What are the seasons like in Charleston? How do Charleston dwellers cope?

Charleston is a delightful place to live and the weather is usually great. People in the area take advantage of the out of doors nearly all year by participating in a variety of sports and recreational activities such as sailing, fishing, golf, beach combing – just to name a few.

High temperatures average in the mid-seventies but can reach the low one hundreds during the summertime. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah The thermostat drops an average of just 20° during the cooler months.

Springtime in Charleston is beautiful. Days are warm and nights are barely chilled. Our flowers are magnificent.

Although hurricanes certainly warrant concern for anyone who lives along the southeastern coast of United States, the frequency of hurricanes as well as their effects tend to be over emphasized by the national media.

In Charleston you do get frequent afternoon and evening thunderstorms during the summertime and you are periodically threatened with hurricanes. Even so, we remain relatively free of many other hazards including wildfires, mud slides, earthquakes (Charleston will experience an earthquake of significance about once every 100 years), tornadoes, flooding, ice and snow. And on most days, the weather is great! The nice weather starts before March and lasts through mid November or early December.

Charleston has a remarkable average of 247 days of sunshine a year and even December, a gloomy month for many areas of the country, averages 22 days of sunshine. Average high temperatures in December are about 62° with average December lows of about 41°. Our warmest month of the year is July with an average daily high of 90° and average daily low of 73°.

Charleston does have more humidity the many areas but most people who live in the Charleston area do not consider it to be excessive. Average rainfall at its peak is in the month of August with about 7 inches of rain.

The flowering season begins early in Charleston with azaleas coming into full-blown in early March. If you’re a fan of beautiful plants and flowers you’ll enjoy the variety and quantity offer in the Charleston area.

If you enjoy going to the beach, almost anytime of the year is perfect. Most of the locals prefer beginning their swimming activities at the beach no earlier than May although for those who visit the Charleston area from cooler climates, many venture into the ocean in March. Most community pools are open and either March or April.

In the wintertime, the weather is so mild that very little winterizing is required. Boat owners tend to keep their boats available for use all year long. Fishing is a great regardless of the month.

Hurricanes are a threat every year but direct hits from hurricanes in the Charleston area are rare. The position of Charleston along the coast reduces the likelihood of a direct hit as most hurricanes either hit Florida or bypass South Carolina to hit North Carolina.

We do have an occasional tornado warning usually in the spring but tornadoes are not very large in comparison to those that you find in Western states and damage from tornadoes is rare.

Most people consider the whether in the Charleston area to be a huge plus when considering a move to this area.
