Performs supervisory duties involving the health care and sustenance of animals in an animal shelter.

Supervises the work of subordinate staff by assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling and evaluating performance to insure the proper and humane treatment and care of animals.
Supervises the operation and use of the crematorium.
Receives public complaints and implements appropriate action individually or through the assignment of applicable personnel to insure an appropriate and responsive reply and foster good public relations.
Inspects shelter building and grounds for cleanliness to insure humane conditions and treatment of animals.
Insures that cleaning equipment and machinery operate in accordance with established operational and security guidelines and procedures.
Prepares reports and maintains records in accordance with established policies and all record keeping requirements. Reports and records include, but are not limited to, animal history, kennel sanitation, use of medical supplies and equipment, controlled drug dispensing, euthanasia reports, crematorium procedures and actions.
Records, retrieves and verifies animal history information using a computer.
Picks up donated shelter supplies from private and public agencies.
May be required to perform the duties of a Senior Animal Care Assistant.
Supports the Department in mandated ESF-17 (Emergency Support Function 17) responsibilities in the event of a disaster or during an activation of the County’s Emergency Operations Center .
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of Florida and Hillsborough County animal care and control laws and ordinances pertaining to small animals.
Considerable knowledge of the care and humane treatment of animals.
Working knowledge of the functions, services, procedures and regulations of the Animal Services Department.
Working knowledge of animal drug use regulations and euthanasia programs, including biohazardous waste disposal and the operation of an animal cremation unit.
Working knowledge of general sanitation and maintenance techniques used in an animal shelter.
Some knowledge of animal diseases and health requirements.
Skill in administering medication and medical treatment to animals.
Ability to use animal handling equipment within a shelter environment, including specialized handling of dangerous or suspected rabid animals.
Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.
Ability to maintain files and prepare work related reports.
Ability to work under stressful conditions.
Ability to collect, analyze and evaluate information and develop logical conclusions.
Ability to use a computer and related software.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to control and move animals weighing up to 200 pounds.
Ability to work effectively with others.
Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
Note: Minimum Qualifications MUST be attained before the recruitment ending date.
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; and
Three years experience in animal care in a shelter environment, veterinary clinic, or animal care facility; and
Possession of a valid Driver License.
OPEN AND CLOSED RECRUITMENTS : We are running concurrent Closed (Internal) and Open recruitments. Internal candidates on a closed eligibility list must be considered first, prior to a selection being made from the open eligibility list. To be considered for the same classification under Open recruitment, internal candidates must also apply under the open recruitment process.
