The Office of Research and Chair of the Department of Foundational Sciences of the School of Dental Medicine at East Carolina University are responsible for the School of Dental Medicine's research and foundational sciences activities.
This office works in close collaboration with the Departments of Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, and General Dentistry in fostering the research activities of the faculty in these departments.
In addition, this office works with the Office of Dental Education and Informatics; Office of Educational Support and Faculty Development; the residency directors of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry; General Practice Residency and Pediatric Dentistry to foster the research activities of dental students and residents; and other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and local/regional health care facilities to provide information and services related to Research and Foundational Sciences.
This office is the home department for faculty in the areas of public health, health services, and biological sciences.
The Associate Dean for Research and Chair of Foundational Sciences provides leadership and management in research areas related to the School's mission.
In addition the Associate Dean/Chair supports appropriate research infrastructure and maintains liaison with the Vice Chancellor of Research and Graduate Studies and entities such as the Office of Grants and Contracts and research-related committees (e.g., animal and human subjects, lab, and environmental safety,).
This position supports the public health, health services, educational and research enterprise, including providing training to investigators and staff while assuring that the School meets all requirements for research compliance.
The Associate Dean/Chair provides administrative support to faculty in the area of research and foundational sciences.
The Associate Dean maintains a strong supportive relationship with other administrators to provide a mission focus, to ensure compliance with accreditation standards; and to ensure state/federal compliances are met.
The Associate Dean/Chair has significant administrative responsibilities in formulating, interpreting, and implementing institutional policy related to research for the School. In addition, the Associate Dean/Chair has significant substantial independence of administrative authority and discretion in all areas of responsibility. This position reports directly to the Dean.
Minimum educational requirements include a doctoral degree, preferably a DDS/DMD. A DDS/DMD with a PhD is highly desirable.
A PhD would be considered if the individual has appropriate academic and administrative experience. Additional requirements include a minimum of five years experience, preferably ten, in progressively responsible administrative and leadership positions related to research.
An understanding and commitment to the primary care mission of the School, a background in research in the areas of public health, epidemiology, health services, educational/informatics, behavioral or clinical as well as experience in working with foundational sciences faculty are all highly desirable.
Additionally, a broad knowledge of the issues of dental education is also desirable.
The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with colleague, leaders and staff at all levels, and the ability to work independently are all essential attributes for this position.
