequisites and what is your undergrad degree in if you don't mind me asking? |
|
Caitlin in Apo 8 months ago |
Do you live within 100 miles of the campus? I see that's required for the associates and bachelor's at mountain state. |
|
ultra in Cookeville, Tennessee 8 months ago |
My undergrad is in Interdisciplinary Studies...I've met all pre-reqs for the program except physics(which I'm taking this summer) and the Intro to Health Sciences. I live in TN so no, I don't live within 100 miles of the school, I'm doing the online certificate program. I took calculus for my undergrad so they substituted that for my math since it's such a high level math course. I also have 2 other math courses, college algebra and another college level math. They all worked. I graduate May 3rd with my undergrad. |

The schools here are so competive, I'm working on getting into Mountain State this summer. If I were working on the TN schools, it would be next year before I would apply or even find out if I get in...MSU is the first choice at the moment...my focus right now! |

Ultra is right- IAMP is an accredited college- but not by who matters most, CAAHEP. So unless you have a Bachelor's degree or a 2 year allied health degree, I'd steer clear. |

...but as you notice -- NOT CAAHEP -- and it isn't listed on the caahhep website either. |

Still looking for DMS program that isn't too expendsive. I would appreciate any comments or experiences with Greenville Technical College, Ashville-Buncombe Technical Community College, and Boise State University. Thank you |
|
Jen in Leesburg, Florida 8 months ago |
I've been talking w/Greenville, Sc- cost wise I can't remember the exact amount but it wasn't that bad. I've heard good things about them and their counselors seem to know their stuff (which is sorta rare)and will try to work w/you as much as possible. You have to do a Career Talk which is usually held on campus once a month and it's good for about 1yr prior to taking the second part of the program- they will send you the information in the mail if you ask.

I think alot of us are going the online route because there are no programs available in our area. For those who do actually have programs in their area, I believe there are waiting lists and the cost is just as high. Can you tell us something about the job market? Did you have any trouble finding employment? And, also if you don't mind sharing, how much do they start a new graduate with little or no experience?

Hello, I have recently decided, after some serious consideration that sonography. was something i wanted to venture into. I am currently a stay at home mom with no prior medical education or experience. I was wonder if anyone knows of any online schools that do not require you to have an associates in the medical field when applying Or accredited by the CCHEAP schools in the NY area that i might be able to start in my path towards sonography. I am willing to take prerequisites.. I am starting to take some in order to take the entrance exam to a school yet i know how competitive it is and would like to have options. If anyone could provide helpful advice to someone starting from scratc and completely lost i would greatly appreciate it.. thank you...
|
|
ultra in Middle, Tennessee 8 months ago |
Hey fresh steps, you're going to have to take all of your pre-reqs before they will take you into one of these programs. It's very competitive and there are certain classes that they want you to have already taken, even the online schools want you to have these certain courses out of the way before applying. email me: crispysgirl@gmail.com |
