Under immediate supervision, on an internship appointment basis, performs a variety of tasks assisting administrative and/or technical program managers in developing data and documentation to meet organizational and program objectives and the requirements of the educational program in which enrolled; performs related work as required.

Temporary Part Time Position - Minimum of 350 hours of work during spring and summer
May 14, 2013 through August 18, 2013 $12.67 per hour

Represents the Iowa Lottery at various booth/tent and promotional events held at Iowa Lottery retailers or during select summer events around the state of Iowa. Sell Iowa Lottery tickets, answer questions about lottery products and conduct lottery prize promotional giveaways during each event. Intern will be paired with a Lottery employee at first events on schedule, but may staff booth on his/her own on occasion. A specific list of promotional events has not yet been developed but will be finalized as the season approaches.

SCOPE OF WORK:
A day's work at promotional events will include travel to and from events, setup and teardown of the lottery booth/tent for the event, and staffing of the booth/tent for several hours during the event. Tent events are scheduled on both weekdays and weekends and it will be the intern's responsibility to staff those events. Work includes selling tickets to the public, answering questions about lottery products and conducting the promotional giveaways for players (those who make a qualifying purchase have a chance to win lottery prizes). Documentation necessary for procuring lottery tickets, tracking sales and maintaining inventory used for promotional events will also be required.

The locations where the Lottery could have a booth include Iowa Lottery retailers, the Iowa Speedway, Iowa State Fair, Clay County Fair, Indianola Balloon Festival and other events/locations to be determined. Intern will report to Lottery headquarters in Des Moines or other prearranged location to pick up any supplies needed and prizes to give away.

REQUIREMENTS:
Intern must be 21 years of age. We're looking for young and energetic individuals who can put a good face on the Lottery. Prior retail-type experience or event experience is a plus. This individual will travel to events with little supervision. Further resources will be made available to have limited supervision in place if necessary. Intern will visit many parts of the state.

Employment will require a background check and a clean driving record. Training expenses are covered. Selected candidate will need to show a valid driver's license in order to drive a lottery vehicle.

Applicants for this internship must be currently enrolled students in a degree program at an accredited educational institution. The preferred college major or coursework/background is marketing, public relations, business communications or journalism.

Applicants must be able to express information to groups effectively, taking into account the audience and the nature of the information; listen to others; and respond appropriately.

Must have the ability to interact with state employees, business representatives and the general public to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must have the ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing situations, making critical decisions and recommendations.

Must display high standards of ethical conduct and exhibit honesty and integrity. Theft-related conduct, dishonest or unethical behavior constitute grounds for immediate dismissal.

Must display a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently, work with minimal supervision and demonstrative attention to detail.

Must respond appropriately to supervision, make an effort to follow policy and cooperate with supervisors, and align behavior with the needs, priorities and goals of the organization.
