I am applying to be a vet assistant (not a licensed tech) at a new vet clinic that has not opened yet. They have posted the job listing and this is where I have a problem.

The owner is someone I know and seems interested in hiring me despite the fact that I have no experience. However, the job ad states that they are looking for experienced vet assistants. They're also looking for experienced techs and receptionists.

My thought has been that it would be silly to hire someone at a new clinic if they have no experience because they would require on-the-job training. I doubt a new clinic has time for that since things may be "bumpy" at first.

I'm wondering what my chances are of getting this job since I have no experience, even though I know the owner and they seem interested. I'm wondering if I should ask them before the interview process begins if I even have a chance since I have no experience. Maybe they're just dragging me along just to be polite and proper.

Thoughts?
