Reporting to the Financial Accounting Manager, provides guidance and accounting support to campus managers and others within the campus community to ensure the application of generally accepted accounting principles, practices and concepts and recommends and implements improvements to accounting practices and processes. Independently performs maintenance, analysis, and reconciliation of assigned accounts. Analyzes financial documents for completeness, accuracy and conformance with established policies and procedures; prepare journal entries; resolves problems associated with incorrect entries, deviations from established procedures, and other inconsistencies with generally accepted accounting principles; reconciles reports and financial data. Participates in year-end closing process and compiles information necessary for the preparation of campus financial statements.
Other duties as assigned. Essential Qualifications Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited four year university with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field. Equivalent to two years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience preferably in a public higher educational setting or a similar environment. Thorough knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices and working knowledge of governmental accounting methods and related laws, rules, and regulations.
Flexibility in handling changing circumstances and priorities. Good verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey complex and procedural issues. Ability to take the initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and handle multiple tasks and responsibilities and to prioritize and organize work to accomplish division goals. Ability to apply laws, rules and procedures related to governmental accounting; apply accounting principles to the analysis of complex accounting problems; utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems; interpret and follow instructions and policy guidelines; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and principles; make sound decisions and recommendations regarding accounting activities; analyze financial and statistical data and draw sound conclusions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to use and operate calculating machines. Proficiency in using personal computers and integrated financial accounting systems. Preferred Qualifications Recent accounting experience with the California State University System or other higher education environment and working knowledge of PeopleSoft financials (CFS & OBIEE data warehouse). Familiarity with Revenue Management Program and Cost Recovery Guidelines.
