GE is an equal opportunity employer, offering a great work environment, challenging career opportunities, professional training and competitive compensation.

We're looking for the type of programmer that has a bookshelf containing The Pragmatic Programmer and hangs out on Stack Overflow looking for answers and helping out other developers, all to hone their skills. We are also looking for a social developer, someone that wants to know the customer, understand and participates in the business decisions behind what they are working on and participates in the software development community.

Essential Responsibilities
We understand that software development is a highly skilled craft and we treat developers accordingly. We operate under Scrum using fast-paced short iterations delivering real value every 2 weeks. You won't battle with slow machines since you'll have 16GB of RAM, 3 monitors and screaming SSD drive. Every day we strive to remove roadblocks so you can develop great software. We take software development seriously!

This position is responsible for quickly & efficiently producing high quality code in a variety of languages, architectures and situations under an agile framework, Scrum. This position requires a passion for technology & software development, striving for continual improvement & the embracing of change. Tackling of the entire gamut of software development from bug fixes to creating new products is expected to be performed with elegance and technical mastery. Teams are small & the environment fast-paced. In this role, you will:
  • Integrate into our Scrum team within 1 month - Complete each sprint with all backlog items worked in order by priority, fully tested and releasable after each sprint. It will require the ability to abide by Scrum and not taking short cuts that degrade the state of the code & completing everything as a team. Unfamiliar with Scrum, we can teach you!
  • Develop following our standards, complete code reviews, developer testing and write unit tests within 1 month - We strive to follow best practices, guidelines & code review, test & unit test everything we produce.
  • Be a fully productive in ASP.NET MVC 3 Razor within 3 months - Our new products are built in Microsoft ASP.NET MVC 3 with Razor & you will need to become fully productive in this stack. It's a new framework we are learning & we need developers that can contribute to building a top-tier MVC framework.
  • Develop in distributed architecture systems within 6 months - After tackling web-based development in our MVC stack you will work in our distributed architecture consisting of back-end components.
  • Be a fully contributing developer on all of our platforms within 1 year - Work in all of our platforms with ease ranging from our ASP.NET MVC applications & .NET Windows Mobile devices to helping migrate our PHP application over time to .NET. This will require excellent code analysis, problem solving skills & discipline.
  • Be a subject matter expert in 1 area of our product line within 1 year - This will take forethought and initiative. A Typical Day After getting settled, you will meet with the rest of the team for our 2 standup meetings. First is the cross-department daily huddle at 9:30. We report metrics across all departments. After hearing how the latest sales efforts are proceeding and quick discussion about the upcoming production maintenance, you segue into development team Scrum. The pace is fast and refreshing.

During the scrum you will answer: what you did yesterday, what you plan on doing today and if anything is blocking you. This time you are blocked by an external dependency and the ScrumMaster was able to offer some help to expedite the process. Everything else seems to look good and the burndown chart is trending down nicely.

After, you head back to your workstation and fire up Visual Studio 2010 working in .NET 4 and ASP.NET MVC 3. All of a sudden you receive a popup notification from our Continuous Integration server citing a few failed tests from a recent commit by a co-worker. You rush to help, and soon after some pair coding it was fixed, tested locally, committed and everything is now all green. Phew! Now you pull up VersionOne and start on the next task. You sense a little bit of ambiguity in the task, but that doesn't concern you too much. There's some squishiness built into the specifications and it gives you a chance to think the problem through. Besides, your teammates, Product Owner and stakeholders are always there to help you.

    Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science or Engineering (or a High School Diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of experience in an IT or engineering position)

    Additional Eligibility Qualifications
GE will only employ those who are legally authorized to work in the United States for this opening. Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen.
