DESCRIPTION

After School Socialization is an after-school recreation and community-integration program that provides developmentally disabled children and young adults, age 5 to 22 years old, the opportunity to socialize while learning the daily skills needed for future independent community living. The program's focus is on socialization and peer interaction so participants can develop the skills necessary to transition into integrated community recreation programs.

We currently have a need for a Part Time Recreation Specialist to work with children and young adults with development and other disabilities in our after school program.

This is a part time position Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 2:00 - 5:30 pm, Wednesdays 1:00 to 5:30 pm in our Palo Alto location. There ay be an opportunity for extended hours during our summer camp that runs through mid-August.

DUTIES

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ensure compliance with all legal requirement, licensing standards, and agency policies
  • Ensure health & safety of consumers, personnel & visitors at all times
  • Ensure a healthy, safe & clean environment
  • Ensure highest ethical & business practices
  • Work directly in program with participants
  • Perform setup and clean-up of activity areas daily
  • Able to assist participants in physical recreational activities, incl. pushing swings, assisting roller skating
  • Ability to stand/sit for extended periods, kneel, reach & bend related to completion of duties
  • Transport program participants to various community locations using personal or agency vehicle
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • In manager's absence, supervise program staff and provide oversight of all program components
  • Take responsibility for the health, safety and wellbeing of all program participants
  • Complete daily progress notes, measuring progress of participant goals, and assist in developing and updating semi-annual IPP reports
  • Communicate professionally and clearly and update participant stakeholders regarding activities and progress daily - verbally or in writing as assigned by manager
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and one on one meetings with program manager
  • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Able to actively participate in recreational activities, incl. running, dancing, throwing balls, playing in sandbox
QUALIFICATIONS

Must be minimum of 18 years old

12 semester units completed in ECE in Recreation, Physical Education, Human Services, Social Welfare, Nursing, Psychology, Sociology, Home Economics, Child Development or School Age child classes. OR, 6 semester units completed and enrolled in at least 2 semester units each semester until all 12 required units are completed.

Experience: 6 months working with individuals with developmental disabilities

Substitution: None

Certification: Standard 1st Aid with Adult, Child and Infant CPR (may be obtained post-hire)
Other: Communicate clearly & effectively, verbally & in writing; project a professional &
positive image at all times. Proof of valid driver's license, current automobile insurance.

PRE EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Clearance with the Department of Justice by completing a background check consisting of having fingerprints processed by appropriate law enforcement agencies (paid for by Abilities United)

POST EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Physical, 2-step Tb test and physical examination. Maintain all job related certification requirements.
