"What are the top 3 traits or skills every video editor must have to excel?"

1. Excellent sense of pace and timing.
2. Ability to visualize the written word and express it in pictures and sound to achieve the producer's or director's vision.
3. Ability to work well with others in a collaborative environment

A.while being able to calmly and rationally explain your creative decisions and
B.while being able to handle criticism.

Anything else you can bring to a project as far as your skill set goes is a plus, but not necessary if you have at least these three basics.

1. Have a sound working knowledge of your HARDWARE...
2. Speed in delivering your cut &/or revisions...
3. Foresight to recognize costly pitfalls far BEFORE they happen...

Then loudly shout NO WE WON'T JUST FIX IT IN POST!

I second this. This embodies video editing. Color correctors and sound design are separate jobs, no similar than director and cinematographer.

Is it necessary to have a degree?! I am 18 and just leaving school and am being told i should go to uni for a career in media/visual media/ video editing. I am confused on what advice to take.... I am already familiar with final cut and after effects and can make decent level videos... Or is experience better?

Thanks
Bill : )

For me, there must be three talents for a video editor. They are:

1.Video Editing in mind before shooting.

2. Having an eye for what goes with the story you are trying to tell, and getting rid of all the unrelated footage, or footage that distracts from your message.

3. Patience : He must be spending a lot of time at the computer. So, h emust have patience for the final build up

There are some other properties like, Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.

I think all of these are enough of a professional Video Editor. Visit this people(www.authorstream.com/videocaddy/), they will have all the required skills, I have personally know them and they is just amazing.
