I have worked for giant for almost three years I have been hard working and gone out of my way to help them except for when my husband was in the hospital for heart failure. A week ago two women bought a bunch of gift cards with what managers assume was stolen credit cards. Because of this i have been put on suspension i think. The problem is that they told me Thursday that i would hear back friday. Its now Wednesday of the next week and i dont know if i still have a job. They wont tell me they say they are waiting for the DM but they put me on the roster this week after telling me they were going to pull me. Now im afraid they are going to try to get me for not showing up. they dont give us the option of unions in my area not that i would join one but at this time it would be nice to have some protection from being fired on trumped up charges.

If they put you on the roster you need to go in, if they send you home get written verification that you did show up on time (write down the time), who you spoke with and what was said. Repeat everything which is said to you in your own words so that both of you have a clear understanding of what is being said. Use phrases such as : The way I am understanding this is... , What you are saying is.... and so on. From your post I am assuming that you did not check the credit cards before they were used (do they still post them in a book)? How are they verified these days? It may be possible for you to convince the manager to keep you because once a mistake like this has been made he can be assured that it will never happen again. It's an expensive learning experience for a business to go through, but the chances of you ever doing it again are close to zero. Good luck and keep us posted.

If you are looking at a pharmacy career at Giant/Martins I would advise you to look somewhere else. You will be a scapegoat. You will be lied to. You will receive the lowest salary of all chain competitors. You will receive no support from corporate. You will be expected to provide higher customer service than your competitors who have technology far superior. You will be harassed daily by 'specialists' who don't bother saying 'hello' to you, who expect you to file individual appeals when they aren't fully reimbursed. They give lip service that they are providing excellent customer service while cutting further and further back on help. They only hire part-timers who they can get on the cheap and not have to pay for benefits. The good workers won't look to promote themselves because they know they will be working for hacks who couldn't take the bench work and decided to sell their souls to be yes men for a corporate organization who do little to provide for and encourage their fellow pharmacists. The job of the pharmacy management teams should be to support it's pharmacists and to fight for better technology, more hours, better working environments to free the pharmacists to do his or her job which is providing pharmacy care. Their job is not to sit behind desks on speaker phones barking about negative gross margins. Thank God I am able to find other work.

You have hit the nail on the head! This seems to be the way management thinks at Giant and it does not matter to them what is said or done to the underlings. At Giant the catch phrase should be,"It's my way or the highway".

I just got suspended for letting a minor ring on my number, I'm over 21, and she got fired for abusing her bonus card which she was doing on my number to and that brought me into the mix so now I'm suspended for letting this minor sell alcohol...How likely is it that I'll keep my job?

Then quit. If you work at a grocery store you're going to have to clean up and do other things than bag groceries all day. You do what they need to be done, that's how a job works.

I have worked in my store for a few weeks now but have had many other, way worse jobs before this one. First off, I get great pay for the hours I put in. Second, there's no shortage of hours if I want them which in this economy is great. Third, I applied and had an interview within days of each other, after which I was hired and trained and started the following week. So far, management and staff are like family. I always see my managers store and department bustling around helping, cleaning, and even just saying "Hi". When I arrived, they were taking up a collection for a co-worker who had lost a home. Recently, another co-worker had a loved one die - we sent a card and flowers. We all really look out for one another. I've had one sick day with no problems. Of course, I did the responsible thing and called off a day ahead. The men and women look and act professional on every level. When I am off a few days and return, I feel missed and my co-workers greet me with friendship. This is one of the better jobs I have had. We mostly have happy customers, even with a remodel occurring, and when we have disgruntled customers, we usually try to help as best we can and shrug it off later. In this economy, I am grateful to have this job but even happier that it is a job I can enjoy with people who also seem to enjoy it.

wow, i dont even know where to start, i worked for giant for 2 years in lancaster pa area. ive witnessed many sanitation issues and managers breaking policy and laws, ive found whole human feces in the bakery and the manager on duty never came when i called him about it, instead he sent a bagger to help clean it up. FYI- only store managers are allowed to clean up any body waste so if your a bagger and a manager has you do this let them know they are breaking company policy. also ive seen a manager drop a petite crossant (already bakede)on the floor and pick it up, brush it of with her hand, and package it in order to not have to throw away the whole package. i also worked at a giant bakery that the manager had a skin condition from medication which caused his blood not to clot. iwent to store managers numerous times because he would be bleeding and not wearing gloves while handling food. and just recently i found out a manager in a bakery here is out with mersa (after weeks of hacking and coughing at work) and the store manager thought it best to not even warn co-workers about the possible health risk. DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY DO NOT SHOP AT THIS COMPANY DO NOT INVEST IN THIS COMPANY. GIANT/AHOLD TREAT THEIR WORKERS LIKE 3RD WORLD CITIZENS. i regret going to management. i should have gone to the board of health. management will tell you what you want to hear but do nothing about the problem. if anyone expiriences this please head my advice and make a annonymous complaint to the board of heath because at GIANT YOU CAN GET FIRED FOR HAVING A VOICE.

If you plan on working at giant for longer then 4+ years on the new contract, then dont have your hopes up because they are going to get rid of you around the holidays (2 weeks before thanksgiving) for bonus card fraud, saying that you are using your bonus card on customers. They have done it to numerous ex employees at the store i was and the stores around my area. The union is full of ish. they dont help you and you are paying union dues for people to just sit on their ass. the Corp.is full of bs too. they are all in this scam. They have these managers who dont know anything about management. they just pull them right off the street and throw a purple shirt on them. Oh and please dont be a african american because you will never see a purple shirt ever in the years that you put in there. If you are on the new contract, they will cut your hours if you make to much. i put in 5 years as a cashier and i was making almost $10 an hour, never did i see 25-30 hours like i use to when i was making 7-8 dollars. they are a horrible company to work for dont even waste your time. If you are going to work at a grocery store go to Wegmans. They are way much better. Giants food products arent even real. I use to work in the bakery, EVERYTHING COMES IN FROZEN. If they tell you anything other wise its a LIE. The Bread is brought in not baked. the cakes are frozen they dont have any fresh cakes, donuts, pastry's nothing. Dont waste your time or money. The meat is old people bring it back all the time because it smells bad thats why its markdown because its either out of date or getting ready to go out of date. Im telling you its horrible DONT WASTE YOUR TIME

I've worked at Giant/Martins for 13.5 years & its like 5th grade all over again! My night manager will make up his own rules & then he'll take his problems that are outside of work & take it out on us, especially me, who has more years than he does. He might me salary, but he boo hoo's about child support, & he'll take it out on me 'cause I don't! Sounds like a PERSONAL ISSUE & he should have been MORE RESPONSIBLE! And, if he knows you have something planned AFTER your 8 hour shift, he'll try to "drag-out" the night to slow you down in your own personal life! Plus, i've never seen so much "favortism" since elementary school. If your one of the "pretty" people, they will treat you better than a guy who has more years! Or if your a "sports guy", all you have to do is bring up last nights scores & you get paid to talk! Theres 2 guys who punch in everyday & start reading the morning newspaper RIGHT AFTER they punch in!

diva in Rockville, Maryland said: I have worked for giant for about 8 years now and it is terriable. They hire these young ass kids that don’t wanna work or come to work. The managers are dumb as hell. Don’t work there you will hate it. Trust me !

I am 17 years old and work at a Giant Food Store. I get paid almost 8 dollars an hour and work 12 hours a week. Depending on who needs a shift covered I could have over 20 hours. I've been there since March, I've watched people come and go, but when it comes down to it I can't find another job and even if I absolutely hated it there then I wouldn't quit till I had another one. I get paid enough for what the few things I need each week, and also at the age of 17, 18 in 20 days, I know how to budget money and save it as well. I use coupons for everything. Before people think "oh teenagers don't want to be here" I like all my co-workers and the majority of the customers who come in are very friendly. So shut your mouth about teenagers and my managers are the best ever, it's not that bad, and while your at if your trying to say Giant is TERRIBLE, spell it right if your going to insult the company. You just make yourself look like an idiot.

Giant company Really sucks. They have people working as managers that are not trained and qualified to do there job correctly. At my store when I ask my manager in my department a question he mostly say I dont know. He originally was a cheese specialist who moved up to assistant manager and he has no idea wht to do. We have orders all missed up and alot of the time we are out of the supplies we need everyday due to poor ordering. I believe this company is racist to an extent and something needs to be done about it. I advice no one to work for this company.

Horrible place to work. Managment looks for reasons to terminate associates. Esspecially if you are full-time. Anyone that was a hold over from the former company that Giant (martin's) purchased that has 10+ years of service have a target on them. Know and heard story after story of people with 10, 20, 30 years of service fired, force to retire or busted down. Treat part-times like dogs too. Cut all their hours then call them in on the weekends after cutting hours. Don't work for this company, work for anyone else.

Does anyone like Giant? I worked there for years, and had no problems.
As with any job, you follow rules set up long before you decided to grace the company with your presence!
The rule of employment anywhere: you asked for the job...you, as an
employee, do NOT set the rules of the company, and you keep in mind
that any job is only as good as the worker who handles it! Very few
of us get called by companies to work for them..we SEEK the job.
You asked for the job; live with it, do it well, and stop griping that you're not treated as teahcer's pet!

Reading these post some of the major issue is from the formerof the companies that giant has purchased. People choose to work for those previous companies and as in my case was feed a lot of bull about how giant was going to treat the existing employees. And yes I could quite but sometimes easier said then done especially for middle aged workers.

I worked at a Giant in Pennsylvania for a lil while before I moved on to better things. Working at Giant was a sucky job, but definitely not the worst job I have ever worked. Reading a lot of reviews on here, I must say a lot of people just sound like a bunch of whiners and complainers. Working for these large scale companies you must understand and realize YOU ARE A PAWN. They don't EVER need you, they KNOW you are just as EXPENDABLE as the next sorry a$$ looking for a job, that's why they treat people the way they do. You have to understand these managers make either close to 100K or over 100K a year depending on their position and the higher ups above them make even more. When I worked at Giant, it was ALWAYS a struggle between the blue collar (or should I say green collar) and the white collar. The scheduling was always messed up, the pay wasn't too generous (some individuals were making more money with little to no experience while the long timers were making less) and when they said something about it, guess what? fell on deaf ears. Managers don't care about you or anything else they just see you as a pawn doing work so they can get their pay check. Not only that but the managers are not too friendly with people working there with disabilities. I witnessed a manager verbally destroying a deaf employee, and one day while the deaf employee was working a box fell on him and broke his expensive hearing aid and Giant refused to pay for a new one. (I don't know what the outcome came of this employee as I left before I could find out) but it was ridiculous on how they treat people. When the top managers of say the company would come to inspect they would act like they cared about employees but as soon as they left they were like screw em. Giant along with all these other business chains are pathetic. I feel sorry for people who have no choice but to work for them. Remember, you should always train yourself out of a crappy job.

I work at Giant Food Stores in Pennsylvania, and I have to say I disagree with half the posts in this topic. I'm a service associate (grocery bagging) and yes, I have to do some cleaning work which really isn't that bad. Running a cart around the store scanning hidden bar codes around the store, 99% of the time having nothing to clean up, is really not bad. My superiors are nice, the training I got was good, and I have no problems with any of my co-workers. The best part is, I have a friend who works at a competitor grocery store, and another who works as a cashier in a different competitor store, and I make more than both of them. They both make minimum wage ($7.25 p/hour) and I make $7.60 p/hour. At my store, they're great to their staff. I have to do a bit more then bagging but you know what? It keeps the job interesting. I am the type of person who would rather die then do the same thing day in and day out. Giant keeps me interested and I really have no problems with it.

I'm not sure about your stores, but my store is a great place to work.

Just started working new job as a cashier but going to see on how they work with me. They did very poorly and very underperformance. I am working on my Masters on Adult Education and trying to earn money at Giants. Will stay there for less than a year. If they do not teach me as a Cashier I will make huge write up to the Giants headquarter in Landover, MD. I would hire a lawyer one day. They cannot treat people like hard of hearing or disabilities. They must treat as a teamwork. They suppose to help to teach cashier. Managers and assitant managers do not have time to teach us cashiers and cashiers are not a great instructors to teach newbies. I am an Instructor of American Red Cross for CPR, First Aid and AED for five years. I have lot of experiences in teaching and well known on how to teach proper way to students. I was surprised Giants do not install AED in every Giants Stores. Senseless.

Giant is foreign owned and all you union workers - Where's your Obama now??? - That Hope & Change you voted for has 'Hope' leaving the building, and a little 'Change' jinglin' in your pockets. Divide & Conquer is alive and well and works perfectly when used on fools.

Giant food is the worst place to work the management do'nt care a damn about you. The union takes your money every week and can't even call you back to find out what the problem is . Giant food management is whack.

As far as I know the union states that they must have the schedule up by Wed or Thurs. Keep calling the union and complaining. Get as many of your coworkers to call as well. If you cannot understand your boss than you need to ask him to speak in a manner which you can better understand him. For example, e could speak slower or enunciate better. Good luck
