I think Portland is a great place to retire, though not necessarily a good place for work. As far as housing goes, Portland housing is MORE expensive than Yuba City. If you live far outside of Portland, then you can save on housing, but have a harder time finding a job. Should you decide to live in Portland, try Tigard, OR, a suburb on the southwest side of Portland. It has cheaper housing, access to lots of part time jobs (like the mall), and is a safer, cleaner area than southeast Portland, which also has cheap housing, but in not-so-nice neighborhoods. The rain might get on your nerves, so make lots of friends and go out to coffee shops or karaoke. Those are relatively cheaper pursuits than going out to eat, which can get spendy. You can also take advantage of the hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails. Portland has TONS of parks. 95% are free and beautiful year-round.
