I will be taking a HUGE paycut...working as a Medical Assistant. I wasted $10,000 on my license. AND...not all xray schools are accredited..so your credits probly won't even transfer. That's nice. (sarcasm)

I was a military trained radiology tech, after droping out of hight school and gettina a GED.
The Air Force program is fully accredited, I served fout years. Saw three countries. I got out
got the first job I interviewed for partly because I was a vet, a seargent in the Air Force and this to my employer showed I hadd leadership skills and delt could handle responsibility. It was a great a great positive on a resume and is on every emplyemnt application.
I have never been out of a job sence joining.
Oh Did I mention I had no student lones, a ARRT certificate, ahd $10,000 saved in the bank.

THIS is what I agree with 100%. I am over the age limit for joining the military...but I think it's a great avenue for growth and personal achievment. My brother went through the navy and got his RT. NOW he heads up the rad therapy unit at his hospital. Limited scope is NOT the best way to go...

I have empathy for you. It is bad! Why did you choose your school and career choice? Were you lied to? What kind research did you do before you chose limited Radiology Tech?

what information would you give to help other people to not make the same mistakes? Best of luck to you!

Wow!!. This is interesting hearing all of this!! I spent 11 years in the Navy. I got out a year ago. While I was in, I became a psych tech. For the last 6 years, I tried to change my NEC/MOS to become an X-ray tech because I had an interest in that. I wasn't afforded that opportunity because the 1st time I tried, the school was closed for new enrollees. The next time I couldn't get out of being a psych technician because it was considered undermanned. I'm very close to completing my Bachelors degree. I'm saying this to tell those to have no regrets!!. Currently, I am an NCT(of 4mos- I went there to make myself more marketable). I guess I didn't do enough research because I thought an LMRT was the same thing, just varied state-by-state...just like the difference between an L.V.N and an L.P.N. After hearing this info about a bill, etc. It makes me question going to 2 year school. The concern with that is the programs are usually avg 8-5 ,M-F, which my concern would be money,bills.. I would probably only be able to pull a part-time job and at least the advantage would be I'd already be working in the field, which would be easier for externship. The average pay that I've seen here in Dallas for and NCT/Medical Assistant has ranged from $11-17.. $11 for some chiropractors and urgent care offices/$15 or more 4 some orthopedic offices... If I am wrong, then please correct me..if anyone knows of places that pay higher...plz let me know... These rates vary according to experience and other skills you may have, with higher pay with experience. My goal is to make in the upper $20's/$30, so I have to raise my standard and get more education. So I guess the moral of the story is do thorough research, weigh the pros and cons and determine short and long term goals, determine what works for you.

In Az you can get your RT in just 2 yrs...it's worth it.

Here is the website to transfer lic. to Texas check it out if you have questions send me an email

This is the Texas Dept. Of State Health Services, Radiation Control Program

Texas recognizes ARRT certified radiologic technologists. The state also grants Limited x-ray licensure
to students who have completed a state approved 8month or more course.

If not in Texas go to this website and it will give you the information on requirements in your

j in Paramus, New Jersey said: sorry but it's just another program to make more money and saturate the field. I am sorry to say LPN is no way compared to a limited x ray program. At least LPNs have jobs but limtied x ray techs may not even after graduation. You may spend more money while going to a limited x ray school than just going straight for the 2 year program. I just disagree.

I respect your opinion but I disagree,in my profession as a Admissions Advisor at a Allied Technical School it is my job to research the programs we are
promoting. Once again if you go to the Texas Legislator website I posted you will read that Limited Medical Radiologist are soon to be in every state.
It will be a requirement for all who do Radiographs in the Nation will need to attend a 8 months or longer course in order to do these procedures.Once bill
HB 3414 passes that will make it a requirement and those who are current LMRTS will automatically be grandfathered in to this requirement.

That means None Certified Techs will no longer be allowed to do radiographs "in the nation" and will have to go back to school to further their education
or will lose their job.

I feel LMRTS get a bad review due to the fact people really are not educated enough on this career field.I know many successful LMRTS who make a great
salary and enjoy their career. Of course like any other career you want to earn more credentials to grow. We do promote and motivate our graduates to
continue their education and get a degree in radiology. The obstacles they run into here in Austin and the surrounding areas is the wait to get in to
a degree program. Austin Community College for example has a 2 year waiting period just to get started in the Radiology program they choose 30 applicants
out of 200 plus students and out of those 30 students an avarage of 10-15 actually graduate. It's like that for all degree programs offered in the Medical field
here in Austin.

One of the best guides for preparing for the exam is Appleton&Lange's Review for the Radiography
Examination. The guide comes with a practice exam cd and has over 1200 Exam-type questions and
answers with detailed explanations and page references. New information on venipuncture, updates
on AIDS,HIV, hepatitis, and Universal Precautions. With 50% more radiographs and illustrations.

It should run about $30.00 dollars, you might find a used copy on Amazon.com but make sure the cd
is in it before the purchase.

I suggest just studying the questions that pertain to diagnostics, so skip the question that are
for portable x-rays, v-puncture, fluoroscopy etc....

If you go to the ARRT website arrt.org/ then on the side bar click on State Licensing
click on Limited Scope Exam you will see what the requirements are for the exam and you can
download a packet that shows what is distributed in the exam.

Hi Sobia
For the Limited Scope Radiology Exam there are two options, we have a scheduled class or have the study guide and course materials mailed to you and study from home. First, we have an examination preparation course that meets normally on Friday or Saturday, its a one day intensive class. We offer this course in many different states, please contact us for a location near you. The course time is from 9am-3:30pm but we usually stay later to make sure all questions are answered.

We are an exam preparation course, what we provide is course material containing 15-20 practice exams, we test you, go over it, and keep retesting you, I review your mistakes and find what your weaknesses are. We give you a study guide that follows the ARRT Content Specifications exactly with notes and reference materials from other sources for you to study to get a better understanding of the material. We use assessment testing to red flag areas that need more attention, provide tailor made study materials to help you improve in those areas, and offer email assistance if further information is needed after the course has ended. Taking these practice tests really help because the state exam is hard, make no mistake about it, the questions can be tricky and you need to know what their looking for. You have to know how to answer the questions as much as you need to know the material you studied.
The second option is for those who can not attend the class we can send the course material to you by mail. We also have a study guide that includes 16 mock/practice exams, reference material to better understand the physics from grids to the x-ray tube components to anatomy and positioning. Again we use assessment testing to red flag areas that need more attention.
If you would like more information please visit our website www.courseproviders.net

Hommy RT R in Washington you are a dangerous individual. Spouting how the great the Army is and how it will pay for college. If anyone would like to take advantage of your idea they would be putting their lives on the line everyday for up to 6 years, in the reserves, for a GI bill that has many flaws. Deployment to Iraq would be a given and with enlistment down being deployed more than once is a very real possibility. Your arriving back in the USA safely is not. You may come home, but could be permanently injured, physically and/or mentally. I see no reason to degrade anyone who is trying to better themselves. If getting a Limited X-Ray License improves someones job opportunities and their ability to earn a better income for their family how can you consider it a waste of money. No one has said they could not continue on later to achieve an RT license. They can be working sooner, making more money now and maybe saving for future college classes. I have a LMRT and do not feel I wasted my money. From your sarcastic remarks on this site you seem like a bitter RT that can not find a job. I think if you were employed you would not have all this free time to post constantly on this site or are you a recruiter for the Army?

Well, the reason I recommended this Review book is because unfortunately there is no study guide
for LMRTS but as you know since you have the Appleton&Lange's Review it is pretty good.It will
prepare the test taker to learn how to test on multiple multiple choice questions. Of course
skipping all the areas that they are not going to test on. Many of our students utilize this
review book and pass their exam on the first try.

I still put the ARRT website up to make sure to review the LMRT practice exam, which will also
help them prepare for the exam. If you could give some insite on what to cover in the Appleton&
Lange's review to help others who are prepare for this exam. I'm sure they would appreciate the
help.

We also have Diane Wood, R.T. (R)(BD)ARRT/Course Providers who has beening posting and has helpful
information on prepare for this exam.

Thanks,

Well,

While you think you I'm being a jerk. I want you to ask an RT who is not a clinical coordinator if they think that LMRT is good for our field?
For you you have to go to school for LMRT then you have to go to school again to become an RT. So by the time your an RT you would have enough
credits to have a BS degree. With probably 50K to 60K of educational debt. For our field it drives our wages down and it takes away jobs.
So if your going to put all of that effort into learning a job your so passionate about don't you think you should go for the gusto. That is the
problem everybody wants the quick easy way to make money. If you have a passion for radiology you would pursue your education without regaurds
to taking the shortcut. I love radiology and I will probably go to medical school to become an oncologist, however, I've done everything that I posted.
It's really sad the comments you posted about X-Ray TECHS IN THE MILITARY. I'm also in the reserves, I've only known of one X-ray tech who died in Iraq..
while there are proabably more than just the one that I know of our job is so important in Iraq. We X-ray every soldier who is on the battlefield in a
two hour period we would x-ray 70 soldiers....remeber that bomb that exploded in the cafeteria...there were over 100 people who died...I knew two of
the soldiers who died...however they need x-rays they need to be diagnosed. So me telling someone to get their education through the military, is going
to be a better tech than the average person...taking 70 patients and completing all of their exams in 3 hours is what the ARRT is all about...
we strive for imaging excellence...I can to a full skeletal survey in 18 minutes with no repeats...this is because of my training in the military...FYI
I work as a civilian at Madigan Hospital and I work on call at a Trauma Hospital and I'm going to school in September for nuclear medicine... I have the
right to speak as I do!

Get over yourself. (ALL of you drama addicts.)

3 cheers to everyone trying to improve themselves and further their education.
The military is great and an honorable choice.
A specific, accredited training course is also great.
Baby steps or full steps, do what your resources, finances and time will allow you to do NOW; go further later if you can.
But whether military, college, or abbreviated skills courses..........do your homework.
Contact your state health department, go to the ARRT website, and contact your local college deans/counselors instead of a
discussion thread full of nothing more than inflated opinions.

GET THE FACTS................which you obviously won't find here.

The LMRT I know didn't have to take college algebra, anatomy and phisiology, english, etc. They ate chips and dip
and watched movies at school. As a student working my a** off in an accredited school to become a Registered Technologist,
I just don't think LMRT's are qualified. I would not want an LMRT to expose me or anyone I care about to ionizing radiation.
Its a joke. Go for the real thing. By the way, she can't find a job.

Everyone does have an opinion and I can respect everyone's opinion. I think there's alot of
great advice in this forum for people looking into this career field.

There's failure and success that's what disguises people who have gotten a creditial
and actually put it to use. It's up to the them to really put forth the effort to get what
they want.

Get the facts about LMRT and RT find out which best suits you and what your looking then do it.
Everyone has different wants and needs and I think these two careers have different requirements.
When you find out what they are weigh your options and see what procedures your willingly to do and not do.

I am having a horrible experience as a LMRT. I get paid about $3-$4 less than my co-workers who are RT's. Guess who is training them...ME! Guess who does the same job as they do...ME! I have been employed in my current position for 2 years, making $16/hour. I am constantly watching new employees get hired, making a lot more money than me. So my advice to anyone thinking of becoming a LMRT, DON"T! If I knew then what I know now I would have gone to school to become a RT. I am actually considering starting over and getting my RT.

For the xray tech. program you have will have to test on March and if yuo pass the test, wich is very easy you get and interview base on that you get choosen for the program. Is a full time program with Fridays off and after October we will be gong to clinicals until August of next year 2009. You may want to check out the program.

I think is a great idea to go to the military not only to pay your debt, but also you are getting a trainning,

I think tha when you are ready to work your history of been train in the military is going to look good on a resume.

If you decided not to go to the military you could always look under public schools or ROP and sometimes they have this kind of program for almost nothing. Here in CA at a public school runs for about $1,000 inlcuding books and tuition.

Market is going to pick up for LMRT and RT's for fact that they will be in for front in diagnosing medical issues. As in preventative disease and disorders that we can see early on before complications set in and the charges sky rocket. So Care bill will inforce prevenative medicine in order to save tax payers and company money. The CARE bill will also get rid off NCT and non lisenced radiographers to set it against law to do imaging with out proper higher learning. LMRT's will gain demand in feild pretty shortly and future pay plus need will increase over time. Nct would not become grandfathered in since they arnt lisenced to deal with radiographic equipment. Plus states with out lisening requirments which are most of them would become federaly outlawed to have non-lisenced workers working around radiologic equipment. So should be substantial increase in demand For LMRT's. LVN can bridge to RN same way LMRT can Bridge over to RT with online course's.

Lmrt is smart for future carreer becuase it is gaining headway through in gaining it's smart approach towards patient care and lowering bills both for doctor and pateint. RTs will play important role as well just as RN (nurse. They will be supervisors, surgical imaging, CT, MRI, CV, and radiologic medical treatments. So LMRT would only do cleanup-basic skills, as in diagnosis imaging only, might do MRI's or CV but in special case's only as in cross trained. LVN's do nurse roll as basic patient care, monitering vitals, injections, cleanup, handing out meds, and charting. LMRT would be classified as in lower field as such as LVN, Doing basic radiographic hump work even cleanup. So the roll of LMRT isnt in law for most states to follow as LVN but its new feild which. LMRT will gain same respect as LVN after CARE bill is passed.

People should not be wasting time and money going into any x-ray/radiography program during these poor job opportunity times for Radiography.
