Betty Grable in Las Vegas, Nevada said: I moved here and didn't know anyone. I got a temp job when I first came here and then applied for a position where I worked. I got 'lucky' or so I'm told. Beside the blatant bigotry and nepotism where I work the pay is good and the benefits are good but the people are mean spirited and cliquish.

If you're willing to sacrifice your integrity to make a decent living or look the other way when someone does something that's unethical and on the periphery of the law then you can get a job. As long as you don't tell anyone your opinion, your personal business or complain you're as good as gold because anyone who has lived here all their life is an authoritarian to the core.

The comment upabove is so true.If you follow this step you will be just fine!!

Look, if you're under 21 you're most likely not going to get a job. I'm 17, I have no criminal record, no drug record, I'm just a normal teen. I've applied at too many places to name, and still haven't even got a call back. My girlfriend is currently pregnant, so I'm making my way into an HVAC training school. They make pretty good money, but I'm still trying to find a minimum wage job to make some money while I go to school.

If anybody has any connections, even for the worst job, let me know. I'd really appreciate it.

Nico.

You are to be commended for taking charge of your life and accept responsibility for you, your girlfriend and your child. My prayers are with you that you find something soon. Most 17 years olds would be more concerned with partying and texting. Your parents must be proud of you.

Keep up the good work and good luck.

Las Vegas, NV is on the low down. Worst place by far that I've ever decided to move to. If you want to be without and deprive yourself from a good living then Las Vegas, NV is the only place to make it happen sooner then later. This is gorund 0 folks.
Las Vegas, NV is over rated for what it really is. If your planning on moving here you better be retired or retarded. The place has no real since of community or culture. Infact, the only one leaving happy are the tourists.

A lot of what you say is true. TOO many transient people. DUring the years 2000 and until the bottom fell out, people moved here thinking that jobs were plentiful and the streets were paved with gold and you were able to buy a $350,000 house with no money down and only make $50,000 a year. Some idiots still think that waY. Well guess what? In another year or two, all these homes that investors are buying up (and THEY are the ones who ruined it to begin with) are going to be back into foreclosure because the investors will realize you can't over charge in rent when the competition is so fierce so again they will walk on all these properties.

We are one of the only two cities in this country with the highest unemployment rate because it is a "one employer town". You can't have a healthy economy when you rely on one industry to keep things afloat. The casino honchoes made bad judgment calls and now we are ALL suffering here.

This whole city had the makings to be one of the best places to live in the United States. But it's all gone down hill and it will take years for it to even become half of what it could have been. The only ones that will be able to move here and live comfortably are retirees because they won't have to worry about finding a job that only pays $9 an hour.

Being originally from a city that has REAL sports teams, this town has a very amatuerish look upon professional sports. They are actually pathetic! When I first moved here, it was during the major league baseball playoffs. I was shocked that coverage of the games took 2 minutes and then the local sports anchor spent another 15 minutes talking about fricking HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL!!! And it hasn't changed any in the last 7 years!! Can't wait to go back to a city where I caN actually enjoy professional sports, even if it is just on the local news at night!

I agree with you 100% This place is a joke! I lived in far better conditions where the grass was green and I had many choices. I've never had to struggle finding a job or paying bills until I moved here to lost wages, NV. Casinos here are a waste of anyones time to apply for because the unemployment rate actually outweighs what little open positions are available.
At this point I can only hope to move out of this place since there's nothing to be excited about anymore.

Has the unemployment rises Las Vegas, NV still sets at ground 0 For anyone hoping on getting a Casino job think again.
You will be forced to go online and apply for a position and no one will ever call you or setup an interview with you.
It's 100% a waste of time and effort. You will be far better off living where your at. I hope Las Vegas, NV burns to the ground because I hate this place with a passion! Las Vegas, NV is a failure!

Mandy in Las Vegas, Nevada said: Another thing - if you have any college degrees, it's a given you won't get a job. Or if you have longevity and experience in your chosen field, ie legal assistant, paralegal, forget it. They want the experience but won't pay for it so they hire those who will accept a $10 an hour position and wouldn't know the court house from Sam's Club. I have heard from my fellow unemployed that you have to "dumb down" your resume or else you won't even get an interview let alone have someone read your resume. I know attorneys who are working at moving companies, selling time share crap, etc.

I myself am moving out of Las Vegas next month and moving back home to Illinois. Sure, it's not golden there either but I have family and friends back there and at least I won't end up homeless - which is a big possibility if I stay here.

It's all very sad. I used to think Vegas would bounce back before other areas, but it doesn't look that way. We haven't even hit bottom yet so times ahead are going to be rough.

And don't believe all the hype you read about City Center hiring 12,000 people. There over 15,000 casino workers that have been layed off since 2008. So of those 12,000 City Center jobs, most likely they will all be filled with unemployed casino workers and NOT anyone else. Same with Hard Rock and Planet Hollywood. Always wtih the casinos - they hire those who already worked at or are working at a casino.

You said that right! No jobs, nothing exciting about Las Vegas, NV other then the fact we can run while there's still time...

Las Vegas, NV is a dump!!! Nothing but a dry boring desert in the the middle of nowhere. No jobs like the greater American cities we called home at one point in our lifes before moving here. This place is a wasteland full of hype, lies and B.S. Las Vegas, NV can't even complete with Texas because at least you can get a job offer in two weeks compared to living in this dumb founded state called Nevada. Statistically Las Vegas, NV is the most abandoned city in the United States. I can see why because Las Vegas, NV truly sucks!!!

The comment from Austin Tx was made months ago. We all know that Aliante Station and M Resort hired a bunch of people and now those people are all on unemployment. City Center opens in December but who knows how long and what damage that place will do to the rest of the Strip.

Las Vegas hasn't hit bottom yet. And when it does - look out.

you're right! Working at a casino is no longer a permanent job. Also the quote you replied to from "VegasLocal in Las Vegas - Companies in HealthCare, Nursing, and Education are fueling growth and will continue to rise" is so out of touch!!

Sunrise Hospital just layed off a hundred people; education? THey are also laying off in that field, too. The County's divisions have all been hit hard, too - the courts, Children services. So it is NOT easy to find a job here. If you are into the tech part, you may be able to score a job at one of the slot companies, but even they are feeling the pinch.

My neighbor works for one of the local casinos; he's a dealer. He used to rake in $200 a night in tips. NOT any longer!! He feels lucky if he gets $50-75 a night!! BTW - as with all casinos, his hourly rate is $6.50 an hour!! He noticed when people win any kind of big money, they no longer stick around like they used to, you know - gamble more, have a drink or two. They bolt! They take their money and run!!

The only lists Las Vegas will be appearing on for the next 20 years is (1) high unemployment; (2) most foreclosures; (3) City that lost the most residents in a 5 year period because there are no jobs and no diversification of industry in Nevada because politicians are "still sleeping" with the casinos and believe that gaming is THE most important industry in the State;(4) most hotels rooms in the world; (5) most vacant hotel rooms in the world. And the list goes on.

Now you can progress much faster in a major metropolitan market place compared to Lost Wages, NV Now you don't have to worry about knowing somebody just to get a real low paying service job! Places like Dallas, TX cater to the masses with tons of employment offers compared to this pee hole rotten town! The last thing on most major large corporations minds are who you know. They want to know your skill set, what experience you can bring to the company and so forth. They don't have time to know who knows you and all that stupid $hit!!! Who cares!!! All you need to know is the companies history and how they play a major role in today's business world. This is why I love living is the big city. It's to the point without all the B.S.

That's right people who are thinking of coming here: Almost 8000 people in Las Vegas ALONE filed for NEW unemployment benefits. That does not include those already collecting unemployment.

Life sucks in Lost Wages, NV

I am at the point right now that if I don't do what I am going to do - moving back home to Illinois - I will be homeless by January!!! I am so far behind in paying my bills, that as soon as I get back home, I have to file for bankruptcy. I can barely make just my basic financial obligations of rent, utilities, health care and food on a monthly basis. I don't drive my car unless I have to so I can save gas. I have a friend who disputes that things are so bad here but she has a job!! And she doesn't want to hear how bad things are here and it's only going to get worse and that article I posted confirms it.

I may not get a job right away back home, but at least I won't be homeless since I'll be living with a family member!! And I'll be able to afford my CObra premiums which will go back to the original cost in November of almost $500 a month.

I wonder why no one such as the media has done a study on how many people have actually left Las Vegas since January of 2009. From what I heard and this obviously isn't a confirmed fact with figures, but both the manager at the UHaul facility I am renting my truck from AND the tellers at two of teh WAMU locations that I go to have said many people have left or are leaving Las Vegas.

It is a sad state of affairs here. What once was a city that had so much potential is now a pathetic mess. And until the Powers That Be realize that you cannot have a healthy economy and a low unemployment rate when you rely on one industry to carry everything. And that is gambling.

I agree with 3dfuzion. SOme areas of teh country will bounce back quicker. There are already signs in some States back east that things are slowly but surely getting better even though it may take some time. Texas wasn't bad in the first place so they are doing very well. It will be pockets of the country that will start seeing improvement, hopefully after the first of the year. But Vegas is doomed for at least the next few years, if not longer.

ANYONE who moves here, unless they are retirees, is doomed.

City Center will be okay at the begining, but mark my words - by February or March, several thousand workers will lose their jobs! It is always like that when a new casino opens - everything is good for the first few months and then business will slow.

When City Center is completed, all the construction workers will lose their jobs and there is no future construction going on since the three that everyone was depending on have all shut down construction. The Fountainbleu, Echelon and there is another one I can't think of. All construction has stopped at these properties. So you will have several thousand construction workers with no jobs.

I might add that my livelihood in Las Vegas, NV shouldn't rely or be effected on behalf of me knowing someone just to get a damn job! When did I ever give a rat's a$$ about that and why should I be losing any sleep over something so pointless and stupid? The Las Vegas, NV hiring process is like reverse psychology 101 you will not get a call for an interview and even after you apply, they might call you a month later. Yeah, like that's going to do something for me when my rent is due by the end of the month. This place is humane and that's why Las Vegas, NV is cursed by GOD! Actions speak more then words!!!

I hope you have plastic credit cards to make it on for 5 to 6 months because what ever life style or comfort zone you once had my friend is long over with.

The only reason las vegas is most abandoned is because its the fstest growing city in the nation as far as people moving here and construction so jokers that come here decide they dont like it and bad mouth it because of their own fault of doing any research before moving here. Yes, like I said before a fan of one and not many. It's nice to hear your success story but for most it's not that easy.
Your favored industry "Casinos" are "EPIC FAILURES" which you can not rely on for anything. I can't tell you how many horror stories I have heard of these so called big named casinos over hiring and then laying off 1000's after business slows. I don't even care for casinos anymore has I'm already working in a position that came to Vegas. Finally some kind of industry in Las Vegas, NV besides a smoke filled Casino with no jobs or future....

that's ok, its 2009 and still i have no problem finding a job ( i have experience in other fields than casinos) i dont understand whats the problem with the ones who move here and cant find a job. and no i dont rely on any pull from my past. i just recently applied for city center and was offered a position, true my resume is steller but i havnt been in casino work for many years, so in defence of las vegas again, i say, dont like it, dont go away mad, just go away.

Dave in Las Vegas, Nevada said: The only reason las vegas is most abandoned is because its the fstest growing city in the nation as far as people moving here and construction so jokers that come here decide they dont like it and bad mouth it because of their own fault of doing any research before moving here. I moved here from san diego, ca in '93 with ten dollars in my pocket, a bicycle and a stack of resumes, i had a job the next day and six months later was working in a new casino that opened up making top wage, as far as las vegas for me goes, i was dealt an ace since moving to this town and have never regretted it, i still love my san diego and miss my ocean but they are close enough to get to i dont mind. so i say, if you dont like it, move on!!

Las Vegas is NO LONGER the fast growing city. After City Center is completed, there is no new construction on the horizon. The other two properties that were to be built are now on hold = Echelon and Fountainbleu. So thousands of construction workers will be unemployed.

And if you live here - you KNOW casino jobs are temporary at best. Those 7800 people who filed for NEW unemployment claims in July go against your optisimism that was here over 15 years ago; hell, the optimism of 7 years ago when I first came here. Things have changed and you should Thank God you STILL have a job.

I'm sorry Dave, if I was an HR hiring manager - with your spelling and command of basic grammar - I would never hire you, but then as you say - you got a City Center job. Doing what, you don't say. Something for minimum wage? However - Good Luck in January when you are on the unemployment rolls.

I've been here 7 years, work in a profession that you will NEVER be qualified for and cannot find a job. So don't go bragging - or stretching the truth - about your job situation. It is a well-known fact anyone with a college degree or has any amount of higher education - Vegas doesn't want you BECAUSE you don't need either to work in a casino unless you are "upstairs" in the executive suites. One must "downplay" your intelligence to find a job here unless you are in the medical profession. It will always be a "minimum wage" town as long as the casinos are running things and as such, will attract those types of job seekers. And that is what is sad: This could be a great city to live in and to settle down in for the rest of your life, but it will always be a transient town.

You are 44 and you write like that???? The Cali school system must be as bad as the Clark County School District.
