I took the spi test today , I did my studing only in the eddelmans book that I got in a seminar and didn't pass. I'm going to buy a different book and maybe a cd. I can only tell u to buy a different book and not just study from the eddelmans book bec it would be a waste of time and money !!!!!

I hope not to offend anyone with this posting but if anyone is interested in being a sonographer, then your education must be taken very seriously. This is a medical profession and you will have real people's lives in your hands. You cannot get by memorizing what you learn in school. You need to know and understand what you are learning. I have seen too many people asking for study tips and cheat sheets. That is ridiculous! Are you not confident enough in your instructors and yourself? I know we all have our weaknesses when it comes to learning, but let's get a grip here. I certainly would not want any sonographer performing and exam on me or any of my loved ones who made it through any program simply by memorizing. Anyone can memorize but it takes a dedicated student to take the time and effort to understand what he/she is doing and WHY?

As for those who are not passing the SPI, you absolutely CANNOT pass this test by memorization alone. You MUST understand the relationships and the fundamental concepts of ultrasound physics. It can be an intimidating subject, but you will ABSOLUTELY need to know this stuff when you are performing an exam. Anyone who tells you that you don't need to know what PRF has to imaging depth obviously does not know him or herself. Going to the review seminars are for the purpose of REVIEWING what you should have already learned. Again, I hope no one is offended but I have worked with some very good sonographers and some who were not so good. Although they may have been getting by some how, I personally know one who failed abdomen 3 times and just recently failed the SPI...she is now out of a job. This is serious business folks. Let's take the learning seriously as well.

Just my 2 cents.

@Erica U in Essex

I understand what your trying to say. And I also agree with you that ultrasound education should be taken seriously and not every thing can be memorized. But I will have to differ with you about SPI and not memorizing. Yes, you need to understand doppler, hemodynamics, artifact etc. But there are a lot of useless things in SPI that we as a sonographer don't even need to know. There is nothing wrong with asking for study sheets or help. If I was ever sick I rather have a sonographer that knew what they were looking at and were excellent scanners then someone that got a perfect score on the SPI exam. There are so many "fly-by" schools now a days that the least of my worries is if they know SPI. I have students right now that are so clueless on anatomy and pathology, but are graduating in a few months. That is what is something to be worried about rather then people memorizing SPI. All I like to tell future sonographers is remember, what you see is what the doctor sees. What you know is what the doctor knows. Don't play with peoples lives, just imagine if that was your loved one on the table. Make sure you go to a good school, that is accredited by CCAHEP, that gives you at least a 1000 ours of clinical rotations and has a good reputation in the field. Do your research on schools, don't go by false advertising. Ultrasound is not a easy field to understand to begin with. Its a operator depended modality, which puts it apart from all other radiology modalities. So be the best and nothing less in ultrasound. Good luck everyone.

I suppose I could ask YOU that same question. No one asked me, however this is an OPEN forum. Just as anyone can ask for help on passing an exam that ALL SONOGRPAHERS (BOTH GOOD AND BAD) MUST PASS, then anyone can make comments, myself included. Such a negative attitude!

unknown83,

The advice you give your students is sound advice, and you have every right to disagree. Those things you mentioned such as Doppler, hemodynamics and artifacs are very important, but there is a great deal more to the science that just those three. With many things we learn in life, there is "fluff", the stuff we can memorize, but I am referring to the science behind ultrasound physics that cannot be memorized. Each button and knob on those machines represent something for a reason. Not just so we can look busy to the patient while we are taking pictures. The purpose behind my comment was to reinforce that the SPI is a requirement if you want to become registered and isn't something that should taken lightly, in spite of how ridiculous some people may feel it is. Again, in life there will be things that we want to do and things we must do. Taking this exam is a must if you want to retain employment these days.

As I mentioned before, I too have come across sonographers who didn't know their anatomy, which is RIDICULOUS and these people are performing exams when they need to go back to school (or find another profession). That is neither here nor there at this point. They have already made it beyond the point where the people on this forum are trying to get to. Like you said, these fly by night schools may be part of the problem because the students aren't learning as much as those students who attend accredited school. Fortunately some of the students turn out to be really good scanners, but scanning isn't that difficult. Like anything else, if you practice enough, you will improve. Knowing anatomy AND how to utilize the tools provided by the machines is oftentimes more important than getting that textbook picture which most patients do not have. Understanding physics is what will allow us to perfect our images to as close to textbook as possible. Notice I said understanding, not memorizing

I'm getting what you guys are saying. Of course you need to know how to operate the machine. However, the basis of this whole discussion is that there are people wanting cheat sheets....um good luck that!! LOL!!! AS IF???? I don't care what anyone says, these exams are a racket. It's all about some agency making more money. I had to go back and pass the SPI and other exams just like any other working sonographer, because I HAD TO.... but I know people who have been working FOR YEARS (like over 15) who are excellent techs who are being required to go back and take these tests and are having trouble passing because they've been out of school for so long. SO, you're telling me that by passing tests they're going to be better techs?? Come on! Some of these guys need to be grandfathered in. New techs...ok...but after years and years....REALLY?????
