The Prospect Park Alliance, working in partnership with City of New York and the community, restores, develops, and operates Prospect Park for the enjoyment of all by caring for the natural environment, preserving historic design, and serving the public through facilities and programs. Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s 585-acre historic flagship park, designed by the famed Olmsted and Vaux. It is the home of Brooklyn’s only lake and forest, with nature trails, numerous recreational activities, public educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and the first urban Audubon Center.

The Prospect Park Alliance is currently seeking an Arborist II to assist in managing over 12,000 landscape trees. The Arborist II will act as leader of the arboriculture field operations and reports directly to the Natural Resources Supervisor, assisting in supervising in-house arboriculture personnel as well as contract crews, interns, and volunteers engaged in tree work.

Responsibilities for the Arborist II include but are not limited to carrying out tree care practices such as the planting, watering, fertilizing, chipping, climbing and pruning of trees, bucket truck operation, chainsaw and other power tool operation, and maintenance of equipment related to all the above tasks. This position will also be responsible for training field workers in above tasks and keeping the work site safe. Other responsibilities include conducting hazard tree evaluations and IPM monitoring for tree pests and diseases, GIS mapping, working with donors as part of the Park’s active donor tree program and assisting in educating the public and Park workers about the care of trees. This position affords the opportunity to gain experience and exposure to a wide variety of tree-care related tasks, and to work in the midst of an historic Park with large, beautiful, and rare trees.

Qualifications for the Arborist II include:
  • Either a degree in forestry or a related field and at least two years arboriculture experience or at least four years arboriculture experience
  • Supervisor experience
  • ISA certification (or within 6 months of hire)
  • NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License (or within 6 months of hire)
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team
The ideal candidate for the Arborist I has proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS experience, and experience working with the public.
