The north-west end of San Bernardino around the college is a nicer area.

I just moved to OC (fullerton) from fontana..which is very close to San Bernadino proper. San Bernadino doesn't have a very good rap...lots of meth and other drugs. Have you tried Rancho Cucamonga? or North Fontana? I think these are good places to start. Also, I know Fontana is trying to be more desirable and the city is offering help (money, etc.) to those who wish to buy homes there. There is a tremendous campaign to revamp the city. I tried to spend most of my time in Rancho Cucamonga....that's my choice.
