Aspiring Transformational Principal Interns are exceptional, motivated leaders with an urgent desire to transform underperforming urban schools and dramatically increase student achievement. Principal Interns are participants in MPS’ rigorous, full-time Aspiring Transformational Principal Academy. Over 13 months, they develop and apply the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful transformational principals in MPS, while working towards a MN K-12 principal license.
Upon successful completion of a five-week summer intensive, Aspiring Transformational Principal Interns engage in a full academic-year residency at an MPS school. They assume leadership responsibilities, while being mentored by school principals and coached by program facilitators. They also engage in weekly professional development seminars and complete rigorous, standards-aligned assignments. The summer following their residency, Principal Interns continue their training and develop a strategic plan for a school.
Commitment and Performance Expectations
Principal Interns must complete each phase of the Aspiring Transformational Principal Academy to successfully advance through the program. Successful graduates of the Academy will be eligible for principal licensure through a partnership with MNSU-Mankato. They will apply for open principal positions in the district and will be required to fulfill a 3-year service commitment to work in MPS.
