I am ARDMS certified, but was trained on the job, so all I know is abdominal and small parts ultrasound. I'd love to do travel work but I'm worried once I get into it that I won't get a job consistently every 13 weeks because hospitals/clinics will need people who do ob/gyn and vascular or echo.

Does anyone have insight on this??

And any ideas on how to learn ob/gyn or vascular. I've thought about going back to school to get the clinical hours and become educated on how to do ob/gyn and vascular so I could sit for the boards, but the time and money play a large factor.

Any help, ideas, insight would be Greatly appreciated!!

HI, I live in Oak Forest about 1/2 hour away from chicago. I am very intrested in obstetric and gynecologic sonography. I am 17 with a baby I graduated High School in 3 years. And I am looking to pursue a career. I've called many hospitals & schools in my area and they all say they either dont train or have programs. It's been a very hard search. So if I find information I'll gladly pass is on hope you will to.

I would definatly go to school.. And make sure it's accredited!!
These are programs I know of.. and there are not many in the Chicagoland area, but as well as train you these programs offer you the clinical portion also.
And below each, I've pastes a web address

++Northwestern Memorial Hospital www.nmh.org/nmh/forhealthcareprofessionals/about.htm

++I know Rush does too, but this is specifically for Vascular US.

++Triton has a in which you'll learn ob/gyn, abd, vascular
www.triton.edu/cgi-bin/r.cgi/department_detail.html?SESSION=poH7Org9oc&ContentID=890

++Dupage Community college has a general sonography and a vascular program; www.cod.edu/Academic/occVocEd/med_imaging/index.htm

++Southern Illinois University in Carbondale offers a B.S. in radiologic science, where you will learn Xray and US, but it is 5 hours away.

Good Luck!! Feel free to email if you have any other ?'s. I will do my best to help.

On NWM website it doesn't give any prereqs except a physical exam..

For Rush, I didn't realize this, but you will get a B.S. in Vascular US.

Triton: One year of high school algebra, biology, chemistry and physics, or college equivalents within the last five years with grades of "C" or better (MAT 055, BIS 101 or BIS 103, CHM 110 or CHM 140). AHL 115 may be used as a prerequisite to physics.

Not sure about dupage. SIUC is a college, so you'll recieve a Bachelor's degree in Radiolgic Sciences.. You will also be trained in XRAY as part of the program. (at least that's how it was 5 years ago, not sure if anythings changed)

All the websites have the info and numbers of the schools.. They will be able to answer your ?'s better than I can. Hope this helps

I traveled for 3 years doing 13 wks, I was in 9 states, OB IS A BIG THING , and Vascular is a must , if you consider to travel. You could call different agenicies , you did not learn OB in school?. Reread and on job trained. it is very stressfull when you travel. You get all the worst cases, alot of OB, and Vascular you must know.

Donna, I have been looking into traveling tech as a RVT. It sounds like you did not like it. Would you recommend it for any reasons? Where you able to stay in full time work with traveling? Any benefits?

Yes I am applying to go to ultrasound school and you absolutely need to go to college. Most programs require you to have an RN or be a rad tech, there arnt any schools that dont require either an associates degree or a bachelors degree. I am applying to northerwestern and you need a bachelors and a list of prerequisites, so its a complicated process. Harper college is probably your best bet. It has an associates program, you may need to take some gen eds, but thats about it. Hope this was helpful!

Not sure about the other schools, but Triton has an associate degree program; no previous bachelor's degree or any other kind of degree is required to enter the program. All you need are the pre reqs.

DO NOT GO TO COLLEGE OF DUPAGE ULTRASOUND!! HORRIBLE INSTRUCTOR-PROGRAM DIRECTOR IS CRAZY AND A LIAR. NO ONE IN THE LAST TWO GRADUATING CLASSES HAS BEEN ABLE TO FIND JOBS EITHER. BAD REPUTATION. POOR CLINICAL SITES AND HAVE TO DRIVE VERY FAR TO REACH THEM. DID NOT PREPARE FOR THE REAL EXPECTATIONS OF THIS JOB.

What's wrong with the College of DuPage's Ultrasound program?? I've been thinking to go back on for their Vascular Program (it's an advanced certificate, need to be ARDMS first).

I have been traveling for 3 years now and to be totally honest with you, If you have a permanent full-time position: "Stick with it!" THE TRAVEL FIELD IS FLOODED! I am registered in Abdomen and OB/Gyn and I am able to do Vascular exams. Also, I don't know what it is with some of the sites I have been sent to, but for whatever BOGUS reason they want to give your recruiter, they can and will axe your ass at YOUR expense! So....Think twice!

I live close to Harper College and was interested in the sonography program there but found out it is very difficult to get into. Unfortunately before I wasn't serious about school and now suffer from a very low GPA. I have my associates and want to do sonography or nursing. Which schools are least competitive and in chicagoland area where I can acheive a bsn or bachelors in sonography? Took til i was 24 to decide what i want to do! Any advice is appreciated... Thanks.

doesnt hurt to get on the waitlist, You can decide in 5 years when your up for your spot. uggg. They always told me 2 years, then its been 2 years and they say oh we just admitted people from 2005/ 2006 waitlist. I figure I got two years to go now. They pick Aug 2011 class in Oct and by Dec you can see who's in and where you are with others opting off the waitlist.

What was the instructor's name? What did he or she lie about? Is it a two year course?

Before you sign up for any "Pay school" find out where you will get your clinical training. if it's not in a hospital setting, do not waist your money. I trained at LAC/USC medical center for one year, the busiest hospital in the country and I still felt I was not prepared for the real world. So just imagine training for 6 months in a clinic somewhere........You have to deal with combative patients, patients near death, patients on vents, morbidly obese, combative patients on a vent to be able to handle the real patients........patients who walk in to your exam room are not real patients. patients who are wheeled into your room are real patients.
Don't be fooled by what they tell you at the school.......they want students, but they want your money even more$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ remember that! I turn techs down everyday, looking for work, looking for a break.
i am way too busy to be able to give them the 6 additional months they need just to get up to speed. not to be good techs, just fair.......Just fair enough to not get into major trouble and miss something. Wait to get into a real school with great clinical sites, that make you train for at least one year...........I say this after 30 years of scanning, 25 of which i have been a supervisor at the same facility, I have seen a lot come and go..........
