This position is Part-time 20 hours per week. The Medical Support Assistant performs a wide variety of administrative management duties under the general supervision of the Wound Care Team Leader. Receives assignments along with instructions as to objectives and priorities. Independently plans out and carries out assignments for the Wound Care Team. Serves as the front line of contact with patients. Explains procedures to Veterans and their family members both in person and on the phone. Assists with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting appointment times, location or dates as well as shift patients to other healthcare providers as conflict with staffing and/or coverage occurs. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performs a variety of administrative duties designed to assist the Wound Care Team in the administrative management of operations.
- Establishes and maintains a variety of automated and manual record systems reflecting technical and administrative data for the Wound Care Project.
- Schedules and coordinates appointments/procedures for patients with wound problems into appropriate clinics.
- Makes appointments in a timely and accurate manner.
- Prepares a variety of materials using work processing and other types of software such as spreadsheets, graphics and briefing packages.
- Receives visitors and telephone calls; resolves non-technical problems of both a general and specific nature.
- Generates a variety of standard reports through the use of the computer database.
- Calls patients from the waiting area back to the exam/procedure room, screens record for previous visits and diagnoses and treatments.
- Measures vital signs and reports deviations from the norm to the provider.
- Orders supplies and equipment using automated systems.

Experience - Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
Education - One year above high school; or
Experience/Education Combination . Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-06 LEVEL:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that is directly related to the duties of a Medical Support Assistant. Experience at this level includes, but is not limited to: The ability to perform a wide variety of administrative management duties under the general supervision of the Wound Care Team Leader. Working as a front line contact with patients and staff, setting the tone for perception concerning quality of healthcare services.
