Community Mediation Services, Inc. (CMS), a not-for-profit agency based in Jamaica, Queens, is pleased to announce that the School Based Department is currently interviewing for part-time (4-6hrs/week) lunch-time Math and/or English Tutors to provide academic enrichment services to at-risk high school youth in Brooklyn/Queens. Created in 1983, our mission is to promote collaborative problem solving for youth, their families, individuals, institutions and organizations within a diverse community.

Services will be provided primarily during lunch-time hours (i.e.- 11-1pm/ will vary depending on site) and will focus on Math or English activities (approx. 2-3days/per week).The scope of these responsibilities includes, but is not limited to:
  • Provide Regents/ Test Prep. for select H.S. students in the areas of English or Math in Queens/Brooklyn (during lunch hours primarily)
  • Develop and implement student-centered, interactive, hands-on experiential learning activities in the area of English or Math
  • Utilize progressive, creative, and innovative methods and instruction models to teach the content area in ways that enable students to make connections across the curricula
  • Provide differentiated instruction to allow for the various learning styles among students
  • Set and maintain standards for classroom behavior
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects to communicate these objectives to students
  • Monitor student attendance and participation in program
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required
  • Accumulate specialized materials for outside reading and homework
  • Provide homework assistance as needed in English or Math
Skill Requirements:
  • BA Degree required (BA student with experience may be considered)
  • 1-2 years H.S. tutoring experience required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be proactive, outgoing and creative (able to relate to/engage poplulation served)
  • Must be empathic, patient, understanding, and a good listener
  • Able to provide innovative lessons/activities to motivate students
