The NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2000 employees.

This position will supervise Agricultural Microbiologists in the food microbiology laboratories and be responsible for multiple aspects of daily operations including sample receipt, prep, testing and reporting; ensuring compliance to ISO 17025 requirements and the quality management system; maintaining and troubleshooting equipment; establishing testing priorities; purchasing and maintaining supply inventories; facilitating training and competency of direct reports; providing technical guidance to the laboratory and customers; developing annual work plans; coordinating weekend, holiday and emergency testing work schedules; maintaining and enforcing safety procedures for all work processes. This position may assist with grant projects, method verifications, validations, or matrix extensions. Occasional evening, weekend, holiday or emergency event work is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Thorough knowledge of microbial physiology for food, dairy and meat products. Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of ELISA, ELFA, classic PCR, real time PCR, immuno-magnetic separation, microbiology laboratory equipment and proficient knowledge and expertise in all aspects of aseptic technique. Must be able to work with pathogens, including Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli O157:H7. Must be able to interact effectively with customers by phone, email or in person. Excellent record keeping abilities plus good organizational, leadership, and supervisory skills. Prefer a candidate with post graduate courses or degree in Microbiology, Food Microbiology, or Molecular Biology; experience with real time PCR; experience in a food microbiology laboratory; experience with ISO 17025 or other laboratory accreditation/certification; experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in microbiology, food science or a related curriculum and three years of progressive microbiological analytical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience .
