My situation is a bit different than what I am reading, but I am hoping someone can give me some help or direct me to a forum that can.

I am a young 62 year old female with over 25 years experience in the accounts payable and clerical fields. Due to eliminations at my previous place of employment, I am now looking for another position. I have had to apply for early social security just to try to keep the bills paid. I had an extremely high volume, high stress position at my previous employer, handled the work load with ease and was well compensated. I have excellent references from four of my superiors as well as a strong resume. Due to a severance package, I am not collecting unemployment yet but will be eligible in another two weeks. With the combined social security and unemployment, I will get by temporarily but I need and want to work and get off social security and continue working full time for many more years. The problems I am encountering are:

1. The salary being offered on the jobs on the various posting sites pay less than my combined social security and unemployment and unemployment doesn't last forever.

2. I have had two face to face interviews in two months. One employer just didn't get back to me at all and the other said they thought I wouldn't be able to handle the "stress" of the position. As I just came off the most stressful position I have ever held, I think that statement was made due to my age which an employer can easily figure out. I present myself in a professional, up to date manner with the confidence to learn any position and do it well.

I want to work full time using my abilities to benefit a company that would value my work ethic and compensate me fairly. I feel that my age is playing a huge part in my inability to find employment. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find a job that would appreciate a mature worker and be willing to pay for the experience and maturity I would provide?

I am looking for an accounts payable job. I was an accounts payable coordinator and specialist for over 18 years. I also did many other functions within the accounting field such as creating purchase orders, receiving, AP to general ledger analysis, vendor setup, statement reconcilations, training others on JD Edwards Peoplesoft and trouble shooting, which I really enjoyed. My salary at the time my position was eliminated was approximately $17.50 per hour. However, I understand that salary is not realistic in today's economy. I am looking for something in the $14.50 to $15.00 an hour range. My intention is to get off early social security and unemployment and get back to work full time and I am willing to take that reduction in salary. I started at my previous position at $30,000/yr and five years later was making approximately $36,000/yr. I would be happy to start over again at the $30,000/yr salary.

I have checked out akronworks.com and have seen nothing there that matches up to my skills and salary requirements. I cannot afford to take a position at less than $30,000/yr as that is less than my social security and unemployment. As an added incentive to prospective employers, I have my own medical benefits and will continue to keep what I have.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. If you know of any forums where I can connect with other senior professionals with the same problem, I would appreciate that information also.

You may email me directly at JBernel1@neo.rr.com

Thank you for your response.
