RS1: Agricultural Science Research Assistant Questionnaire, v. 4-13
ABOUT THIS POSITION:
There will be multiple positions filled from this announcement. The positions are open until suitable candidates have been identified. Successful candidates will be working on various projects in different scientific disciplines. Candidates who may have experience in one or more of the listed disciplines are highly encouraged to apply.
We will be hiring multiple positions, and candidates may want to consider applying for both Research Support 1 and Research Support 2.
This position is available on a continuing basis (contingent upon funding) to assist in the establishment and maintenance of field, laboratory, and/or greenhouse experiments and assist with data collection from experiments. May require the ability to work flexible schedules and/or occasional overtime.
**Due to job requirement, successful candidates must be at least 18 years of age.**
Must possess: valid driver’s license and ability to drive a UI vehicle (pass driving record check and defensive driving course); good written and oral English communication skills.
Willingness and ability to: work with and without direct supervision; drive to field work sites with some overnight travel a possibility; work flexible and/or overtime schedule when the workload dictates; occasionally work with toxic, volatile, corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances following strict safety rules; follow good safety practices
Physical ability to: constantly position oneself to perform functions of this position in the field, laboratory and/or greenhouse; move continuously throughout the shift in the fields, laboratory and/or greenhouse; work effectively with plant and soil materials that may contain pollen, dust or other irritants; lift and carry/move field, laboratory and/or greenhouse items weighing up to 40 lbs; work in outdoor weather conditions.
**Employment may be contingent upon satisfactory results of a criminal background and/or driving record investigation.**
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Willingness to: work on research projects that may be aimed at exploring behavior, ecology and management of agricultural insect pests and their natural enemies.
Experience in: scientific principles and conducting laboratory experiments; keeping accurate records; working on a farm including operating tractors and other farm equipment; and working in a greenhouse.
Demonstrated ability to: work in a cooperative manner and be an integral team member; operate, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and resolve basic problems with instruments and farm equipment; follow good safety practices.
Knowledge in: one or more of the following disciplines: biology, botany, entomology, plant pathology, weed science, chemistry, or physical sciences; basic personal computer software programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
