***THIS RECRUITMENT WILL BE USED TO FILL ENTRY LEVEL AND EXPERIENCED PROBATION OFFICER VACANCIES IN VARIOUS DIVISIONS THROUGHOUT THE MARICOPA COUNTY ADULT PROBATION OFFICE***
Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in providing correctional casework services to difficult cases conducting specialized pre-sentence investigations and performs related work as required.
Minimum education and/or experience:
Must have a Bachelor's degree and must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills; must have strong analytical and interpersonal skills; must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to prioritize/organize, as well as plan and manage multiple assignments efficiently and effectively. Must demonstrate professional behavior and ethical standard of conduct. The position also requires problem-solving and change-intervention skills.
Applicant must be able to recognize and handle confrontational situations using Defensive Tactics techniques, if necessary, to include: throwing punches at partial speed, punch-and-kick drills at partial speed, kicking at targets below 24", standing up for 1 hour at a time, controlled falls at partial speed, use of an expandable baton (21") at partial speed, swab application of OC spray under one eye and/or nose.

Individuals who will have a Bachelor’s degree awarded no later than March 2014 will be considered. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Probation Officers are Peace Officers per A.R.S. 12-253.3 and can thus serve warrants, make arrests, and bring persons before the court who are under suspended sentences. Therefore, those selected for the position are required to meet physical standards of the position which are based on the ability to perform effectively all phases of the job duties. The person(s) selected will make 60% to 80% of their client contacts in the field. These various geographic locations throughout Maricopa County may be inaccessible by public transportation. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. To be reimbursed for the authorized use of a private vehicle, employees must provide proof of insurance. (The current reimbursement rate is 55.5 cents/mile.)

Knowledge of principles of human behavior. Knowledge of the principles and practices of pre-sentence investigations and case load management. Skill in correctional casework services, diversion activities, and social investigations for disposition hearings. Skill in interpersonal relationships. Skill in motivating, interviewing, and counseling. Skill in maintaining documentation and utilizing case files effectively. Skill in time management. Ability to apply principles and methods of correctional case work. Ability to analyze and evaluate residential environments. Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written with all levels. Ability to effectively organize work load. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, probationers and the public.
NOTE: Degrees/credits must be from an academically accredited college or university as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).
Essential Job Tasks:
Work assignments and locations vary throughout the County. Assignments will be made based upon the needs of the Department. Directs and counsels probationers regarding the conditions of probation, and payment of restitution, fines, and other costs associated with probation. Conducts field visits (home, work, treatment facilities or jail), conferences, office visits and breathalyzers/urinalysis in connection with investigation and supervision terms established by the Court. Counsel’s probationers in problems related to compliance of terms and lawful interaction within the community. Investigate alleged violations of probation, conducts searches and effects arrests if warranted. Conduct assessments to identify crimino-genic risk and needs and develop case plan based on identified needs. Documents and maintains confidential case records. Directs and refers probationers to community resources such as treatment centers or other agencies based on observation of activities, assessments, behavior, and conditions of probation. Prepares a variety of electronic and written reports, to include: pre-sentence/pre-trial reports and violation reports. Cooperates and maintains contact with other social and law enforcement agencies. Conducts in-depth interviews with offenders in order to gather accurate data regarding background and present situation. Gathers data pertinent to each individual on the caseload, to include information about the offender’s home, school, neighborhood, and relevant social agencies. Conducts investigations, prepares/types reports, and makes recommendations to the Court based upon these investigations. Testifies at court hearings.

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the exam process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified.
