The Art Director is responsible for creating and managing outstanding design concepts for all client deliverables. In this role the Art Director will ensure that the design consistently achieves the client’s marketing objectives, as well as identify opportunities for business growth. The Art Director will be responsible for managing multiple projects at various stages of development, while working alongside the editorial and production teams to maintain quality meet deadlines and remain within budget. We're looking for candidates with food publication experience; in this role, you'll be in charge of layout, design and direction of all photo shoots for a food publication.
Specific responsibilities include:
Effectively translate branding and marketing strategies for a wide range of clients into exceptional creative concepts; identify areas of opportunity for business growth in line with the client’s objectives.
Act as liaison to clients regarding design questions and consultation needs; participate in on-site and off-site client presentations.
Work closely with editorial staff in order to select suitable art work and photos for each project.
Coordinate with the Managing Editor on schedules and production in order to meet deadlines in a cost and time efficient way.
Create original art and/or illustrations for magazine, including graphics, charts and custom illustrations using stock art and royalty-free images.
Recruit, supervise and art direct freelance illustrators and photographers; ensure full understanding of client deliverables as well as timely and accurate completion of projects within established art budgets.
Provide pre-press supervision of digital photography to ensure color, proper retouching and typographic placement throughout the proofing stages.
Create, maintain and enforce design styles, guides and rules of client publications and internal and external client brands.
Conceptualize and provide art direction for photo shoots, type design and layouts.
Participate in weekly team meetings and client conference calls.
Maintain regular backups and archives of all art files for each publication.
Ability to manage multiple projects at various stages of development in an organized manner; maintain smooth workflow and manage tight, often changing deadlines and priorities
Work closely with editors, clients and production team to ensure on-time releases of files
High level of personal and professional organization; able to work with minimal supervision
Strong concept development and brainstorming skills; able to apply innovative thinking and creative ideas to generate design solutions across multiple platforms
Proven success in developing effective design elements and campaigns in a wide array of formats including (though not limited to) magazines, websites, newspapers, packaging, book design, brochures, annual reports, corporate identities, etc
Successfully execute solutions to complicated design challenges; excellent creative and intuitive problem solving abilities, including ability to identify and solve client/team issues
Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with team members and clients as well as generate enthusiasm about projects and designs
Ability to easily transition between tactical and strategic thinking, tasks and responsibilities
Outstanding detail-orientation with a relentless focus on quality and continuous improvement
Strong digital skills with the ability to optimize designs for use in print and various forms of electronic media
Minimum qualifications include:
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, graphic arts, visual communications or fine arts; 5-7 years of print experience
In-depth knowledge of Mac OS and design software, primarily Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Quark Xpress
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
Strong sense of typography, illustration, layouts and photography
In depth knowledge of color, pre-press operations and art photo direction
