How long does it take to finish Ultrasound tech school? How do I get started?

I have been looking into going to school to be a Ultrasound tech and I was wondering how long does it take from start to finish, and does anyone know of any schools in Utah that would be good?

If I have an AA degree, wouldn't I just need to take a few classes to fill for the AS degree and then do my DMS?

My husband was looking into PCCTI. The did not have prerequisites and now you have to have a bachelor's degree. My husband is looking for somewhere else to go that does not have prerequisites. OCC has a great program. you will need your associates then an extra 11 credits. full time it will take you 2 years. you can enroll and take a night class per semester now to get a head start. i think you can take a class and get high school credit too. make an appointment with a counselor at occ ASAP!! you can also check it out on their website. take this advice from a 37 year old wife and mother having to go back to school because my Associates of liberal arts is making me no $$. if you work at a doctors office hours are normal m-f. hospitals vary.

Thank you so much for your information. I have met with my counselor a couple times this past week and we decided to enroll me at OTC which is a program through my highschool. the program is called the Health/Med Tech program, it will help me prepare and concentrate on things i will have to know and so to be an ultraound tech. there i can earn credits that are good for OCC so i will be walking in with a head start. I am very excited because i want to stay home for college because i have to pay for it and it going to be alot cheeper! im hoping to work in a doctors office also. I've read that the demand for ultrasound tech's are on the rise and will continue. if you have an information or questions for me please write back =]

Liz, check this site. www. caahep.org for schools in your area. I think there's a school in Nashville, Gallatin, a couple in Memphis, and so on.
There's a school here in MS a few hours away from Nashville also.

Well this site appears to be down right now.
But I know Vol State CC has one,one in Nashville, Vanderbilt has one but who knows what all you have to do to get in there program.
Methodist hospital in Memphis has a program, deadline March 15th.
Baptist in Memphis has one, baccaulaurate program though.

Ashley since you're in Mobile, you should really check out IUD there. I think their deadline is sometime this summer.
It's an accredited program. There's two more programs in AL, and there's a school (not CAAHEP accredited but is through some other organization) in Pensacola. It's more expensive, however.

Hi, I would like to become an ultrasound technician but only college near by has a non- accredeted program (because it is so new). What are the minuses and dangers to watch out (not attending in an accredeted program)?

PCCTI has now changed their pre-requisites according to requirements that have been altered by the credentialing bodies. You can now qualify for the program without a Bachelors degree (or an Associates).

I am an adult who would like to become an ultrasonographer. With many years of experience in the work force (and no time to waste) I am looking for an associate degree program (or certificate program) that has no previous medical experience, prior medical tech degree, or bachelors prerequisites! I am willing to re-take any required prerequsite courses such as anatomy and physiology, physics, etc. to enter the program but don't want to first get a degree as a radiologist. Is there any school anywhere in the United States that offers an accredited program that would accept me?

If you have a college degree, or 2-years allied health background check for any of the schools at the website lost referred you to. Also look at online programs. My choice was Institute of Medical Ultrasound in Atlanta. I will take their classes online in the evenning, and my clinical rotations will be here in Macon.

See what is local, if not look at whether IMU works for you.

Have you looked into Jackson CC? They have a program at the school as well as an online program that is accredited. With their online program, you won't have to move if you're accepted.
You may have to get your pre-reqs out of the way first.

IMU would not be an option unless you have your college degree, or 2-years Allied health training.

I was signed up with PCCTI only to find out they are not an accredited school. Meaning they are not ARDMS certified, most hospitals want ARDMS certified people. I had word with them and they finally fessed up and said they in fact were not certified. I have done extensive research on this school, if you want to call them that, and the only school were I live that an ARDMS certified program is Triton in River Grove, IL. They are said to be one of the best. But, another bad thing I heard about PCCTI is that hospitals will not just let you do your clinicals because they are affiliated with other reputable schools who already have these hospitals as there clinical sites. So, for those who go through a place like PCCTI they are basically screwed out of a lot of money. You are better off going through a regular school and not a quicky course.

Stay away from PCCTI....They are not accredited by ARDMS. Any good program will definitely have prereq's. FIRST THEY TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO SIT FOR YOUR ARMDS ONCE YOU COMPLETE THE PROGRAM AND IT WAS A LIE. THEY THEN ALSO SAID THAT THEY WERE CAAHEP ACCREDITED, WHICH WAS ANOTHER LIE. THEY ALSO REQUIRE STUDENTS TO COMPLETE A 7 MINUTE SCANNING TEST WHICH IS CRAZY.. I GRADUATED IN JANUARY OF 07 AND MY CLASSMATES R STILL IN SCHOOL TRYING TO FINISH THIS 7 MINUTE TEST. ALSO IT IS VERY HARD TO FIND A JOB. IF YOU DO DECIDE ON GOING FOR ULTRASOUND I WOULD RECOMMEND MUHLENBERG OR SANFORD BROWN.

I am looking for a change in career to the ultrasound field too and I was wondering if you have to have a medical background to succeed in this field? I am looking at 2 scools the first says I have to get my medical assisting (allied health) done perfore I can get into the ultrasound program. The other school says that as long as I take the pre-reqs (anatamy, physics etc.) I am fine and don't need a specific medical background. I want to make an informed decision. Any ultrasound techs out there that can give me advice?
