Cecilia in Albuquerque, New Mexico said: [QUOTE I would check into New Mexico. The average salary is 48K and all the new studios just opened there. They are planning a new university as well.

I moved to Albuquerque NM from the Boston area. Took a $30K pay cut. The cost of housing here is lower, but overall living costs are higher or the same. Overall, it's about the same as suburban Boston here in Albuquerque. Santa Fe is out of sight.

I don't know of any new schools being built here. There is an extension of UNM in Rio Rancho (a city outside of Albuquerque) but it is hanging on by a thread. The legislature has cut the UNM budget by $15M this year, and more cuts are on the way. There is a hiring freeze and salaries have been reduced by approx. 1.6% by making employees pay a greater share of retirement benefits. For the area, UNM is still a good deal if you can get a job, but many people wait 5+ years before getting into the system.

If you are interested in working for UNM, I would recommend you get into the temporary labor pool. Often people who do this end up getting permanent jobs. One great benefit is free tuition if you are a 1/2 time employee. So even if you have to get a "lowly" job you can get a degree for the cost of your books.

There are only a very few good advertising/design jobs here. There are some film industry jobs (which the poster above referred to) but they are few and far between (not enough trained professionals here in NM). UNM does have programs for training in the film industry. However, it's possible that the enticing perks that drew the film industry here may be subject to budget cutting. It's unclear what will happen then.

Overall, NM is a great place, but the employment situation is as bad as it is anywhere. NM relies on gas and oil revenues, which has been dismal the last few years.

Good luck on your searches.

What studios are you referring too...

There are a couple of studios in Albuquerque. One is a Sony Studio that specializes in Animation. The University of New Mexico has a program - Interdisciplinary Film and Digiltal Media (IFDM)- that trains people to create an employee pipeline for the movie industry. There is also Q Studios, a film production studio. Lionsgate is supposed to open a studio in Rio Rancho (a city on the outskirts of ABQ) but it hasn't been built yet.

Hell no I don't miss N.C. All of that drama over there??? Be for real!! Cops stopping you for no reason and they act like they got it out for every black man over there in North Carolina, then they have a bunch of mindless punks over there following you around alienating your privacy, riding around trying to find out where you live so they can meddle with you on your job to make you quit!!!! or trying to get you Fired!!! Everytime something does happen they act like they are doing everything they can to avoid a law suit. So f*&$ N.C.

I have a masters degree
I also have a multitude of skills that I aquired while
I was attaining my degree.
Machining,tool and die,welding,plumming,pipe fitting.electrical
hydralics,phnematics,Air conditioning refrigeration and heating.
ETc.

I have never been so unemployed and miserable as I am here in Phoenix

There is not one thing that I can say that is good about this place, even the mail is screwewd up.
I can watch a UPS package go from New York to Phoenix in 2 days and watch it sit in Phoenix for the remainder of the next five days before it getsa to my door.

The people here are totally unacountable for their actions
We have to pay extra every year for electricity, cable, home owners association fees,
car insurance,NO health insurance, and I have to learn to speak spanish too?
I`m going back east as soon as I can.

I have lived in Arizona for 8 years now, and I have noticed and lived through several layoffs, after about two and half years i have noticed that companies seem to lay off employees to bring in new employees for a lower wage. I have two BA's and a masters and am always told am over qualified but come on if I know what the job pays and what type of company it is shouldn't it be up to if I want the job. I just want a company where I can build a career and not just have a job. Any help finding a company that believes in their employees and not the next best thing would be awesome....Am willing to do the work and prove myself...

I just left Phoenix to find work here in CT last month.
No one here in Norwalk will honor any of my certifications or previous job experience because Phoenix is a joke.
I dont know what I`m going to do.
I have spent the majority of my working life in Phoenix
and I had loathed every day that I was there.

All the job agencies here cant believe that I have been layed off frome 4 jobs in the last two years, they think I`m lieng even though I provide them with phone numbers.

The last job I had I got laid off frome and the owner of the company is claiming that I quit so now I dont have any unemployment income and I`m stranded out here with no moneyand no job.

If anyone is reading this please stay away frome Phoenix Arizona
It is the worst place in the world to be for anything.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Since 2007 I have been laid off from 3 jobs and a 4th one closed up shop, showed up to work one morning to find the place locked up and a sign on the door wishing us luck. The fun part is this was in OHIO, it really is not any better anywhere else folks. I just relocated to TX 2 months ago for a job, hopefully things will be a little better here but if not at least I will be warm!

You may want to try the Phoenix, ChAndler, Mesa, Glendale Libraries. Doesn't pay well - $8.50 - $10.00 per hour but they usually have free english classes.

Also Shell, Exxon, Chevron gas stations have better paying jobs $13 - $15.00 per hour to start plus benefits.

Hello everyone,

I am relocating to Chandler, Arizona because my fiancé was offered a great opportunity that w could not turn down. I am currently working in Georgia at a Community College as the Assistant Director of Financial Planning. I have a BS in Sociology, a Masters in Public Health and I am currently working on a Doctorates in Community Health (Expected graduation Dec 2013). I a thoroughly trying to find a job within the Public/Community Health Sector. At this point, I am willing to work anywhere just to get out there and then I'll continue to fight for the career that identifies closely with my education and experience. If you all have any helpful tips, I would greatly appreciate it. Good luck to those who are searching as well. It is hard, but I'm sure we will make it to our destination.

I hope you have had some luck since you posted this. I can tell you that, after living in Chandler for over 6 years now, education has ZERO value in this state. There are NO JOBS here, unless you are in sales or work in a call center. Even healthcare jobs, which are abundant due to the aging population here, are difficult to secure. And expect to make about 25% less out here than most other parts of the country. My advice would be to NOT BUY A HOME HERE. That way, if your wife gets layed off (which happens constantly out here to everyone), you can pick up and go back home. Good luck to you! I wish someone would have warned me before I moved out here. And yes, I have a college degree and many years of work experience and still cannot find a job that pays over $12/hour.

Thank you for your comment. I have had several interviews but nothing has came through for me. Most responses that I have received stated that my salary requirements exceeds their budget for the year. I have no idea what i'm going to do but I have to figure it out one way or another.

Again, thanks for the insight.

Good luck..
