The Office of Student Transitions at East Carolina University is currently seeking applications for the position of Assistant Director of Student Veteran Services. The Office of Student Transitions collaborates with university constituents to create an environment that contributes to the success of all students; provides services that positively impact student progress and persistent; and serves as a resource repository for campus and external constituents to advance learning of student development theories and best practices. This office provides a coordinated, comprehensive approach to enhancing first year student success and beyond, by achieving three core functions: enhancing inclusion and success for all students; facilitating student progress and persistence; and advancing learning.

The Assistant Director for Student Veteran Services will report to the Executive Director of Student Transitions and will assist in the establishment of Student Veteran Services; will advise students; will oversee a Student Veterans organization; and will assist other campus offices in creating programs and events to commemorate special military events and holidays.
Additional responsibilities include assisting in facilitating educational opportunities for faculty and staff regarding veteran-specific issues, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), veteran transition issues, GI Bill, etc; and work on campus-wide efforts to make ECU a more military-friendly institution. The Assistant Director may be asked to assist with other transitions such as Transfer Students and/or First Generation Students. The Assistant Director will serve on various divisional and University committees as assigned or asked by the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and assist in other duties as assigned. The position also involves the secondary elements of instructing (e.g., teaching the freshman seminar course).

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a Master's degree in an appropriate discipline from an appropriately accredited institution related to the responsibilities and at least one year post-masters or equivalent professional work experience in a higher education or military setting. This position requires the flexibility, ability, and willingness to work nights and weekends in structured and unstructured settings with students, staff, and faculty. Candidates with experience or knowledge in student development theory, Student Veterans issues, faculty engagement, and working with non-traditional student populations will be highly considered. Some examples of appropriate disciplines include: counseling, adult education, educational leadership, higher education administration, college student personnel/development, business, or military environment. The ideal candidate will have significant experience with military or Veterans Affairs. The following criteria are essential for the position: experience in military affairs, facilitation, and implementation; experience in advising, counseling or human resources; and knowledge of college student development.
