As a key member of the Financial Services team, t his position reports to an assigned Financial Services Manager. The Accountant is to perform governmental accounting, auditing, and financial reporting in accordance to GASB and GAAP as they relate to municipal finance. This position is a resource for the compilation of financial reports, budget, data analysis, and special projects.

Duties and Responsibilities/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Behaviors:

Prepare monthly journals and regularly reconcile general ledger accounts.

Maintains the fixed asset database and performs physical asset inventory.

Prepares depreciation journals and reports.

Track escrows and deposits.

Assist in accounts payable processing.

Active in preparations of the annual budget, audit, CAFR, and other financial documents.

Establish and maintain credibility by providing timely and accurate journals, analysis and reports.

Conducts inventory and petty cash audits.

Perform complex analysis of financial data.

Assist departments with general ledger inquiries and accounting questions.

Monitors grant accounts, prepare reports and process draw requests.

Review contracts for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with established procedures.

Ensure financial reporting complies with legal requirements, financial transparency standards, and City policies.

Perform special projects at the request of management.

Assist with coordination of daily work activities, inspect completed work, suggest problem resolutions, and provide training.

Comply with City policies and procedures to include work schedule and attendance policies.

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and financial reporting.

Ability to utilize a variety of data sources to include general ledger systems, CAFRs, monthly financial reports, City policies, and other sources as needed.

Analyze and interpret data and information while recognizing interactive effects and relationships.

Ability to reconcile accounts and develop approaches/techniques to problem resolution.

Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills including the ability to calculate and tabulate data.

Mathematical skills that produce reliable calculations.

Intermediate Microsoft Office including Word and PowerPoint.

High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.

Ability to speak and deal tactfully with others and exhibit a willingness to share information.

Exercise sound judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in various situations.

Ability to identify and implement process improvements.

Strong negotiating skills and ability to assess proposals and contracts.

Demonstrate a collaborative and flexible style, especially during times of change.

Operation of standard office equipment.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. Three (3) years governmental accounting experience and/or CPA certification preferred. Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.

Any work related experience resulting in suitable proficiency levels is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education requirements.

Physical Demands/Supplemental:


Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Some tasks require visual and sound perception and discrimination and oral communications ability.


There is limited exposure to environmental conditions.
