Hi,
Need to know...
If I graduated from a DMS program and pass the SPI exam will I then be considered to be RDMS through ARDMS - even though I can't take the specialty exams such as abdominal or vascular after I put in 1600 hours?

No, you will definitely need to pass the second exam to receive the credential from ARDMS. Once you pass the SPI, you have three years to take the specialty exam. If you graduated from a non-CAAHEP accredited program you will need at least one year of fulltime clinical experience to sit for the specialty exam.

CCI requires the same - they do not have DMS credentials but vascular and cardiac credentialing. But, if you graduated from a non-CAAHEP accredited program you will need to show 800 hours of clinical experience to sit for their specialty exams.

Thanks, but most place will not hire you unless you are registered through ARDMS!! After I pass the SPI exam I will be registered through ARDMS , but just not with the title of RDMS yet, Correct? Not all places specify that you must be a RDMS, just registered through ARDMS.

That is correct. You will not be credentialed until you take that second exam. You will be halfway there though.

On a side note, there is no difference between being credentialed by CCI or ARDMS. Obviously people that hire can have a preference but honestly as long as you are credentialed you met their credentialing requirements (for medicare/insurance payments and lab accreditation.)

It is so important to graduate from a CAAHEP accredited ultrasound program (if at all possible.) It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a job without a credential (unless you know someone.)

You are so right - but something has to change in this field, either with the insurance companies, or the schools being accredited. Since most insurance Co's will not pay for the procedure unless the tech is certified and registered, Places won't hire you, but then also there are only few schools that will certify you at the end of their program!! It seems that most of us new graduates are in the same boat - but just some luckier than others to have had someone willing to take them on without them being registered yet. Someone needs to give the rest of us a break!! Know of anywhere in Illinois where I can get my 1600 hours in??

Pegasus Lectures sells their OB/GYN seminar workbook (standalone.) It is the same book that the seminar attendees receive. It is $84.95 and is over 400 pages in length - way more comprehensive than the ESP workbook.

Let me get this straight so I'm understanding you properly; you passed the SPI and you are wondering now if you are a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS)? The answer is no. In order to be an RDMS through the ARDMS, you need to pass the SPI, AND also pass a Registry Board (preferably Abdomen or OB).

Just read the Textbook of Diagnostic Ultrasonography: 2-Volume Set by Sandra L. Hagen-Ansert and go through the SDMS review book for abdomen. That should be more than enough to pass the exam. Concentrate on the liver, kidneys, GB , pancreas and abdomen vascular. Pretty much 85-90% of the exam are from these content. The abdomen was easier than the OB/GYN exam.

Ok I guess ascites may relate to cardiac abnormalities or heart failure cuz ascites is caused by high pressure in the portal system.

Ascites reflects right heart failure usually the systemic circulation backs up from the right atrium back out the ivc svc and coronary sinus and causes leg edema and ascites left side failure causes pulmonAry edema from pulmonary veins backing up
