Job Description:

This specific assignment may change with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Agronomy Department (http://agronomy.ifas.ufl.edu). The selected individual will be responsible for developing a cutting edge research program in the genetic improvement of one or more of the world’s major food crops (potential crops include, but are not limited to, maize, wheat, sorghum, millet, potato, rice, cowpea, pigeon pea and cassava). The incumbent will be expected to develop a program that is integrated with the CGIAR centers’ programs focused on world food crops. He/she will coordinate both research and graduate student training efforts with the CGIAR centers, international agricultural research centers ( IARCS ) outside the CGIAR network, other international NGOs, and with UF and IFAS international programs. Specific attention will be focused on current programs of significance to agricultural development efforts in Africa, Latin America, and/or Asia. Applied and basic research on aspects of food crop production improvement that contribute to the economic viability of agricultural systems both worldwide and in Florida is expected. Collaboration with interdisciplinary scientists working in the areas of biotechnology, translational genomics, pest management, soil science and fertility management, stress physiology and other pertinent disciplines for germplasm enhancement and cultivar development is expected. A significant component of the research program should be on the development and application of molecular markers to enhance selection efficiency for traits of critical importance in food crop production. The faculty member will actively seek contract and grant funding to support his/her program. Incumbent will also be expected to publish results in refereed journals, trade journals, and other appropriate media. The faculty member will teach an undergraduate course in genetics and participate in graduate education by teaching a course in plant breeding and by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the results of such research with his/her graduate students. The selected faculty member will be expected to integrate into the UF/ IFAS Plant Breeders Workgroup and the UF/ IFAS Genetics Institute. It is expected that the incumbent will develop and release cultivars of commodities for which research is being conducted.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
