pencil in Kansas City, Missouri said: I was interested in this as well. what i have found out was that the best thing to do is to get into radiology. there are good schools around the area such as Colorado tech institute or Avala university. ask these schools to see if this would help you become a sonographer. my brother is attending to become a radiologist and he said they are close to the same thing. as far as a sonography degree i dont believe they have any in kansas city. good luck i believe st lukes hospital in KC has a sonography program. i looked at the requirements and it says you need to be an RT before you can get into the program. |

I'm also interested in a career as an Ultrasound Technician. I have a full time job managing my family's Physical Therapy practice and I have 3 children so I'm looking for an online school. I have never attended college so I'm not sure what general classes I should take. Also, what online school (accredited) is the best for this career? Any information at ALL would be helpful! dgdakelly@yahoo.com |

Lol. You guys are funny. Getting a job in Ultrasound is even harder than non-health care fields. Your best bet at getting a job is actually working for a college taking money from foolish students or a job for the government. |

Why would you tell someone not to go to school. I disagree you everyone should continue their education towards their degree. The world will not be like this forever. Don't be fooled by media etc. The world is going through changes but that doesn't mean anyone should stop going to school. I'm working and going to Ultrasound School and in two years things will change. We've been through this before in our economy maybe not to this extreme but close to it. Good Luck and go to school. |

xocynxo in memphis, Tennessee said: hi just wanted to say i was told by southwest that they didnt have a sonograpy program...i really wanted to go there for sonography cause i dont have any medical classes only a bs in business and cant get into methodist or baptist without medical experience...i am already 44 so dont have time to do a 4 yr...if i was told wrong could u please enlighten me...would so love a 2 yr sonography program without leaving memphis... I am a student at Southwest Tn Community College. I'm finishing some prerequisites for the radiology program, and I was wanting sonography too, but what I've decided to do is get my associates degree at Southwest in Radiology (which will allow you to take your boards to become an x-ray tech.) and then go to Methodist for their 15 month sonography program. They only accept people who have graduated from an AMA-accredited program. This will end up taking me about 3 and half years, but it will hopefully be worth it. Good Luck! |

Hello, I live in New York and am interested in becoming an ultra sound technician. I was told that because I already have a BS in Accounting, there is no financial help available. I'm unemployed right now, so how does that work in terms of the unemployment insurance taking care of the payments? also, are there any accredited schools in NYC to get a certificate/diploma within 1 year? |

I got on 3/98 and start 8/12. Then another two years in the actual program. Quite a bit! |

I want to get my degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and I am having trouble in finding a school. I only have about 15 college credits and I want an associates degree. Iknow that Trition College has a program, but are there any other schools out there that I can go to. I looked at Northwester Memorial Hospital in Chicago and they say that have a program but do you already need a degree to enroll? Please someone help. You can also email me at nicole_3602@yahoo.com |

There are 7 schools in IL. www.caahep.org/Find-An-Accredited-Program/ You just gotta look at each one and decide which one to pursue, or go after them all. The hospital based one looks like they have a few options. You can get a BA, to get in you can either have a 2 year allied health degree, or do these classes: Prerequisite Courses
Anatomy and Physiology - 2 semesters required (8 semester hours preferred)
Youd have to call them to see what they usually accept. I would think applicants with the allied health degrees would get in first. I would look at all the IL schools and figure out how what classes qualify for each school so when you are near done you can apply at them all. |

I posted a lot on the same subject on the first page of this post: I'm not going to type everything I said there all over again. I will say this right now though. Go to www.caahep.org and click "find and accredited program" at the top. Select Diagnostic medical sonography and your state. I would ONLY go to a school that the sonography program is specifically accredited. Lots of schools say they are accredited, but the sonography program specifically is NOT. Lots of horror stories of people on these forums wasting their money. Also, you can go to ARDMS.org and clicks "prerequisites" on the right and then select "RDMS, RDCS, RVT prerequisites." That will tell you the educational pathways that allow you to take the registry exams. Statistically accredited programs have better pass rates and get more job placement. What many people above have said about the job market being slow is also very true in many areas. Economy is down and people lose their insurance so they don't go to the hospital if they don't absolutely have to. So hospitals to save money have cut staff, cut hours, cut benefits, all while pushing fewer employees to cover more work. A hospital needs a lot of nurses, but many only employ 4 to 9 sonographers. My point being that finding a job follows that pattern. Those that take pride in their work and are good at it usually do fine, but even then I know some that got let go. Those that aren't so good tend to bounce around different jobs because they're not worth holding on to. Lots of those also often wash out. |

I am an attorney representing a lot of students who went to for-profit vocational schools for Medical Assisting, Ultrasound (sonography), and similar fields. Former students call me from all over the country. Problems misleading prospective students about being "accredited" (CAAHEP or some meaningless career school national accreditation), the percentage of graduates that get jobs (real, full time jobs in the intended field, or working as file clerk at an ultrasound clinic, and the value of going to the school (do you really need to pay $18,000 for a medical billing course???) is a national problem. My advice is to look carefully at the OUTCOMES of the programs before you enroll! They should disclose to you for the past academic year: a) the percentage of people who enrolled and actually graduated b) the percentage of people who enrolled and got real, permanent full-time jobs in the intended field for which the students enrolled c) the average salary of those graduates placed in those "real jobs." Ask the employers you would love to work for about the program - do they hire their graduates, and do those graduates do well at the employer? Jeffrey Antonelli

Brittany in Austin, Texas said: Hi I just got accepted into Baptist Memorial College of Health Sciences, and I'm starting the DMS program this fall. It's a four year program (they are very picky on what will transfer from other schools) but some people got it knocked down to three because of transfer credit. The first two years consist of general studies, like english and A&P, and the last two years are clinicals. Tuition for me, taking 13 hours with a lab included is close to $4,000 a semester. They do offer loans and financial assistance, and if you are accepted, you CAN get your last two years of clinicals paid for by Baptist Hospital if you agree to work for them for two years when you graduate. Job placement is very good, too. But mind you, they only take applicants for fall classes, and in my graduating class, there are only 13 girls. It's very limited and very competitive. But, worth it IMO. You CAN make up to $70,000 in this field, eventually. Hello Brittany, have you graduated from Baptist Sonography program yet? |

Cassy, youll want to find an accredited program here: www.caahep.org/Find-An-Accredited-Program/ go to the local schools websites and pick a school. Do what they require and get on any waiting list you can as fast as you can. My school had a few requirements to get on the wait, then while you waited you could finish other required classes. Its diff now, all classes must be done, then you get on the waitlist. They are all diff. Cal is pretty bad and thats why we moved to NC. Good luck take your time youll get there. |
