It comes down to many different factors including timing, skills, contacts that make for a hiring event to occur. It's difficult to just say one particultar thing puts you in the winner's circle. If your area of skills and expertise is in a shrinking field, then it makes it more challenging. You really can only speak from your own personal experience. Giving Up is Never the answer though. Food for thought. |

I'm a recent graduate from UNCW, and I've been looking for work all over western NC and the piedmont area...and I've only gotten 1 'meh' from a place in Hickory. And that "meh" was -"Nice portfolio! If we don't like the person we just hired, you'll be our first interview to replace them." Thanks, now let me find that voodoo doll... How the hell am I supposed to gain "experience" if no one hires me? I've done the internships, I don't want to work at all unless I'm getting paid! I think it's b.s. that I'm supposed to get "experience" and offer my skills in graphic design for free just because I'm a graduate...those loans aren't gonna pay themselves, and how am I supposed to pay them if all companies only want free interns? I'm quitting my second internship which I'm doing now because I was basically told there was no job at the end of this, and now I'm scanning Craigslist, Indeed & anything else for a job to make some money because you need money to get somewhere. I'm a hard-worker, ambitious and dedicated to creating great designs and I think it's stupid that as a graduate I'm expected to have years of unpaid experience before I can have the right to apply to a paying job! |

I have to agree about the education not being appreciated as much as the experience in the south compared to the North. I moved with my husband from NY this year to SC temporarily with my mom until we could relocate to our desired location in Charlotte. He is a teaching graduate with a Master's degree from NY, where the standards are some of the highest in the country. In NC you need a Bachelor's degree to teach. He applied to at least 100 teaching jobs, even teaching asst. jobs, and had 1 interview. I mean is it realistic that someone with a Master's degree isn't even being considered? I feel displaced down here and that we are looked down upon for trying to "take" jobs from locals. Well NY has cut teachers, so what else are we supposed to do?? We moved here because we thought he would have an advantage with a Master's degree and be able to land a job. It seems like they want you to be local before hiring you, so now we are moving to Huntersville in 2 weeks without jobs, just to try to get jobs. Hopefully my husband can even sub there...it's been very difficult. |

I am a Charlotte native with a military background in public relations communications and journalism. A recently separated veteran who is unemployed--the company who hires me will get a $9600 tax deduction as part of the Vow to Hire Heros Act. Seems it doesn't matter who you know. I don't have a masters degree or finance background, I am a very talented generalist with international experience. I noticed someone commented the locals get all the jobs and I don't think that's true. I've been unemployed for over a year despite excellent credentials. Don't want to leave home, but I'm getting interviews for jobs from other states far more. It seems more jobs are in Raleigh. |
