Lots of people cannot find work. Where have you applied? What are you interested in? Where do you have work experience? Have you contacted your college placement service for help? Have you prepared a resume?

Think about and/or act on these things and a direction should suggest itself.

I have two years of full time work experience in law firms. the last position I had, for about a year and a half. I've applied to just about every reasonable opportunity out there and have only secured a part time position with Fed Ex Ground as a Package Handler. My resume is prepared, of course. I have been out of school for seven years, I graduated in 2001. I'm not sure if college placement would be of any help at this point.

Once again, what interests you? Not law, I hope. That said, what work did you do in law firms? Maybe you have transferable skills. Maybe you need to repackage your resume to emphasize your skills. Can you obtain substitute teacher work with your Poli Sci degree? You appear to have writing skills; can't you market those?

Try posting your resume anonymously on the two major job boards. You'll likely receive a bunch of nonsense sales responses, but you may receive something legitimate.

Try applying online to every company you can think of. Many companies let candidates submit general apps. They run keyword searches for candidates that match position criteria.

Once again, it's tough finding work anymore, even for very experienced people.

No one will get you a job. Posters can offer ideas and suggestions. Beyond that, you must have a resume, read ads, find employers and apply for work yourself. Good luck.

If you are a civil engineer, Qassem, you should have a professional engineers organization you can join. You should be able to make contacts and know which companies hire engineers. You should have professional journals to which you can subscribe that would list openings.

Once again, Qassem, you certainly should know of or be able to find a professional civil engineers organization in Chicago that would have contacs or leads. Do you have the right to work in the U.S.? If you do, that would help, I'm sure.

If you received a BA in Polical Science you can do a number of jobs.
First you have to become persistent. You need to followup by phone on
the resumes and cover letters you send. Don't take no for an answer,
keep leaving phone messages and sending emails. I too received a BA
in Polit Sci years ago. I went to work as an assistant buyer and worked my way up to Purchasing Manager. Company reorganized and I went
to another organization where I became a VP of Purchasing. That organization was acquired, I signed a 2 year contract and was let go
at the end of it. I am currently looking. I much older than you and
apply online, I send email of cover letter and resume. Then I call
the company in a day or two to check they received my paperwork. I do
this to start a dialogue to hopefully end up settin up interview. Also
you can send out a prospecting letter to the CEO of a number of your
target companies, wait 3-4 days and call them. Many you won't get through to but you will reach that 1 0r 2 who may just set the appoint
-ment to come in for an interview. Don't defeat yourself. You need to
also go to networking events. Stop by some of the places you want to
work and see if the receptionist can hand your resume to the head of
HR or to the hiring manager of a department you want to work in. Ask
if you can get his business card and begin a campaign of staying in
touch with him via email every week or so. You'll be surprised how
much moxey can pay off.

Not a good idea, and especially if the hiring manager, HR., etc. has no openings. You'll likely annoy that person, and end up antagonizing him and killing your chances.

Look at it from that person's side of the desk. He probably receives more e-mail than he can stand. Your weekly e-mail would be one more problem with which he must deal. The most likely way he'll deal with it is by deleting it. Even worse, the hiring manager may never see your e-mail. He may have spam filters which may block it.

Same goes for leaving repeated phone messages. There's nothing more annoying from the recipient's point of view than receiving repeated voice mails from the same caller. Eventually, the hiring manager, HR, etc. may leave orders with the receptionist not to allow your calls. Do you want to make that kind of impression?

You want to come across as calm and professional. No matter how polite you are, you risk biting the hand you want to feed you by leaving persistent e-mails and voice mails. You tarnish your image and diminish your value.
