Concerned in Albany, Georgia said: Bob,

It really sounds like you hate where you are and if so you should consider moving from Columbus because it isn't that bad. Maybe it just isn't the place for you, but don't down the place for everyone else that wants to come and live there.

It really IS that bad. I have been living here since 1962 off and on. A terrible back injury and family brought me back here. This place is horrible. Twenty years ago, not good..but not like this. Everything they have here is for SHOW. We have terrible poverty here and a lot of it. The school system is horrid. I had an apartment in Iowa a few years ago and lost it due to the flood. My mother is here and problematic; but I am going to have to leave anyway. I can't take it. Crime is awful, and what makes it really awful is that most people here are afraid to report it. It takes a lot of money to move, especially if they are alone and have animals. You do not want to come here. I am an old army brat and that is how our poor family got down in this dump to begin with.

Bob1 in Columbus, Georgia said: The best jobs in Columbus right now are.....

Chicken Shanker
Stay at Home Mom (or Dad or both)
Panhandler(Manchester exit pays more than most city jobs)
Dumpster Diver at local stores
Pro Fisherman(at local parks)

This about says it. Columbus also has terrible racial problems which are swept under the rug, and the Power structure here has a once a monthly meeting called 1columbus. It is an absolute joke. Not one city council member lives in the city of Columbus. Most all are in Midland for living...certainly not here. Columbus police department is not all bad..but they do bring in a LOT of revenue..so you know what that means! DO NOT ever make one mad. You will be detained until you snap and when you do..you are in one hell of a bind! No I have no criminal record..not even a ticket; but they will detain you until you get furious, or have to use the bathroom or somethng...then they will say that you were aggressive and they can hurt or even kill you here. Sounds absurd..but it happened to me. Got pulled over for a so called crack tail light. That took 18 police cars. I had just had back surgery and my nerve to my bladder was nicked. NO BATHROOM. I had an accidient going home. So many officers had to look at my license that they lost it. I finally got it back...could not speed and had an accident. I begged them to search me, my car ..anything! They would not. Funny. Ha Ha. The fun at the parks spills over into the mall...where not long ago was on police lock down...family day got a little 'violent or over exhuberant'. Traffic up North is worse than Atlanta..while the South side sits in absolute tatters. Honestly ...this IS a horrible place!

Not one city councll member lives in this city. Not ONE. Columbus also has racial problems that get swept under the rug, and they have a 1Columbus meeting here every month. Ridicuous! Not all police here are bad..but they do have to bring in a LOt of revenue, sooo....Also, if you make one made they will detain you until you go absolutely mad; then they will say you are violent or obstructing justice. I have no crimanal history and no tickets..I am 54. I got stopped for a 'cracked' tail light. That took 18 police cars, almost two hours..I begged to go to the bathroom but could NOT. When they let me go..they lost my license and had to find which officer had it. I could not make it home and had an accident. Yes...a LOT of fun here.

Never do business with McDaniel Flooring Company. My son worked there since he was 19 and is now 36. Why did he work there for so long? Because he smoked pot and was on probation for a while. Kinda hard to get a job when one is on probation...like a lot of the guys there. They give free estimates; that is one they come out there and estimate 'you'. If bossman thinks you can pay and will pay more...you Will. They are disorganized with their customers and with their employees. The employees have a 'down' attitude, and one cannot blame them. They are listed as sub contractors or independent contractors-- so that the business can cheat on their taxes. Some of the employees have kids, and it makes them mad because they cannot claim any tax benefits. My son should not have been smoking pot. He could have done a lot better than McDaniel's; but, McDaniel's gets employees with bad personal problems so that they can take advantage of them. They do; as many of them have legal problems, they would have to do day labor ...if McDaniels did not take them. The big boss doesn't have to worry when he smokes pot..cause he gets all the money. The employee's (subs/independent contractors) do have to worry because they do not get paid much. It used to be a pretty good company...until the grandpa died. My son doesn't work there anymore because he is with the bosses wife daughter. They knew she would tell him, that she got molested and hurt as a child, so they did not want her to get with my son..their X employee. It is like a little 'corrupt kingdom'...they will gauge you, as a customer and that means-- charging more or less and the quality of work too. My son never thought that was fair. He quit smoking pot, and I hope he gets a real job very soon. McDaniels are certainly not fair to these desperate guys that work there, nor to their customers.

This is hard to get up. Don't use McDaniel Flooring Company. My son worked there for a long time because he smoked pot and was on probation for a while. They give free estimates and will estimate you. If they think you will pay more, they will charge you more. This also pertains to the quality of work you receive. They are very mean to their employees too. They call them independent or sub contractors so that they can cheat on their taxes. These poor guys have a lot of personal problems so they can't complain. I am glad my son quit smoking pot because it is illegal. They can..because they make a lot of money. The employees cannot file for their tax benefits because McDaniel's gives them 1099's. It is sort of a corrupt little kingdom with the way they treat their customers and employees. (subs?) If you are rich they will do a good job, as they like the recommendations from the higher ups; not so- if you are not as rich. My son never thought that was fair. He dosn't work there because he quit smoking pot, and they did not want him to date the bosses wife daughter. She would, and did tell him about how she was molested...so they fired him. He will get a better job now though..I am sure. Smoking pot is illegal, although booz is worse; but he can get a better job now. If you are rich or prominent they will do a good job for you..but if not, my son said they had a lot of complaints.

My twin sister lives in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I know..it is cold; but after decades of living 'here' in Columbus GA she just could not take it anymore. They are kind and merciful to the needy..although they do not pamper them. My sister is quasi disabled, but a very, very, good musician. She is allowed to work in Iowa so that she will not lose her medical insurance. They have a lot of nice things for REAL people that are not just 'there' to show off. They have a dog walking park, a place where people can swim, a place for low income folks to go and do some service to the community without feeling like 'low life's' as is the case here in Columbus GA. That flood thing is finally over and I am trying to move up there to be with her and get out of this horrible place. It is not so crowded up there because they don't try to stick everything in just one part of town..like here. It is much safer, no racial problems to speak of, and while no place is heaven on earth...I will feel better up there. Columbus GA closes its buses down REAL early and they are expensive. They don't do that in Cedar Rapids. People are a lot more 'real' there and it is easy to see where one fits in. If one is willing to do something for the community there, they are more than helpful in helping those needing it. My sister loves old folk music and they actually appreciate it up there. They sure don't here. It is a good place for computer people as Donnatech is up there...although I hear one has to be pretty good to get hired there. The rich people are not snobs like here and have a much better attitude towards everyone. The church communities do not cut each other down and are friendly towards each other. I hope I can get back there. I had an apartment up there before the flood, then my mom got real sick...but, I hope I can get up there as soon as possible. My sister would never come back here. She said moving to Iowa was the best thing she ever did.

@ Ellen Horn,Let Me Start By Saying This,McDaniel Flooring Is NOT RESPONSIBLE For Your Sons Pot Smoking! It Has Been Clinically Proven In Several Studies That Marijuana Contains NO ADDICTIVE PROPERTIES!So In Other Words He Is A Pot Head Because He Chooses To Be And Even If It Was Addictive Your Son Has Not Made That Effort In 17 Years To Quit,I Mean Really If He Was There For 17 Years It Must Not Have Been That Bad.You Should Be Thankful That They Gave Him A Job Period.Secondly I Have PERSONALLY Observed Over Several Years Several Of The Subs That R Working For McDaniel Flooring And I Must Say They Slack Of ALOT. It Should Not Matter If You Get A 1099 Or A W2 At The End Of The Year,If You Get A Paycheck Each Week YOU SHOULD EARN IT! Oh And "BOSSMAN" As You Call Him Is Just That THE BOSS He Shouldn't Have To Ride Them To Get Their Job Done. They Have Worked HARD Establishing This Business And Working It Up To Where It Is And If Im Not Mistaken I Dont Think It Would Have Stuck Around This Many Years If It Wasnt A Good Business."Bossman" Doesnt Ask Them To Do ANYTHING He Hasnt Already Done.Thirdly,I Dont Know Where You Get Your Information From But You Can Still Claim Your Tax Benefits With A 1099 Especially True If You Have Dependents.Legally & Technically McDaniel Flooring IS An Independent Contractor,It Is A Family Owned And Operated Business Hence Independent Contractor.Their Guys Are Paid For LABOR/SERVICES/INSTALLATION HENCE "SUBCONTRACTORS" NO ONE IS CHEATING ON THEIR TAXES!!! And If They Were "CHEATING"On Their Taxes Do You Really Think That The IRS Wouldn't Have Caught It Already? Finally,My Advice To You,Get Educated And Get Your Information Straight Before You Start A Rant Blaming Someone Else For You And Your Sons Problems.ESPECIALLY If Your Going To Throw Dirt On An Excellent,Well-Established Business."LIFE DOES NOT DEPEND ON GETTING DEALT GOOD CARDS, ITS DEPENDS ON HOW YOU PLAY THE ONES YOU GET"
