HeinzSeed, a worldwide leader in hybrid processing tomato research and development, is looking for an assistant agronomist to help with the day to day field operations of planting, harvesting, and data collection of HeinzSeed's new product development trials, sales trials, and tomato fruit quality trials in California. This person would also assist with local seed operations tasks during the off season.
The main responsibilities of this position will be:
' Plants, records data, and harvests adaptability trials for field yield and quality information.
' Weekly walks the field trials and records horticultural characteristics and growth habits of all the new trial varieties.
' Assists with the planting and care of the California sales trials, and grow outs.
' Assists with the planting and harvest of the tomato fruit quality trials.
' Prepares and issues a trial map book for all the various field trials/locations.
' Oversees the inventory of the experimental trial seed, and makes sure it is sanitized, milled, and packaged for domestic and international use.
' Performs seed quality tests on all experimental trial seed, and assists with quality tests for commercial seed lots. These tasks would include: incoming seed sampling, germination tests, seed counts, etc.
' Performs statistical analysis on adaptive trial results, and reports the results at the end of the season.
' Fills trial seed sample requests for HeinzSeed's regional sales managers and their customers.
' Assists with the care for the seed operation equipment and the fleet vehicles.
' Tomato sampling for fruit characteristic studies
This position is an excellent opportunity, for the individual, to be part of California's processing tomato industry and be a part of a team of industry leaders. This position will be based out of our Stockton facility, and will include travel all over California's central valley. A vehicle, cell phone, and expense account will be provided for all business related travel. Overtime and weekend work will be required, when needed.
Competencies include oral and written communication skills, data recording, basic computer skills, problem solving, innovation, attention to detail, and being a self starter
-A BS degree in Agriculture, Ag Business, Crop Science, or Horticulture, with some hands-on field experience preferred.
- This person must have the ability to work long hours, or weekends when needed.
- This job does require the person to work in hot weather conditions.
- The ability to speak Spanish is preferred
- Valid California Driver's License
- Ability to Lift 50 Pounds
