Summerville is ok, but you get what you pay for Mt. Pleasant is much better. Lot more to do and very close to charleston. The cost of living is higher.

Summerville is much better than Mt. Pleasant. It is in the middle of the road for taxes and less traffic than Mt. Pleasant or Charleston. I have lived here since 1993 and it was much better then but Summerville is growing. Use to we had to go to North Charleston to get things but now if I didn't have to go to North Charleston for work I would stay right here in Summerville and never have to leave.

Charleston is a diverse area which includes 25 separate municipalities.

Both Summerville and mt Pleasant are among the most popular in the Charleston region. I have chosen to live in Mount Pleasant. We enjoy the aesthetics, new facilities and being near the water and downtown.

Mount Pleasant and Summerville are similar in many respects but have their own character. Both are small (Mt P 40,000 people / Sum 60,000 people). Both of these communities tend to attract middle-class professionals yet include a wide range of people.

Because Mount Pleasant is on the coast, and very close to DT Charleston, it is more expensive than Summerville - expect gas, food and general services to cost more in Mt P. Still, even with things more expensive in Mount Pleasant, it is a very attractive area and it is always in strong demand. If you like water activities, shopping, and access to historic Charleston, Mount Pleasant is an excellent choice. Mount Pleasant also features many of the newest parks, hospitals and entertainment venues.

Summerville is a wonderful community as well and has as an advantage of much better pricing. It has a beautiful historic district with well maintained Southern charm. Traveling from Summerville to the beaches will take somewhere between 30 minutes and 40 minutes on a typical day. Getting to downtown Charleston from Summerville takes about the same amount of time as getting to the beaches. Many people move to the Summerville area to take advantage of Dorchester II schools. Even so, most will agree that the schools in Mount Pleasant are excellent - maybe even better.

Bottom line - can't go wrong with either. Best prices => Summerville / best lifestyle => Mt Pleasant.
